Olaf, absolutely brilliant series on the SQR23! Unfortunately, I (sorely) lack both the skillset and courage to tackle what you did...
I've been searching for a reputable shop/person to repair my SQR23 Monterey for a few years to no avail. There is almost no one, at least in the CONTUS, who can/will do what you did. It's a pity b/c the meteoric rise in value of many 80's car marques, esp. Porsche, has resulted in a huge demand for vintage radio repair (check Rennlist, PCA, other sites for desperate folks like me). Another data point: fully functional SQR23's sell quickly for over $1k and non-functioning units can be had for a couple hundred.
My unit is original to my 1985 Porsche 944 which is a Concours-quality and fully stock car with 30k original miles. It just won a regional show but I drive it on weekends with my kids as it was meant to do. I'm the second owner, have the window sticker (the SQR23 was a then-pricey $650 option in 1985, btw!) and all documents from new. The car really deserves to have its' original Blaupunkt fully functional. Plus, I have a huge box of 80's cassettes (from my high school days) that I really want to play! U2, Police, The Fixx, Depeche Mode, all the good stuff.
The a.m. on my unit works, as do all the lights, and I have a jack installed so I can play music from my iPhone. However, neither the FM nor the cassette are functional. I know parts availability is a huge challenge, as is finding a person with the skill and interest to take on the project.
I get that this is just one of your hobbies and you've got a few other things to do (e.g., helping to run K2, etc.) but is there any way I could convince you to take a look at my unit?! [cue heavy laughter]. A gorgeous SQR23 and wonderful time-capsule 944 are at stake and you could be the one to rescue them for the sake of history! Alternatively, do you happen to know any else (maybe a retired tech. co. exec. with lots of spare time who also likes to tinker with electronics?) who you'd be comfortable referring me to? I'm in the San Francisco area, could ship anywhere.
Whatever the case, no need to respond. I just had to reach out and tell you it's a terrific video! Your comfort level and competence in tearing down and repairing that unit is a thing of beauty. Cheers!

    Hello Olaf,
Great set of videos on the Monterey tape deck. I tried to follow bypassing the tape deck, but some reason the radio doesn’t want to engage. Any thoughts how I can make the radio work again on the deck? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback. What do you mean by 'bypassing the tape deck'?

      Hello Olaf,
In your video part 3, you provided how to install a line-in modification on the stereo were the tape deck component was not required to be re-intalled. I followed your video and placed the jumper cables in the designated slots. It appeared that the cps button worked as in the video but the radio waveband u button was not engaging to activate the radio. I decided to try your line in modification since my tape deck stopped working and for some reason it is not allowing to engage to the radio mode. I hope there is a simple way to fix this issue.
      Regards,
      James

@@jamesmathers4999 Wow that is strange. What do you see when you power up the unit? Does the 'U' LED light up? What is shown in the LCD display? Also, what happens when you press the 'M' and 'L' buttons?

When the the unit is turned on the lights on the units come on , but the LCD display does not provide the radio frequency just a blank display. The "U" LED does not turn on when it's pressed and same goes for the"M" and "L" buttons. It seems to be operating in the tape deck mode.

@@jamesmathers4999I think the problem is 'deeper', because even when a tape is playing the display still shows the frequency, and the U, M or L light is on. (I just verified on my deck as I got home). The best I can offer is the schematic. (www.dropbox.com/s/n6rnedxxf3575t6/01%20Schematic.png?dl=0) Maybe that will help you trace back from the LCD display board (PL44)
