Back in the day (when I was growing up) you had all this wonderful talent from the 40's and 50's in their middle age on TV. You saw brilliance like this all the time. The great Sarah Vaughn, Maynard Ferguson and Lou Rawls on the same stage - on the Mike Douglas show? Fantastic. Alas - talent like this - of this quality is no more.
Lost in all that talent is the fact that Mike Douglas had started out as a big band singer with Kay Kyser, so in joining in this number he was returning to his roots, as it were. Mike sounded good on this one, too. It's a shame that Mike, Lou, Sarah, and Maynard have all gone on to their eternal rewards. Rest in peace, and keep swinging.
Wow. Sarah Vaughan must have motivated Mike Douglas to step out of his normal bag because I've never heard him sing this enthusiastically before. Great to hear Lou Rawls. This must have been fun for Maynard Ferguson! What an audience pleaser this was! Thanks for uploading 4andmore's channel:)
Goota agree whole heartedly. Everyone on that stage was performing, and performing exceptionally well. But Lou Rawls was *being*. Ah, he was just so smooth!
MF Band personnel: trumpets (L to R): Joe Mosello, Stan Mark, Dennis Noday, Ron Tooley trombones (L to R): Phil Gray, Nick Lane saxes/woodwinds (L to R): Eric Troub, Mike Migliori, Bobby Militello piano/keys: Biff Hannon, guitar: John Chiodini, bass: Gordon Johnson, drums: Peter Erskine
Lou is the man!
