Don’t worry. I grew up in Southern California and we called them grinders back in the day. It wasn’t until Subway became popular that people started calling them subs.
Funny, I grew up in SoCal and never heard the term grinders before maybe the late 90s, in the context of East Coast subs? Always just "subs" as far as I heard, far before Subway was a thing.
Yes I love In and Out with an Animal Burger and Animal Fry 😁 That’s right we love our sourdough bread in San Francisco Bay Area and absolutely love our Mexican Food 🥰 Thank you for showing California love you did us Justice 😉
My parents are farmers in the Central Valley (almonds and walnuts), and yes, we are blessed, and spoiled, with some of the best fresh produce in the world. We really can grow just about anything in California from fruits, nuts, berries, fresh vegetables, wine grapes, citrus, and yes, even our beloved avocados. Farm-to-fork is a big deal here. I have to agree, Mexican food is better here! I've traveled all over the country and have learned to not bother with Mexican food any where else. I usually end up disappointed...LOL! Also, "wine country" isn't just Napa. There are really wonderful wineries all over California. Honestly, most locals I know, myself included, tend to avoid overpriced and touristy Napa for other areas instead like Sonoma (just over the hill from Napa), or the Sierra foothills, the Sacramento Delta region, or the Central Coast (Monterey, Carmel, Paso Robles). So many great food and beverage options here, you won't go hungry while on vacation here.
It’s crazy how different northern and Southern California are. I’m going to Anaheim and Huntington Beach in April and San Francisco in august, I can’t wait for both trips!
ooohhh if you're into outdoorsy stuff, try surfing in Huntington Beach! They have tons of small companies that offer surfing lessons year-round. If you have extra time, Big Bear is just an hour and a half away from there too. You can hike, mountain bike, and kayak there too.
We have cuisine from pretty much every ethnicity in our state! It's awesome! Head into LA to try out Armenian Food, Persian food, Ethiopian food, visit little Tokyo for any Japanese food you want; we have every other type of Asian food in the valley and in SF, Italian food spread out all over the state, Alpine Village has great German Food; several great French restaurants in Silverlake, Santa Monica, Greek food is abundant too, Taco Trucks all over the place, and the list is endless.....
Thank you for this! Not just Mexican food, but from all over Central America, especially El Salvador (pupusas!), but from further south as well. A newer thing in the San Francisco Bay Area is lots of regional Chinese and Thai restaurants popping up, that focus on a particular region of those countries. Also specialized Korean restaurants (soft tofu stew or else Korean Fried Chicken). And California is the U.S. capitol of bubble tea, although that's now available in every state of the union.
For LA folks, a "world famous" food location you didnt mention that is blocks away from Venice beach is TITOS TACOS which specializes in hard shell crunchy tacos and birria meats. For a french dip I suggest Langers or even Philippe's.
I understand that Philippe's did the original French dip sandwich. And by the way the sandwiches are great there! If you like lamb, the lamb version is delicious. Philippe was French born thus the French dip. Oh, and while it lasts each day, coffee is *$.46". Seriously.
Love California. What great food choices you have listed. I would add great apple pies up in Julian, the clam chowder in sourdough bowls in SF and fish tacos in San Diego.
Being from WA…I never knew how similar our cuisine is to Cali lol. Must be a Westcoast thing 😂. Replace the oranges with apples and we got the same exact food according to this video 😆.
On the subject of fast food, while California and specifically Southern California was were such places as McDonalds, Taco Bell, Del Taco, Weinerschnitzel and others were founded, Southern California is also home to some of the best independent fast food places anywhere in the country. In Pasadena you have Bobby's Place (formally Rick's Burgers), Lucky Boy, and Dena Burgers; in Highland Park you have Penny's Burger; in Glassell Park you have Patra's and that is just to name a few.
Yes, In N Out is pretty much an institution here and it is tasty as heck 😋. They call it the "not so secret menu" and you may be surprised what you can get 😉.
Hello Mark! I even recommend the Indian food in California so strange because I don’t go to Indian restaurants most of the time in the US. I live close to Indianapolis and the options are not as good. I agree with all your recommendations in this video and I’ve tried most of them. I definitely recommend the Indian food and the best way to know whether the Indian restaurant is good as if Indians are actually eating there. And then it’s even better if Indian family members recommend it to you.
a vote for Roberto's Taco Shop here for San Diego, though more are in Vegas now. I miss 24-hour Mexican food on the East coast. And really good Banh Mi.
Hi Mark! Thanks for sharing! I also recommend The Hat in Brea, Ca. It is known for their pastrami and chili cheese fries! 3 people can easily share one order. Order anything with their chili and you will not be disappointed! Also, Norms restaurant is awesome and perfect for families on a budget! They have steak and shrimp dinners for $17 and their gumbo is great!
Don’t forget Asian cuisine, from all over! Some of the most legit Japanese and Chinese food (especially ramen) is in California!! I legit went on a ramen tour when I was in LA haha
