  • I've known Ted for about half of my life! He makes candles with a team of helpers in a workshop just outside Alston, Cumbria
    .www.moorlands-candles.co.uk/Si...
He supplies wholesalers mostly, but some of the beeswax candles are available through Toast www.toa.st/uk/range/english%2...
    (thats a long link!)
I had a lovely day driving through the autumn sunshine to his workshop. I have a very few candles to share with you in the shop
    thelasthomelyhouse.bigcartel....
Thank you for watching! Back soon!

Oh thank you for sharing - this brought back such memories for me. My father was the engineer at a small candle company - Colonial Candle Company of Cape Cod (got bought out and sadly no longer exists). He worked there from it's inception. (actually started w/ a woman making hand dipped bayberry candles in her kitchen!) He designed the machines, including the hand dipped ones like you showed us. Most of their machines were manufactured in Germany. They made citronella candles later on and I remember him coming home smelling of that - every time I smell citronella now I think of my Dad(he's been gone over 20 years and I miss him terribly still). This video brought back so many memories of going to the factory to see my Dad. So nice to see folks still making candles that way.

OH!!! I'm so glad to have triggered those memories for you - what an interesting story - I have known Ted for about 28 years. he's well into his 70's now, but when he used to do all the deliveries to Newcastle he would call by when he was passing, and it seemed I was always just taking a cake out of the oven so I got quite a reputation, not deserved! I really like Ted's candles, I use them in that sparkly chandelier that hangs above my table. Great memories! xxx

This is glorious, I have been researching "candle making secrets book" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Peyaniel Psychological Predominance - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is an awesome one off guide for discovering the trick to be a candle maker for profit minus the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my partner got amazing success with it.

Hi Kate. What a mesmerizing place. I like how people can make the most beautiful things. As a kid I saw someone cut candles in all kinds of shapes. I can still watch in awe how people just create little pieces of art. Loved the huge candles on the dipping machine. I like those very much. Thanks for sharing this beautiful craft. xxx😊💕

What a great place! And I didn't even see any pink.......... The workshop is very cool with the machinery and those big tubs of molten wax. It would be really interesting to see what happens when they change out colors. I just had to order some of the candles. The big ones would be wonderful but I think the postage would be prohibitive. The little ones will be my present to me. Thanks for tour.

Thanks for your time to reply to me. I also would like to see and know more about keeping the chickens and other animals. Got 4 chickens my self, there native to holland where im from, they are called noord hollands blauw. And I hope 1 day my appel tree is as big and gives as much fruit as your tree does, I have seen the tree in one of your other videos. I have this tree for 1 year now and I got it from another owner who left it as it is. So got to trim and cut it so it will have better fruit next year or the year after, this year it had only a few small ones and alot of them fell off to quick.
Well overall ill be happy to see your next video and nice to chat with you.

They do have those Yankee candles but they come in glass jars. Normal dinner candles are very expensive here. I am originally from the Netherlands and moved here in 2012 and miss the huge choice of candles over there.

    Hello Kate,
    what an interesting video.
I wish I could be in the workshop for a few days and join in.
I've found that have the same taste: My favorite candles are beeswax candles.
Scon always, even when we were very little kids, our Christmas tree was adorned with real beeswax candles. The scent is just wonderful. Even today, after so many years, we still do it that way.
And never did the Christmas tree burn down because we just knew how to behave in the presence of burning candles.
Nowadays we are only allowed to use LED lights in the kindergarten, which I think is a great pity, because there is a lot of atmosphere lost. (But unfortunately, the rules are getting more and more and nowadays children should be allowed to experience themselves - of course accompanied by an adult).
Thank you for this wonderful video. (Handmade things are just the best !!)
I hope you and the entire menagerie are fine.
    Big hug
    Claudia

Wow, first time I have gotten dizzy from a video. That was really cool reminded me of a candle factory that I used to go to many years ago. I haven't made beeswax candles in a very long time. The candles I currently make are pillar, mold or container. I love making candles just like everything else creative it's just awesome to be able to proudly say "I made that"! Do you have carved candles in the UK? I wanted to take classes on making those but they would have been to expensive to sell. Thanks for sharing this it reminded me that it's time to start my Christmas orders. xx Angela

Wonderful to see a production like this. A question comes to mind, what to they do about all the drippings that collect on the floor? In my candelmaking class i teach here in the states, im able to teach mainly only molded versions, so i will refer this video to my students. Im sure they would love to see this dipping process. Thanks for making it available.

    • @thelasthomelyhouse
      @thelasthomelyhouse  5 років тому

I guess the drips only occur in the circle of the carousel - and they dry pretty fast, so hardly any dripping - but you're right - it's a messy old floor and very slippery - but as I said - its not open to the public. Ted is an old pal and he welcomes his friends, but no-one else visits. a bit of a Health and Safety nightmare! xx I hope your students enjoy the video! Thank you! xx
