A lot of people are snobby about small pianos and spinet. With the right voicing and tuning they can sound great. Not everybody can or wants to buy a Steinway/Bösendorfer concert grand. They serve a purpose.
This piano sounds great. We have tried to figure out when my Spinet was buitl, and we know it was built between 1938 and 1945 with Baldwin/Yamaha figuring out that the piano should not exist, as the board design is german, the body is Wurlitzer, and the number was never used as Wurlitzer was not producing pianos at that time in the war. They have officially classified it as a "ghost piano" and think it was a Paperclip piano that had it's body exchanged when coming to the US from Allied Occupied Germany. Pretty much either the piano is not worth much, or it's invaluable. They think it was an illegally built model, but as a fine note, it was used in a recording studio from 1954 until 1998 when it went out of business and the piano was sold to a store. The thing is all original, minus a few replacement pieces because of the age, and both tuners we have had, could not believe what they were looking at. Our original tuner thought it was a paperclip piano, and or new one thinks so as well. --------------------------------- Sein Klavier klingt großartig. Das Wurtlitzer-Spinett wurde normalerweise nicht so gut wie andere Marken geschätzt, zum Beispiel: Yamaha, Kawai oder sogar einige europäische Klaviere. Ich habe ein Wurtlitzer-Spinett von 1954, und da ich ein professioneller Pianist bin, obwohl ich kürzere Saiten und einen kürzeren Resonanzboden hatte, änderte sich sein Klang für eine Yamaha oder sogar für einige Europäer nicht. Diese Klaviere sind solide gebaut.
Does your piano have the same issues regarding tune stability? I own one from approximately 1948-1950 and its on its original strings after 70 years and it still sounds great, a bit tinny in areas but overall great. However it fails to remotely stay in tune, something our tuner said is common in Spinets. However he says our piano freakishly sounds like a Steinway and even the action is closer to an older Steinway from the early 1900's making him think it might have been a Steinway Wurlitzer collaboration or prototype.
Hallo Sam, My piano is manufactured in the early 80s. I donˋt have more issues with the tuning than usual with an acoustic piano. I use it regularly on many recordings in my studio. The Steinway-Story is interesting though. Best regards, Markus
