- Join me as I clear out my closet, a task I have been meaning to do for months!
During the video I discuss the environmental impact of textiles and the fashion industry. How we can make choices to reflect our love and concern for the health of our planet.
Here are some things to think about when buying, organizing and possibly finding new homes for clothes you no longer want…
What materials are my clothes made from? Natural or synthetic fiber? Recycled or virgin material? Organically grown? Naturally dyed?
How do I best take care of my clothes as I wear, wash and store them. Use non-toxic detergent, hang to dry instead of use a dryer when you can, hand wash delicates.
If an item has lost a button, needs darning, or hemming can I mend them myself?
Where did I buy the item from? Was it second hand, new, from a small business or a larger fast fashion store?
If I no longer want it how can I work hard to not let it go to landfill? Can I recycle the fabric, re-sell the item, give to a friend repurpose it, or donate it?

Some of those memorable t-shirts that you may not wear again but want to keep could be turned into a quilt so you have the memories, uses your new sewing skills, & you gain a snuggly blanket to use around the house

I am 13 yrs old and I've been influenced by your ways of protecting the enviroment. I've even started using bamboo toothbrush and tongue cleaner and also started using your special toothpaste formula. I am taking my steps forward to protect the enviroment. I hope everyone does so. For clothes that you still like the fabric but have a stain, consider making quilts! Women in my family have done that for generations to reuse the fabrics but also save money. Some of them we still own and its like being hugged by your ancestors since we know these quilts used to be a part of their wardrobe!! Good luck on this journey! 🥰

There’s something so wholesome and warm about these videos! They’re just perfect company to my day✨
We also need to be careful about the questions we ask. Fast-fashion brands are getting really good at greenwashing. They basically claim that certain item or collection is good for the environment, that it has recycled fibers etc etc but then in the big picture, that item is just a drop of water in the ocean. They are still very harmful for the environment, they just trying to get new customers with values that are aligned with being eco-friendly and more conscious about what they buy. H&M actually uses the word "conscious" for the "clean collection" 🧐
For my personal experience, a person who used to work in a fast-fashion store, I had to quit my job. We got a ridiculous amount of clothes every couple days, like half a ton of clothes, and during sales it was double that!! I got anxiety just going through all that...
I'm glad people like you are talking about these issues. We need a collective change in this world!
Bonnie, I'm embarking on the challenge/journey this year of 'nothing new in 22', and a month in (as a self confessed shopaholic trying to reform) I'm struggling. However, your video has reaffirmed for me all the reasons that I wanted to go on this journey in the first place (and even taught me a few more that hadn't previously occurred to me) and you've really inspired me to continue, so thank you!

While I do think the idea of buying clean or sustainable clothing is so important for the environment, it’s not easily achievable for a majority of people. Many of these clean/sustainable clothing brands are VERY pricey, and people who are barely making ends meets simply can’t afford to spend $50+ on a “sustainable” tshirt. In order to have any real impact prices need to be more realistic for those with lower incomes (which is a majority of the population these days). And the same goes for recycling or reselling clothes. Retailers like Thred Up said they are a discounted reselling company but they jack up the prices of the “original” item that the lower price would be the same as the normal price. I think the best impact would be for recycled clothing at thrift stores! :)

Oh Bonnie ! You've had me in hysterics, I've decided I'm NOT a hoarder ( well of clothes anyway ) when I have a "mass sort out" i take photos of things i think family or friends might like, they have to let me know straight away because I have to box everything up and pack my car to take everything to the charity shops on the same day or the next so I don't change my mind. I find its very therapeutic. Thankyou Bonnie 😊 spending time with you and your videos is a refreshing treat. Look forward to the next one. 💖

