"To Catch a King" was a 1979 fictionalized novel of this plot by Jack Higgins and was later turned into a movie with the same title and starring Robert Wagner.
You have given us some great videos, but I think this must be one of your best! I knew Edward VIII had to abdicate in order to marry Wallis Simpson and therefore became the Duke of Windsor. I also knew he had some leanings toward and admiration for the Nazi party. But even as an avid history buff I NEVER knew about any of the behind the scenes intelligence operations by both the British and the Germans which surrounded him, nor his hesitancy about going to the Bahamas. There were so many twists and turns that I honestly had to watch twice to take it all in, and I thoroughly enjoyed it both times. Absolutely phenomenal!!!

First time viewer, now a subscriber. I am according to my genealogy work the fifth cousin to Queen Elizabeth. Through Wallis Simpson. I enjoyed watching your video on what some of the intrigues that was going on at that time. I can understand why they became reclusive after a time. Thank you!
To our host: If you've considered a line of merchandise, how about a nice hard-enamel pin of the *House of History* logo with a choice of silver, gold, or brass pinbacks? Much nicer than a t-shirt, if you ask me - and emblematic of this channel's sustained superior quality. Regards, Kev ps. Upon discovering this channel I instantly subscribed and immediately binge-watched everything. -Bravo! -K.
Hi Kevin, that's a fantastic idea, thank you! I have looked into launching a modest merchandise store, but for it to be profitable the channel has to grow a little bit further. It is definitely something I'd love to work on, though. I'm happy to hear you enjoy my content! If you prefer to listen to these stories during driving/doing something else, I've just launched House of History as a podcast. It's free to download and easy to listen to on the go: podcasts.apple.com/podcast/house-of-history-the-podcast/id1549558236
The trouble with a war of ideology is that the leaders too often have their heads in the clouds. Most all the generals knew that an invasion of Great Britain was not feasible. But the higher-ups could see victory around every corner.
does anyone know what car they travelled in from France to Spain? I'm not sure if they still had their 1936 Buick Limited Series 90 Eight. I was also under the impression that as they dithered in Lisbon Churchill told the duke that if they didn't leave for the Bahamas he would be court-martialled
please profile Tim Hennis. is different from what you usually cover, but historic in that Tim Hennis is the first person to be tried for his life three times in two separate courts, civilian and military. The Eastburn Murders and the book Innocent Victims by Scott Whisnant can tell you more. Also there's an excellent documentary on the show Death Row Stories season 1 if you are interested in something that tells the story and features the players involved in the uncovering of his crimes.
True, but a ham fisted attempt at some semblance of a British government if the Nazi's did invade the UK would still get more compliance from the people than a blatant Nazi German government. The fact Willy Windsor was a borderline collaborator, entirely dominated by his wife and dumber than soup would make him the perfect man for the job in the eyes of the Nazis.
I love the content, thank you for giving this to us for free!
My pleasure!
This is a perfect movie plot

Hi Ian, thanks for this. I had never heard of it to be honest. Very interesting!
I've read that book many times and even have it on CD. Jack Higgins was a favorite author!

But . . . What happened to her maid? Was she ever let go?

So, the title should actually be "Operation Willi (PORTUGAL, 1940)". Not the same country, ya know?
His countryman would refer to him as the pisser because he would pee on himself when drunk.
Envy your command of both English and German
I would love to hear what you think about the recent charges of Hitler getting out of Berlin and living in South America until his death.
There are Bavarian style villages in the middle of Argentina where they speak German so it’s feasible
What a stupid idea. I bet Gobbels thought this one up. (haven't watched the video yet)
They gave up the idea as they realised nobody much cared what happened to him .

*Twice, not "two times".
If only they did it. And if only I had purchased the book and film rights.
Roosevelt should've exiled Joe Kennedy to the Bahamas. The two would've been a great pair.
He looks a little like Prince Charles
Should do one on Churchill's secret deal over Gibraltar with Franco.
1st.
Guten Morgen mein Freund.
