My grandfather on my mothers side (who I died before I was born), James McLendon wrote the book (of the same name) this movie is based on. James passing was very untimely because he died a few months before the movie began filming (he died on March 12, 1982), and Eddie Macon's Run was his first very highly succesful novel. He did die knowing his book was going to be made into a movie but never got to see the finished film. He didn't get to enjoy all the success the novel would bring him. He lived most of his life in poverty according to my mom, and only enjoyed moderate success during his lifetime, from two other novels he published before Eddie Macon's Run. He had many more novels planned and others he had many ideas written down for. One of them, he even had an active contract with a publishing company to publish when he passed. James died too soon. Trying to talk my mom into looking into getting some of those novels published, as she is holding onto the original manuscripts and many notes James wrote for each. Just wanted to share my personal family connection to this film, and though others might enjoy hearing a little bit about James McLendon that hasn't been widely shared before.
I was one of three extras in the Martin H.S. library. I was walking in the background looking for a book. Although fun and interesting, the scene lasted a few seconds and my career was over.
Martin H.S. was used for several scenes. At the beginning, when Eddie Macon is escaping, the scene is set near the old band hall and FFA building. The parking lot near the old Home Ec. area was used; And the library too. Search "Eddie Macon Escapes" to see more footage.
The chase was between a Mercedes-Benz 300SD and a Dodge Monaco. The Benz has a 5-cylinder, 3 liter turbo diesel engine (near end of movie clip the car was started and there was that diesel clatter, plus the badging on the rear lid)
My cousin and her ex-husband owned a bar just across the street from the Plaza theatre. Bo Duke being chased by Spartacus in my hometown is one of our city's proudest moments.
i was really thinking of doing a "Car Chase in Laredo, Texas 2011 Editon" until i saw the shooting but i thought "i'll just use bb guns" but then i saw the cemetery and the car flipping and my hopes got crushed :(

I remember this was a big deal in Laredo. I lived close to downtown, cops everywhere, and I had a huge crush on John Schneider as a kid. :)
I don't remember seeing so many trees in the cemetery back in the days. I still can't believe John Schneider came here. haha.

"I'm gettin' too old for this shit "...I think Kirk said it BEFORE Danny Glover in the 'Lethal Weapon" movies.
+Rick OBrien Came to say the same thing.
Michael Greene said it in To Live and Die in L.A. as well in 1985.
Tuneman1984 Is he the dude that got his head blown off by DaFoe?
Sorry I missed your reply from ages ago - yes he was. He was William Peterson's partner at the beginning of the movie.