I am from Germany where second hand clothing shops have become more and more popular in recent years. There are different models ranging from charity shops, to local owner-operated shops with carefully curated collections, to internationally operating second hand stores. There are also some really cool online shops and apps through which one can search for specific items, brands and styles of clothes that they want to buy. These are also very useful to re-sell discarded clothes from your own closet. For me, the excitement about cool and fitting second hand clothes is always much bigger than when I bought something in a regular shop.
However the most enjoyable thing for me has been to have clothes-swapping-parties with friends! We spend an enjoyable evening in together and show each other all the clothes that we want to get rid of, try them on and swap. This is so much fun and hearing the stories connected to these clothes makes it really special!
Watching this video made me realize how many of those things my family and I we're doing without realizing that it had any impact on the environment. Where I live,in the past people we're pretty poor and they didn't had a lot of options when it came to clothes so a lot of things were from natural fibers(also they were more practical for their lifestyle),hand washed (with a bar of laundry soap), passing down clothes to other people and even when the item became unwearable they cut it and used the rags to dust around the house,make rugs etc. Now this things are a practice in mostly all families around here.

Loved this! I have actually just spent my day in a similar way, sorting through my clothes, handwashing my stained jumpers in the bath and seeing what needs mending and it's been so nice to finally have a good sense of what I have and what I do actually need. I have also been knitting my own jumpers this year and it's not just a great stress reliever but also means I can indulge in my knitwear obsession with a bit more of a clear conscience about the manufacturing and fibres. I have used both Depop & Vinted before and overall I preferred Vinted (not sure if they have it in the US though).

I love to declutter my wardrobe. I go through it very once in a while, which helps me to get rid of sentimental but not worn clothes or clothes that I kinda like but never wear or that I always forget about. And it helps with finding my own style and see which clothes I love and always wear. Also I know exactly what’s in my wardrobe so when I go shopping I know that I don’t need another red jumper, because I already have two similar ones for example.
And I just love fair fashion. Once you wear that you wanna get rid of your fast fashion, because organic clothes are so much more comfortable! But of course - throwing away perfectly fine clothing doesn’t help anyone. So I still have a lot of old fast fashion clothes that I wear until they fall apart
Love your videos. Quick tip I do in my closet. In January I hang all my clothes up with the hangers backwards and as I wear the item I hang it properly. When January rolls around I take all the clothes that are hung backwards out and give them to the thrift or a friend. If I haven't wore them in a year, I'm not going to. Hope it helps.

A friend of mine actually brought to my attention how similar my clothes are. I saw a pair of shoes I really wanted and almost bought, but my friend said something like “you literally have that same type of shoe at home , you don’t need one that’s just a different brand.” And that’s when I realized most the new clothes I buy, are essentially clothes I already own, but with tiny unimportant differences. It’s helped me really look at what I’m buying and think about if I already have something in my wardrobe that is close enough to the same thing in the store.
I haven't felt this calm in a while. Thank you for making and amazing platform to not only share your knowledge, but to also share it in a way of comfort and calmness ❤

I have to admit that I do own a lot of fast fashion clothes, many are second hand but I also bought many pieces from the shops. What I can really recommend is washing your clothes inside out, they last you a lot longer ☺ So if you feel like you have to shop at these stores, still treat your clothes like treasures. The longer you or somebody else uses them, the better ☺ I treat all my clothes as if they were made of delicate fabrics, no matter if it is a cashmere jumper or just a viscose top. This video really motivated me to go through my closet again and donate and resell some clothes☺ I am glad I found your channel 🥰

I just did a massive closet clear out and I'm embaressed to say that some pieces still had tags on them 🥲 I always tend to do the whole "...but I still MIGHT wear it!" One thought: cotton jersey t-shirts - particularly ones that are tired in the seams or have mild wear and tear - make amazing hand-sewn undies. They’re super easy for beginners to sew without a machine, and so comfy.

The love that I feel for this channel doesn't explain...o better it said, absolutely yes. You are so inspirational, funny and having a real good vibe. This video in special made me feel so proud of myself, 'cause I take a lot of care my wardrobe and it always in the most perfect possible relationship with the environment. My closet is very little and the majority of the items were inherited from my grandmother, mum, sister. I also do love buying in second hand stores. Here you can find invaluables treasures.

Thank you Bonnie for this video what my parents and I have been doing is donate our clothes and I learn something knew about clothes. It has been helpful to give it to goodwill or to the Ronal McDonald house for the families that live their with their children with cancer.
