The Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, usually referred to as simply Wurlitzer, was an American company started in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1853 by German immigrant Rudolph Wurlitzer. The company originally imported stringed, woodwind and brass instruments from Germany for resale in the U.S. Wurlitzer enjoyed initial success largely due to defense contracts to provide musical instruments to the U.S. military.[1] In 1880 the company began manufacturing pianos. Eventually the company relocated to North Tonawanda, NY and quickly expanded to make band organs, orchestrions, nickelodeons and pipe or theatre organs popular in theatres during the days of silent movies.
Over time, Wurlitzer acquired a number of other companies which made a variety of loosely related products including kitchen appliances, carnival rides, player piano rolls, and radios. Wurlitzer also operated a chain of retail stores where the company's products were sold.
As technology evolved, Wurlitzer began producing electric pianos, electronic organs, and jukeboxes and eventually became known more for jukeboxes and vending machines, which are still made by Wurlitzer, than for actual musical instruments.
Wurlitzer's jukebox operations were sold and moved to Germany in 1973. The Wurlitzer piano and organ brands and U.S. manufacturing facilities were acquired by the Baldwin Piano & Organ Co. (commonly called the Baldwin Piano Company) in 1988 and most piano manufacturing was moved overseas. The Baldwin Co., including its Wurlitzer assets, was subsequently acquired by the Gibson Guitar Corporation in about 1996. Ten years later, Gibson acquired Deutsche Wurlitzer and the Wurlitzer Jukebox and Vending Electronics trademarks, briefly bringing Wurlitzer's best-known products back together under a single corporate banner in 2006. Baldwin ceased making Wurlitzer brand pianos in 2009. Vending machines are still manufactured in Germany using the Wurlitzer name under Gibson ownership. The company ceased manufacturing jukeboxes in 2013, but still sells replacement parts.
The Rembert Wurlitzer Co., Wurlitzer's rare and historic stringed instrument department was independently directed by Rudolph Wurlitzer's grandson, Rembert Wurlitzer (1904-63), from 1948 until his death in 1963. Literally just learned how to tune a piano from watching this. Just finished tuning my piano for the first time ever and it sure needed it. Of course, since I have been a musician all my life and have played guitar, autoharp, piano, harpsichord and violin (as far as the strings go) and studied vocal performance in college, it was bound to be easy for me to tune equal temperament. Already studying the John Young and Werckmeister 1 temperaments.
I'll be tuning the piano my community chorus uses for rehearsal soon. I am also planning to offer to tune the pianos at the community college where I studied for 3 years to get practice and references and then I'll be making money doing it as a side gig. In another life, I worked on commercial aircraft so I will eventually branch out into piano repair. I don't have a ton of connections but the people I do know have a ton of connections.

This tech is really good , he is using a good mic that’s really sensitive to the beats. Helps the listener to actually hear what he is hearing .
And I thought restringing and tuning 12 string guitars was a pain in the ass!

I just got the same Wurlitzer spinet about two weeks ago. Ordered a tuning kit, and when it arrived, I dove right in following the procedure in the video. It took me about 4 times as long, but it’s perfect and holding tune great. Couldn’t have done it without the video. Much Thanks!!!

This is exactly what I've been looking for.
Best no bs tuning video I have seen to date. Bought a kawai upright that was 35 cents flat, following these instructions for slight over pulling I was able to get my new old piano singing in no time. This coming from someone who had previously attempted to tune and always ended up getting a pro to do it.

Great video! Really wish I had watched this one before tuning my Wurtlitzer. I made it through the pitch raise and tuning, but not nearly as quickly as you did! This should significantly speed up the process in the future :-)

Thanks Pete. I grew up around two grandmother's with piano skills, who taught me to play as a child. After decades of no lessons after my initial love of this instrument, I found a used spinet, but after getting it placed realized it was badly out of tune. Felt that it was doable since I have decent ear for music. You've given me enough confidence to take a stab at this after watching closely the method you used. Great video sir. I own this exact model piano, which my parents bought for me around 1980. I know the Wurlitzer spinet is low on the ranks of pianos, but I still wonder how my parents afforded it because were working poor. Glad they did - it was plenty good enough to teach me a love of the instruments, and it has given me 40 years of pleasure. Now I'll tune it up for my 12 year old and hope he finds the same joy.

Thanks for the great video - I found it because I recently acquired a nearly identical Wurlitzer spinet, and part of my interest is learning how to tune it myself. (Don't worry, I've been a musician for many years and an engineer almost as long!)

Thank you, ive been taking a course on piano tuning, and the course work is mostly on grands and studio uprights, but my personal pianos i can work on are spinets, and i couldnt figure out how to mute the strings correctly.

Well, I’m going to try this. I have an old Hardman Peck spinet (wow! It’s a spinet!!) that my grandfather bought me 65 years ago. I stopped playing as a teenager, and the piano hasn’t been tuned in 50 years. Actually, it’s doubling as a shelf for all those years. While I can no longer play, I’d like to get the old girl back into tune. This will be my project for this winter. Thanks very much for an informative and VERY entertaining video.

