- Things to note in this masterpiece: The deeply spiritual approach to the alApna with some phrases in suggesting vEda mantrams, the catchy pallavi, the way he careeses the notes of each rAga in the rAgamAlika portion, be it hamsanAdam, varALi, neelambari, maand or kAnaDa. TNK's violin accompaniment is also exemplary.
I was not planning to listen to this while I was converting from reel-to-reel to digital, as I had other work to do. However, I was pinned to the armchair and couldn't leave until the piece was over. It has been a long time since I listened to this and almost forgot how beautiful it is.
Friends, please do share the links to this channel with others, especially the younger generation who should be more exposed to high quality Carnatic music that is hard to find. The younger generation especially seem more inclined towards speed, technical achievements, and immediate gratification. Real music is one that keeps haunting your mind for a long time.
Best of Carnatic Flute well said! It’s the simple beautiful elegant process that’s been lost in favor of packaged essay like renderings. Mali on the other hand is stream of consciousness and organic. No rush!
This form of free flowing music takes me to a different state altogether. Where time is removed from the equation; only Mali and the ragaas remain, exploring each other in a separate higher dimension, one that is beyond our comprehension and understanding. What a feeling listening to the raagamalika.
U have rightly pointed about the hurry with which alApana is sung/ played these days. Those pauses wherein u savour the essence of the rAga r so very important! When u listen to this gem by Mali, u realise this. Even the Pallavi is played at such a relaxed pace. Priceless!
An outstanding Todi played with so much reverence and passion in the Mandara Stayi. What elegance and caressing coming from the Maestro,Mali Sir. The sound of the flute in the Mandara Stayi especially Panchamam is just divine.
What is the tala of the pallavi?
when others are playing you feel like pausing, with Mali even pauses are Musical,
it adds to the aura and makes it very benign and thoughtful.
Super, super Todi by Mali. The three Todi renderings by him in this channel - this RTP, the excerpt from a ragamalika featuring Todi and Kaddanu variki are perhaps the only available Todi pieces by this late maestro that are available today. For inexplicable reasons he dropped Todi and Khraharapriya completely from his playing list in his later years. Just a small correction - the first raga in the ragamalika is raga Saraswathi and not HamsanAdam as indicated above. If you find any more hitherto unheard renderings by Mali sir, please share. Thanks
I have this recording but the effort you put into cleaning and balancing every piece you upload has to be lauded! Can't wait for the next!
Thanks. Eventually I will run out!
What a beautiful RTP in thOdi!! It's a delight to listen to such a fantastic job cleaning up the recording. After listening to the one in sangeethapriya I was feeling so bad that the recording was not good! Thank u so much
really wonderful rendering!
Excellent very haunting
Thanks a ton for this treasure!!
what a lovely thodi can we download these RTPS uploaded by you for my personal use? will y please metioned accompanists name also in description?
Cant thank you enough for this. I have heard the thodi rtp on sangeethapriya-That seemed very lacklustre.
Sangeethapriya is a great source for many artists and kritis. The quality of the recordings, especially the older artists, is not that great but we should be thankful for this site for the huge collection. My purpose here is only to upload what is not available elsewhere or if I have something with a better recording, or something that is worth cleaning up and enhancing acoustically. The younger generation will be less accepting of older recordings with poor acoustics and it will be a shame if they miss out on some of the great music of the old masters.
Playing Thodi in flute is not easy since lot of half notes are involved excepting the Madhyamam- gamakkas are simply pouring from his blows.
Yes. Even more difficult are the very subtle gamakas associated with thOdi. But even these difficulties are whisked into the background and you don't think about notes or techniques when Mali is in flow. Your attention is completely caught by how each piece fits in beautifully and naturally with each other, with surprising turns now and then, as if reading a grand novel. After it is told, the story haunts your mind for days. Mali seems to be the only musician who was/is capable of this.
not at his best
