INTO THE DEPTHS: Lake Norman's Radioactive MUTANT | Shiver

  • Lake Norman is a man-made waterway built to cool the nuclear reactors at the McGuire Nuclear Station. The 520 miles of coastline surrounds deep, murky, and cavernous waters. Many theorise that a man-eating beast lurks in the depths. Common theories claim "Normie" is an escaped government cross-breeding experiment. Others believe it to be a catfish mutated by radiation exposure. Whatever the monster's origin, the constant stream of reports has never slowed. Locals, tourists and fisherman alike feel paralysed with fear, and they demand answers.

    LOL! I've lived near Lake Norman my entire life. Mostly what people talk about are the giant catfish. The local catfish keep growing as long as they live and they can live to be very old. Also, just last year an alligator was caught in Lake Wylie just a few miles down stream from Lake Norman. Fish and Game there has started warning the public that alligators are starting to come farther and farther north so everyone should be aware of their surroundings when going to a river or lake. Our Winters are pretty mild and right around the dam and power plant there is a microclimate that is warmer than the rest of the lake. I can easily see an alligator coming up here and deciding not to leave.

      You can't always judge a book by its cover. Yes a lot of what is seen is second...third...or even more removed stories which is embellished with each telling. This goes for all cryptids. Most are mis-identified common things...objects, animals, and weather conditions. However, that being said there is still small percentage of sightings of cryptids that are legitimate and unexplained. Always question but keep an open mind. There are still vast areas of this Earth that are unexplored and many things...large and small...to be discovered.

    Is it safe to swim in a lake that has a nuclear power plant on their shores?

    • @josephvanas6352
      @josephvanas6352 2 роки тому

      short answer yes, long answer is also yes but more complicated. The water they pull from the lake should be going to a secondary coolant loop and never comes into contact with actual nuclear fuel. Water in the primary coolant loop may have some contaminants that could leak from that loop to the secondary loop in very small amounts if a seal is leaking, there is also activation of hydrogen to tritium due to being exposed to neutrons which should be minimal to non existant in secondary coolant and tritium is not very dangerous at all it takes a lot of it to even start having it be a concern for human health. Water discharged by the reactor is usually cleaner than the water that goes in. Now there were reactors at the Manhattan era Hanford site in the 1940s-1950s that did pass water directly through the core and discharge it back into the Columbia river and that did result in radioactive isotopes going into the river however they were literally the first large scale nuclear reactors ever built and were built before environmental regulations. Even reactors built in the 60s and 70s are much more advanced and were designed to keep radioactive contaminates from entering the environment.

    Alligator gar? The world record alligator gar caught was 8.5 feet long and weighed 327 pounds. Their normal range is the Mississippi River Basin as far north as Illinois, consequently, the water temperatures in Lake Norman are no problem. The only barrier to that species naturally inhabiting the Catawba is geographic. However, human interference routinely overcomes geography, Florida's problem with Asian pythons being a prime example of such interference.
