A rare glimpse of what Mali must have been like in his prime, before tape-recorders. A wonderfully creative alapna followed by the kriti. Then something unusual after a kriti: a rAgamAlika, but what a sAveri, simhendramadhyamam, nAtakurunji, and thOdi! The last tthree are rAgams he rarely plays in a rAgamAlika. Palghat Mani Iyer's mrdangam following is sensational.

Thank U for releasing Mali Sirs concert frequently. I went back to 1960s, when I attended some of his concerts in person.
Mali 's uniqueness was , about throwing surprises .unique twists and turns , which normally would not imagine .remarkeable control over shruthi and laya , tonal quality , blowing consistency par excellence .no two times the same . i have attended his saturday and following sunday katcheris . they would be entirely different .gifted genius , music inimitable and immortal
I will never forget the first time I heard M on a recording that I bought at the shop in Chennai where they would copy LPs vinyl onto cassettes,
and I would look at the LPs I loved Carnotic music but I did not know all the musicians so well and I would choose them from their appearance and I'd also asked the record store owner who was good sometimes he was reliable sometimes he was not in any event I still have that cassette and I listen to it five times every year

My Father's most preferred and he used to sing the same during his free time and during festivals season generally and admirer of Eminent Flutist Mr.T.R.Mahalingam known as MALI by his short and sweet name

Mohanam being a captivating raagam, Mali's rendition of it took me to ecstasy. Melody and mastery are his highlights. The accompaniments were of par excellence.

This is one of my favorite.
I just want to say, its very difficult to hear the drums, but nonetheless this still sounds absolutely beautiful. I can tell that this must have been magical to hear in person. This music needs to be re-introduced to the world! I live in Pennsylvania, US and I certainly love it. Truly I thank you for posting this...
This is a very old recording and I tried my best to clean it up. The mrdangam (what you refer to as drums) has been played wonderfully but I agree that it sounds a little muted. However, when you have a genius artiste in full flow (such as the flutist), good accompanists fall into the background so as not to interfere with the flow, yet their contributions are still perceptible and contributory. Please do your bit to spread music of this quality.

I am not aware of any concerts or recordings with Palani S but there may have been a few. I have read that Mali held Palani in high esteem. I understand that Palani might have avoided playing for Mali because of his unpredictability.

Each one to his own views. Personally I have always felt that this was one of the best Mali pieces I have heard. Very soulful and calm with outstanding ragamalika svaras. It grows on you with repeated listening.

The behAg/kAmbhOji was from an old 78 rpm record and from an era when Mali was perhaps at his peak and when tapes did not exist unfortunately. I have some more old records but I am not allowed to share it because of copywrite restrictions.
There was very little in any of his performances.