Funny enough, I tell my buddies here in North Carolina that there are two things I miss from California.. Family and Food. Not trying to be harsh but the food here in NC leaves alot to desire. Great state tho, Like the environment. I did find the food I like here in NC that hits the spot tho, just in Cali it's not as out of the way like it is here. Now as I have been born and raised in California, I did not know California Style Pizza was that. Now I know there is a California Style Pizza.
OK, I lived in Southern California for several years and I'm a foodie so I like to think I'm somewhat an expert on the food scene there. Here is my take: -The Hat: this is a restaurant with the best pastrami sandwich in the world, bar none. -Tommy's Burgers! Tommy's burgers are served with their very own chili mix on top and is a landmark fast food restaurant there. -Tacos el Gordo: (formally Tacos El Gordo de Tijuana B.C ) is one of the most unique Mexican restaurants in the US. They are mostly located in the San Diego and Las Vegas areas. They serve the best mulas (look it up) which include mozzarella cheese and avocados on it. The line is out the door on busy nights. -Jewish Delis: some of the most famous Jewish delis in the world are in the Los Angeles area. Cantor's Deli is one of the best. You may have a celebrity sighting experience here. -California Fish Grill: for a light, healthy alternative. -The Fish Market: another great fish restaurant. -California roll: speaking of this sushi dish, my favorite alternative is the California salad roll. It takes the ingredients of a California roll and finely minces them with mayonnaise. No large, separate chunks. -Authentic Mexican food: if you want authentic Mexican food in California, just look at any Mexican restaurant with the word "tacqueria" in the name. The clientele is mostly Hispanic so that should tell you something. -"The Taste" or "The Taste of": these are food fairs where you pay an admission fee and buy tickets. Dozens of food and beverage vendors are present with small dishes that cost a few tickets each. It's a great way to taste several different dishes from varying restaurants. My favorite is "Taste of Orange County". Enjoy!
11:31 I grew up in Huntington Beach. Never heard a sub called a grinder until Adam Sandlers lunch lady song. Don’t think I have heard anyone in Southern California ever say grinder.
Good video. Btw, I was confused by your grinder comment. I grew up in L.A. and only ever heard them called subs. I never heard the term grinder until I moved to New England. P.S. California has really great Indian food as well.
The food quality in California is superior. Especially the produce and dairy. Try Taco Bell in Pacifica. Perfect in every way. On the beach , watch the surfers while you eat. Also has alcoholic slushies. The food is not greasy. It's fresh.
I live here. I say skip "California pizza"; if you're in San Francisco or LA, look for a place that has Chicago-style deep-dish if you've never had it. Massa of Echo Park in LA, or Zachary's or Little Star in NoCal. If you're in LA and you haven't had Vietnamese food, try it. If you haven't had good ramen (I don't meet the garbage packets you ate in college), try Ramen Tatsunoya in Pasadena. Yes, there's a line out the door, there's a reason. :) Oh, in LA, you might think "oooh, look at all the Italian restaurants, we can get some good Italian food." Well, good compared to Olive Garden, sure, but hardly authentic. If you want authentic, look at their online menu. If they mention Carbonara, made with guancale and there's no mention of cream, peas, or bacon, it should be authentic Italian food.
I think they put weed in the carne asada because you feel that good while eating and after eating one. My wife asked me one time are you high and I said no I went to Albertos. She said oh yea that explains it. Lol.
God, I miss Del Taco. I love back East now and know so many people out here who grew up in the South West and cannot understand why they haven’t expanded here yet. They’d make a killing.
8:56 Yes, I have. I was going out to pick up sushi from a restaurant with my mom one night to eat Japanese food, and, honestly, it's not that good. (My opinion)
Mexican food in norcal is whack compared to socal. Gotta get it while down in LA or SD! Every time I get off the plane from SF back down to SD, my first stop is a taqueria! Also don't forget the fruit guys. If you see a random guy on the side of the road or in a parking lot selling fruit, it's not a scam, go get some! Probably picked that same day and very tasty
Jack in the Box has bought Del Taco. I like both places but I just hope that Jack in the Box still lets Del Taco be Del Taco and doesn't subsume it. I will be sad if it doesn't keep it tex-mex.🌮🥺 🍔
Nooooooo not Del Taco, that's gross. So many great Taquerias everywhere with real fast Mexican food and yes Carne Asada Fries and Burritos can be found everywhere.
Grinder isn't used everywhere. It is just something you might hear instead of a sub sandwich. I needed to explain that better. My bad! Sorry.
Don’t worry. I grew up in Southern California and we called them grinders back in the day. It wasn’t until Subway became popular that people started calling them subs.
Totally agreed with what Peldyn said! My mom used to work at a sub shop in SoCal called "Grinder Haven" so it was definitely a thing!
Funny, I grew up in SoCal and never heard the term grinders before maybe the late 90s, in the context of East Coast subs? Always just "subs" as far as I heard, far before Subway was a thing.

