    The drama in the song as well as in the poem by Goethe is that the father kills his child out of fear, although he actually only wanted to protect him!
    He kills his child with his love, a very tragic subject.

    I'm so happy that you finally reviewed this song!😁 I've been waiting so long for someone to do that, and it was you both that did it! ❤
    This is an extraordinary song, one of my favourite trio - other ones being Wiesses Fleisch and Wiener Blut. All these three songs are very dark and have something special about how they sound, you should definitely see those missing two (Live Wacken 2013 is a MUST SEE) 😅
    Whole lyrics is based on Goethe's poem "Erlkönig" (King of the Elves") which resolves quite similar... but Till of course made the darker turn than Goethe did! 😂
    educatedmarine did a great job, original text is really hard to translate into English!
    In my opinion, this song not only deals with the fear of flight. In the first place it shows, that if we try to protect someone, we can sometimes hurt them.
    Have a nice evening! ❤

  • @TomTomson81

    The song is not difficult to understand. Father and child board a plane. The child gets scared because he gets dark premonitions of his death. It is called by death and thinks it dies because the plane crashes.
    The plane gets into severe turbulence and everyone panics. The father wants to protect his child and holds it in his arms. But the panic makes him hold too hard and he squeezes the life out of the child. The tragic thing is that the child did not die in a plane crash, but by the father, who now has to live with it after they have landed safely.
    The brothers mentioned in the song are angels or spirits or death itself. He calls the child to him. This is the child's premonition.

      "Puppe" yes, but not live. The first listening should be studio version, because there is no good quality live performance where you can hear the song and Till's voice properly. I agree that live version is amazing, but I'd really like them to listen to the studio version first and then they can also react to the live one.

    How Till gets some of his ideas/lyrics:
    "Some of the Tills lyrics are inspired by classical German literature. Poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe." Goethe's famous ballad Erlkönig, for ex. translated:
    Who rides so late through the night and the wind?
    It is the father with his child.
    He holds the boy safely in his arms;
    he holds him tight, he keeps him warm.
    The mood and rhythm of Goethe's poem are echoed in Rammstein's "Dalai Lama":
    An airplane lies in the evening wind
    On board is a man with a child
    They sit safely, sit warm
    And are lulled into falling asleep

  • @grafsepp7955

    This song is based on a poem by J.W.Goethe. In 1782, of course, there were still no airplanes. Here is the old original:
    Erlkönig - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (english translation):
    ho's riding so late where winds blow wild
    It is the father grasping his child;
    He holds the boy embraced in his arm,
    He clasps him snugly, he keeps him warm.
    "My son, why cover your face in such fear?"
    "You see the elf-king, father?
    He's near! The king of the elves with crown and train!"
    "My son, the mist is on the plain."
    'Sweet lad, o come and join me, do!
    Such pretty games I will play with you;
    On the shore gay flowers their color unfold,
    My mother has many garments of gold.'
    "My father, my father, and can you not hear
    The promise the elf-king breathes in my ear?"
    "Be calm, stay calm, my child, lie low:
    In withered leaves the night-winds blow."
    'Will you, sweet lad, come along with me?
    My daughters shall care for you tenderly;
    In the night my daughters their revelry keep,
    They'll rock you and dance you and sing you to sleep.'
    "My father, my father, o can you not trace
    The elf-king's daughters in that gloomy place?"
    "My son, my son, I see it clear
    How grey the ancient willows appear."
    'I love you, your comeliness charms me, my boy!
    And if you're not willing, my force I'll employ.'
    "Now father, now father, he's seizing my arm.
    Elf-king has done me a cruel harm."
    The father shudders, his ride is wild,
    In his arms he's holding the groaning child,
    Reaches the court with toil and dread. -
    The child he held in his arms was dead.

    Dobry wieczór, Bună seara!
    Rammstein did a great job by transferring a classic poem into modern times!
    And yes, to completely understand and appreciate a song or movie or poem, you have to learn the language, because it is impossible to transfer all aspects from one language into another. That's why I like to watch movies like "Airplane!" or Mel Brooks movies in english, you can't transfer all the gags in another language. Same with Rammstein, they often playing with words, using double meanings, creating new words or using old-fashioned words to create a special effect, all that is lost in the translation.
    In the song, the airplane is flying through a thunderstorm which frightens the father so much, that he accidentally kills his child when he was trying to protect it. In my opinion, the message is: if we have too much fear, we will destroy what we want to protect. And this can also be seen very political....
    By the way, the album "Reise, Reise", which this song is from, has a flight recorder as cover art 😉

    "Rammstein - Hallomann" In my opinion a song that gets far too little attention! As is well known, Rammstein often take up "uncomfortable" topics that others prefer to keep their hands off. But "Hallomann" is just devastating and tops it all off! Very, very heavy fare, but simply terrific!

    In Goethe's poem, a ghostly apparition, the King of the Elves, whispers seductively to the child and seeks to abduct him into his realm. At the end of the ballad, the son dies in the arms of his father on horseback.
    In the song"Dalai Lama" the"King of the Winds" aims to claim the boy,who finally dies in his father's arms, held too tightly in anticipation of an airplane crash.

    5:30 I am not sure what the "real" meaning is with this song (this is kind of common with Rammstein's songs imo, they can be interpreted in many ways). But whenever I daydream to this song I always tend to interpret it as a metaphor to life. Your parents brought you into the world (on the plane) and now you're stuck here until you die and there is nothing you can do about it just go straight for your death ("Weiter, weiter ins Verderben/further, further into doom").

    If we leave aside the classical origin and look only at the present, the child could still be alive if the father had not had a fear of flight. Or, the more you love someone and want to bind them to you, the more you suffocate them.

    I can't wait for you to react on Puppe studio version which is a staple of rammstein, then the live version which has a staging that only rammstein knows how to do ^^ puppe is one of the most hypnotizing songs of the group, the voice of Till is particular, on this song, with a raw emotion, an acting I would even say, and the subject so dark. one of the band's most fascinating songs for me.