That wurlitzer is in awesome condition for it's age. Saw that it was made in the Dekalb location, then had to think about how nice is still looks.

WOW night and day! Good video. I work on guitars, amps, violins, bass, contrabass, amplifiers, and I am probably the only person in the valley who does pedal steel guitars, including full rebuilds, restorations, and copedent changes, and improvements to the changers. I am considering adding more piano work to my rep-woa-tar. I have several thousand dollars in electronics, and luthrie tools, why not drop another $6000. I already have a Peterson ST490 with 100s or programmable tempered tunings.
Watching the professional is soothing, for the rest of us meer mortals that would be a couple days of tuning. And that was just a first tuning. He could have done it once more and to get it even more accurate. Not to mention he was holding back the complications of ear tuning thirds and fourths. Just a masterful show of experience and skill.
Doing God's work, sir! This tutorial really gives me the knowledge and confidence to tune my piano by myself for the first time. Thank you so much!

Nice history on Wurlitzer and Rembert Wurlitzer Cos. Someone told me he used to work at that store in NY and tuned 8 of those things a day.

Thank you for the video. No way I would have attempted tuning my piano (1970's Baldwin Spinet). It is taking me MUCH longer to tune than the video but worth it!! I usually have it professionally tuned, but due to the pandemic, I thought I would give it a try!

Yes thank you, I am.just starting out tuning in rural areas that don't have as much access to tuners, since I live in a rural area, and this had some ideas in it that one would think would be obvious, but are very overlooked, but need not be because it makes a LOT of sense. So THANK YOU SO MUCH
Good luck with the business! I also live in a rural area and the man that's been tuning my piano for 60 years had to retire, the state wouldn't renew his license which I don't disagree with. He lives across the state but comes to my area every other month. I worked for him for many years when he'd come and I've been waiting for him to retire to possibly get into the business. How much are you charging? Going rate in my area is $100-120 which is quite a bit lower than the national average.
@theamaturepro I am in eastern nebraska and around here the Average rate is $145 for a tuning when travel fees and pitch raise aren't needed, with travel fees its running $165 Average no pitch raise, if travel fees are needed its $165 fie a basic tuning and about $180ish for pitch raise, thsts the Average of everyone in omaha and Lincoln, from my own research of calling them. I am starting at $140 and then will.adjust accordingly
@theamaturepro in my area there is no one thst does it for pry about 40 miles or so and as you go west there's even fewer

My parents bought me a used Spinet when I started lessons. They action was so much easier than my teachers grand piano, the tuner added lead weights attached to inside on the the keys where you can turn the weights to make the action heavier or very heavy. I wish I had that first piano, they sold it.

At first I couldn't hear what he was talking about about the Wawawa thing but by the end of the video I think I understood. So if you're on the fence about watching the whole thing I think the practice of listening to him tune every note really helps your ear.

Awesome video thank you for the video loved the little jokes “that was my first mistake since 1987” 😂😂 recently acquired Wurlitzer that was bought buy my wife’s grandparents in 1962 and is about to be moved to the house. Bothe of us are looking forward to learning how to play on it like they did. Will have to get it tuned once it is moved and was wondering how it’s done. I’ve tuned many a guitar in my day and brass instruments but don’t know if I should tackle this one.
Thank you. I have Bell console (spinet?) piano that has not been tuned in maybe 20 years. I am looking to buy a tuning kit. The issue, is I don't know what pin socket type and size I need. It has square pins. I figure when I'm snowed in for a couple of days I'll tune it. I just want to have the tools on hand.

When you talk, you remind me of Red Skelton. I wonder if you come from the same general area of the USA? My wife has a Wurlitzer spinet her parents bought her in 1963. I just bought some tuning tools and will try it out for the first time. She's hesitant to spend the money regularly for tuning. She enjoys playing, and she plays every Sunday at church. I've watched your video and think I can do it. Wish me luck!

nice video, I watched the how to tune a grand piano video... I am tuning an old cheap/free piano we got (Whitney upright.) I am also using tunelab and I am thinking it will help with the proper tuning with the temperament... I am a total novice at it but I aint skeerd! I dont have anything to loose. I am wondering however, how many cents would a piano be off before you would need to pull pitch on it? I am thinking I will need to do this as well but even if I just tune it then go back a few weeks/months later and do it, it will be fine because it rarely gets played.

Simply outstanding! This is the first time I've seen a piano tuned up. That meter it great! I've got a problem with my piano. I had a mama mouse invade my Piano. She had the gall to use two or three hammer cushions material for her baby mice. She had her litter on my keyboard. I hadn't played the Piano for a while and it was shocking when I lifted up the lid and found a ball of material laying on the keys and the keys were stained with birthing stains. How hard is it to change the cushion part of the hammer? I know it seems like a stupid question but it is a legitimate question none the less. Thank you.
I think you have to remove it and apply new felt.
