There is so much good to be said of this moment, one of the best in hockey history. I watched it live on television and it was incredible then, as it is now in watching it once more. Not being American, I just assumed that this was already a popular song and they just liked Kate Smith’s rendition of it. I never realized it was written in 1918 but first released in 1938 by Kate Smith herself. So it was her voice that introduced the song to the world and it became her signature song.

There is so much good to be said of this moment, one of the best in hockey history. I watched it live on television and it was incredible then, as it is now in watching it once more. When the fans present at the Molson Centre in Montreal once booed the American national anthem, I a Canadian, was disgusted and remain so. Kate personified the greatness of the American spirit. What a nation ! What a people!

I was there. In this video, you can hear Kate's voice all the way to the end, because the microphone was picking up her voice for the recording. In the stands, you could barely hear her during the last 10 seconds or so, because the crowd cheering was so loud. The Spectrum was a great place.

Not being American, I just assumed that this was already a popular song and they just liked Kate Smith’s rendition of it.
I never realized it was written in 1918 but first released in 1938 by Kate Smith herself. So it was her voice that introduced the song to the world and it became her signature song.