Shout out to the Central Valley and Central Coast!

I would order Alcatraz tickets now. Seriously.
ooohhh if you're into outdoorsy stuff, try surfing in Huntington Beach! They have tons of small companies that offer surfing lessons year-round. If you have extra time, Big Bear is just an hour and a half away from there too. You can hike, mountain bike, and kayak there too.

I’m traveling to LA for my birthday for the first time and you are a life saver. I’ve been panicking and you definitely eased my nerves!

Carne asada fries are the best thing ever
Lucha Libre taco shop in san diego near little Italy. It's phenomenal and a little hole in the wall, which is how you KNOW it's good
Great tip, thanks!
I recommend the fish soft taco combo at del taco
You forgot to mention tamales. Northgate Gonzalez Markets sell the best especially their pork and their chile and cheese tamales!
Avocados are grown in Southern California. Out near Fallbrook there are tons of avocado “farms”.
Carneys on W Sunset Boulevard have trainwreck fries that are just like that!
The restaurant is a railcar & it’s great value!👍😜

I also second Tommy's but if you don't see the shack, take it back!
Where can I find that chocolate covered pretzel at 4:18 ? It looks amazing!
I live in California and I've never heard of the term grinder. Maybe that's a socal thing?
I’m in Orange County and I never heard of that either 😂
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Tommy’s. Have you ever been to the original Tommy’s near downtown LA?
11:31 I grew up in Huntington Beach. Never heard a sub called a grinder until Adam Sandlers lunch lady song. Don’t think I have heard anyone in Southern California ever say grinder.
More of a Jersey thing, but the Giant Grinder in Single Hill been around since 80s I think, pretty good sandwiches
You can find any type of food you can think of here in so cal.
