When I first started using poles I thought it was just about some thing to climb. The idea of making it an extension of the pot was really helpful in my understanding of how they really work. 😁
I've started collecting philadendrons and monsteras a few months ago, and i knew that eventually, i'd had to give them moss poles, but they are so expensive, and i was worried what I'd do when they outgrow them. This series was a true eye opener, and has completely changed my view on plant care. Especially this moss pole making video is so easy and great! Thank you for these videos!

Thanks for the valuable tutorial. I'm new to aroids but not new to tropicals and subtropicals. I view a variety of house plant videos and I wondered why I saw so many moss poles. Years ago I attended an orchids seminar, which began by saying that orchids aren't difficult; they're different. I characterize the difference is orchid roots (through velumen layer) absorb water differently than terrestrial plants having root hairs. I suppose my orchid experience will help if I invest in aroids. Your plants are amazing; so many channels on house plants have a backdrop of shelves and shelves of juvenile 12" plants and cuttings; your collection is impressive, with your floor-to-ceiling scale! I just subscribed so I look forward to future enriching videos!

my moss pole works so well for my monstera. she attaches so many roots to it, and already has 2 leaves with fenestrations at such a young age. your beautiful plants made me want more of my climbers to grow on moss poles, so im gonna make some for them 💚
Oh now this looks like an easy moss pole! I'd actually bought the 25mm mesh for a different project (planter pockets on trees with felt inserts) but will exchange it for the 12.5mm! You can't get big leaves without aerial roots, & I've been meaning to do a moss pole for this reason (had a 5m long M. adansonii, leaves still small!). I remember how huuuuge pothos leaves got up palm trees where I used to live, they looked like whitish split monsteras! I'm still concerned that for my home/porch that the moss may dry out too fast, seeing as I'm not in a humid sub/tropical climate (Melbourne here although getting more bouts of humid subtropical), but hopefully less than if the moss was wrapped around a solid pole. And it looks way easier just to pour the water in from the top than to mist it or wick it or whatever. And I assume with this method the pole can be externally staked if it's extended. And it's not ugly (to me)! Thanks! Great plants! Now to make moss poles for my narrow, adansonii, hoya, dragontail, & anything else creeping indoors I haven't killed yet.

I'm not sure how he makes it look so easy but my experience has been very different. I can not get mine to stand up straight and watering with the water bottle is virtually impossible because it's so top-heavy, and it needs watered much more often than other plants because it dries out so quickly. I'm glad it works for him and hope it does for you, but I have to try a different approach.
I love that you can use the pole as a water medium, but will the moss grow to cover the mesh? I don't find the coated steel attractive. Thanks for the very good tutorial.
@@sydneyplantguy Thanks for your reply! I've seen many get algae in these poles. I'm concerned they could be blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) because those can be highly neurotoxic, and you wouldn't want them in your air or touch them. Sounds incredibly neurotic, but I think it's actually a reasonable concern. What do you think?

Very informative! 👏 👌 I bought a Monstera Deliosia last September and she has quadrupled in size. I bought what I thought would be a good pole... (coir) None of her aerial roots can penetrate it. So I'm hoping to find some like yours or I'll make them myself. Thank you!

I made my first moss poles a couple of weeks ago and have a few questions/observations: - my moss poles are lop-sided and don't stand up well. I think this might be because I didn't roll them evenly. Any tips? - it's winter here in Canada and humidity is around 30%, so the moss dried out almost immediately. I think I'll need to water every 3-4 days. - water is dripping a lot when I water the poles, but I haven't tried using plastic bottles with holes in the lid yet. I'm guessing that this will help because I can water more slowly.

I have a ton of philodendrons and a monstera(normal one lol?) but only my white knight philodendron is on a pole. And it's only a foot tall. Hasn't been doing great. Just bought a setup for 4 48" poles and some new pots , going to work on repotting tomorrow!

What I’ve seen here in Dominican Republic is, they put a narrow pvc tube inside and cover it with moss so they can use the plastic mesh and keep the shape. But I think it gives the aroid less space to grow into the moss pole.

i just purchased a plastic hollow type moss pole that you fill with media. have you tried using drip bags? they should provide a reliable and consistent drip of water to slowly hydrate media

Have you ever tried adding chunky pieces to the sphagnum moss ie coconut husk, leca, bark, etc. for aeration?

Yes you can do that but ultimately the moss is the growing medium maintaining moisture so you wanna make sure there is enough moss in your pole :)
