    This video is supposed to be available by purchase only on Vimeo. The money goes to a fund for Maggie. Please consider that. It's a form of income for Maggie's care.

      Not everyone can afford the disc set. David Geary who made the video has given his approval for it to be uploaded.

      The DVD set was expensive for some people. It hasn't been available for quite a while. The Vimeo offering is everything that was on the disks, which is a couple of hours of content for $50. That seems reasonable considering what you get, and it helps Maggie.

      I thank Laura for this. I studied with Maggie in the early '80s. After seeing this video, which is from a Vimeo project I otherwise wouldn't have known about, I immediately went to Vimeo and bought the set. I'm sure I'm not the only one who will do this...just sayin'

    I assume that this video was made to clarify the individual movements. It may be that the shape appears rigid and not flowing to the viewer. However, if you look closely, you can see the internal energy work. She is trying to adapt the flow of energy to her extremely slow movements. This requires top mental performance. Only those who have run the form under this premise know how much mental strength this demands.
    I take my hat off to her!!!

    • @whiteeagle7914
      @whiteeagle7914 3 місяці тому

      She is doing it correctly. Released and relaxed are not the same. The movements are always done at that speed. The nei chi is what is causing the body to move at all. you can see it pumping through her to create the movements and other physical changes. Its not done by imagining. The energy is generated in the body, by the body and causes physical changes throughout. Look into Damo Mitchell my friend. its clearly explained by him

    • @franz55l51
      @franz55l51 3 місяці тому

      @@whiteeagle7914Thank you for your interpretation of the energy flow.
      It's a nice gesture of yours to refer to Damo Mitchell. I'm sure he will thank you for it. He is completely unknown to me.
      However, I think that at this point you should rather mention the venerable Sifu Cheng Man Ching, his master student and the venerable Sifu William C. C. Chen and their statements on dealing with the energy flow.

    This made me feel so nostalgic. I originally studied with students of Chi Chiang Tao and practiced something similair to this. I later trained under Huang Shen Shyan's lineage which helped me personally understand the movements more clearly but I miss the aesthetics of this form. (Please don't read that as condescension! I think I was too dense to experience the subtlety and needed a more paint-by-numbers approach.) Of course Dr Chi and Master Huang studied with Cheng Man Ching.

      With respect to, I can’t agree. The hip, knee, foot alignment is not maintained. The upper body is disconnected from the lower body in certain postures (Brush Left Knee, etc). No evidence of any connective wave of chi from the ground up. The eyes are focused on different parts of the body, she is observing herself rather than experiencing the flow. I submit that she moves at this pace because that is how she has practiced over the years. I’d be interested to see her perform a fast form and to see how she is with partner drills.

    The left side screen is mirror image, so all the moves are shown as being done from the wrong side. In other words, left and right are switched. Beginners will only be confused by this.

    I have tried to post info on purchasing the Maggie Newman package, but the comments are not showing up. I assume UA-cam isn't allowing them. The posting of this video should be seen as an OPPORTUNITY to help publicize that project, which features more than two hours of excellent interview and demonstration, on social media. If Laura hadn't posted this, I would not have known of its existence. So go buy it, and tell your tai chi friends about it!

    It's ridiculously slow, albeit with excellent posture etc considering her age. Chen man Ching stated that the form should take between 3 and 5 minutes, I can appreciate a slow form but it's just one tiny facet of an amazing martial art which is rarely taught properly in the West.

    • @lauraxism
      @lauraxism  6 місяців тому +2

      @ambienthuman 6 місяців тому +1

      I genuinely think this may be a later video than some may initial think. I guess it may even be from the early to mid 2000s? That's pure speculation on my part of course. Maggie is probably mid 70' during the recording?

      @@davidryan7386 I don't disagree with that. However, the general attitude leans towards the idea that the slower the form, the better it is. Cheng Man Ching himself stated it should be between 3 and 5 minutes. I'd much rather see a very well controlled form which lasts this duration.

    It keeps evading me why people would want to copy Cheng Man Ching's personal style, which in fact is the prime example of being formless. It simply makes no sense.
    I respect him as one of the greatest, and he was the absolute master of the formless form. People mimicking him just end up being sloppy.
    That said, the lady is good, but you don't become formless by copying someone else's formless style, that would just make it another form.
    And by the way, when it looks like he's dead drunk when performing, that's probably because he was.
