    I have thought for 40 years nearly, that this solo is the most magical, lyrical, ethereal rock solo ever. I'm a bit reluctant to try to attempt it because learning and playing it dozens of times to get it something like right tends to take the magic away so that it loses that. I have found this with quite a few guitar solos. What does everyone else think? But many thanks, Justin for giving us the opportunity if we want to take it.

    Riding in the car with my dad when I was about 8 or 9 and he listened to his Dire Straits cassettes it blow me away... The feeling and mastership of Mark Knopfler is my leading star, impossible to copy or sound like. Mark is the best. This is as close as it gets, thank you Justin!

    No one can sing with its guitar as mark does. He is really and litterally speaking using the notes instead of words. It is his magical talent. Thanks Justin for this lesson, and I must say the the brothers in arms lesson is equally superb.❤❤

    I think the way you do these is better than anyone else on UA-cam, and *almost* perfect... there's one thing I wish you'd do and that's just briefly mention what scale these licks come from, and the chord that's happening underneath. For me at least it's easier to memorise all the dots you have to play if I can relate them to a scale. Thanks :)

    Thanks Justin! I've taught myself the piano, though I would not say I'm a musician. I have the entire "Tunnel of Song" nailed to my relatively low standard of satisfaction through "cheat sheets", with the exception of the extraordinary outro. Does anyone know where I can obtain online, for free or fee, sheet music or transcription download for piano, of the outro note-by-note? I know I can't bend strings on the piano unless I grow 15 foot arms, which I'd rather not do. I'm 58, facing some serious neurological issues and before they advance too far, damn it, I want to play this entire song on the piano. Even just once. The only other thing I can think to do is lock myself in my house for about a week when my wife is at work and daughter at school, with headphones on at the piano, and try, as best as I'm able (which isn't especially able) to TRY to transcribe the entire thing, one note and whiff of nuance at a time. Those last couple of minutes are my favorite bit of music in the history of rock and roll. Every time I hear it which must be thousands of times since I was a kid, my mind is blown just as much, or more than ever. Anyhow, thanks for reading. If anyone can offer assistance, I'd appreciate it. I can give someone an email address if you need it. Thanks everyone.

    It's an incredible solo. Based on what y'all know about Mark Knopfler as a musician, how much of it do you suppose was constructed slowly with intention, and how much do you suppose was improvised in the moment? How much was composed of carefully chosen melodic phrases, and how much was drawn from his bag of favorite licks?

    • @justinguitar
      @justinguitar  3 роки тому +3

      Knopfler has a singature style of licks, very recognizeable and typically him. He ties a lot of them together or inverts some directions like ascending/descending. Example: Compare the intro for "Lady Writer" with the solo of "Sultans Of Swing": Both unmistakeable Knopfler style solo's and they even resemble each other but they are different. A different phrase but written in the same language. It's hard to tell what he constructed but he is a strong improv artist. I was able to witness that on several live sets. He blew me away with something different every time :D | LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Assistant
