- When illiterate coal miner Jesse Hallam uproots his life from Kentucky to Cincinnati for his daughter's critical surgery, he faces unexpected hurdles in the city, notably his inability to read. Determined to provide for his family, he sells their farm and embarks on a brave quest to learn to read, write, and ultimately graduate from high school, all to secure his daughter's well-being.

No way!!! What a nice family friendly movie. Old man in black never disappoints.. All that is missing is the part where he and the Miss hooked off. The two of them would make out a great couple.. Great movie thanks.. Rest in peace Jonny. You were a iron of a man.... 😢😢

Great film it’s been my video collection over 2 decades
Was adopted 2yrs old. Didn't speak English faked understanding. Couldn't read. Mimed everything didn't understand ABC's got sussed out when they tested me in 2nd grade. Mid-year we hit Cali.
Parents were told I had to go back to kinder! Parents said no way. Scraped money together, got me a tutor & helped me after dinner. School put me in special ed. By the end of the year I was reading in 5th grade level yeah.
I was tutoring other kids in the class. A world suddenly opens to me of books! By HS graduation I had done 2 years of college level courses in history & English because I was so bored.
My parents were so upset I had been kept in the SE class. What they never caught on to was I never got caught up in the math area as I hadn't understood any of that. I barely got to graduate. Had to take the test over again with some ER tutoring to get me through HS with a 5th grade level in math!
Was still translating from English to childhood language right through HS. Couldn't learn Spanish although I was a great mime for the accent because I was still speaking German & birth father's indigenous dialect in my head.
My birth family found me years later & I found out my dad was trying to teach me the two most important languages in his family. Dad spoke five languages fluently. Turned out they've been in a horrible accident that's how they lost us hospital didn't think they live. His & moms German & his father's indigenous dialect. Luckily my mom did understand German so she wasn't having a problem with it. She is also very indigenous though they didn't hold on to their language because there was too much racism where they moved to & they just wanted to blend in.
