    The summer had arrived and Gabriel was shedding fur excessively. Typically, coalition brothers assist with grooming, or they rub it off by rolling on the ground, rubbing against trees and branches, or it sheds off over the months. I wanted to assist by trying a cat and dog over the counter pet shop rubberized brush. It worked and Gabriel actually LOVED it.
    Most encounters I have with Gabriel, and I'm either laying down or he lies near me, it ends up in a play fight. It's scary for me because we don't do it often. The growls, rough action, play biting and claws are intimidating. I got a dew claw in my hand on this one, but only a scratch. It's expected when being this close to the predators you care for. I just hope Gabriel's friendship and affinity for me prevents him ever escalating to a point where he would purposely injure me. It's why I always end it sooner than he wants... like this time. So far, so good. But I realize there is always that chance, and I accept the risk to make the animals in my care happy. That means greater mental health that I combine with better physical health.
    Thanks for watching!

    It's cute, Gabriel loved the pet de-furring brush (went on for almost 15 minutes), but ALWAYS wants to play fight after our encounters. Most times he walks away and rolls around, inviting me to play fight. But I don't like it... :) I allow it if he's right there initiating it. He's rough about it and so yeah, it's scary, and I limit it to a few moments because ALL cats can escalate fights. At least Gabriel innately knows NOT to bite hard. It's his dew claw that typically gets me. Most predators and other mammals learn how to play nicely when they have siblings growing up. Gabriel did not have that pleasure and instead had three unrelated females when cubs that didn't play with him like this.
    The Coyote Peterson moment is reference to his unique way of educating about wildlife by allow them to bite, sting, poison, slap, poke or stab him...

      Just discovered you from the Google news feed. I used to watch Big Cat Diary reruns for years. It's a wonderful way for young kids to see how precious wildlife is. I suppose not just young kids but African adults as well. Hopefully one day they'll figure out that there's more $$ and jobs in preservation and eco tourism, than hunting.

      @0therun1t21 I should have been more precise I guess. Slowly, VERY slowly, the 3rd world in general is learning that it's a better idea to sell animal viewing tickets at $50 per person, for every day of the animals existence, than to get $5k to guide a hunter. Problem is, it's hard to explain this to a 3rd world guy with hungry kids. They don't seem to grasp the concept of extinct critters. Then their kids will be real hungry. Nothing to hunt or photograph.

    I've noticed the same in domestic house cats.
    They're much more gentle with bare skin.
    My theory is, cats (or probably animals in general) don't really understand clothes. So they seem to think our clothes provide the same protection as their fur.
    In essense, they regard our clothes as our fur.
    I mean, clothes *do* protect as well when it comes to thermal insulation, but definitely not when it comes to protection from claws and teeth.

    • @CheetahWhisperer
      @CheetahWhisperer  6 місяців тому +5

      That's right. I've been bitten hard under clothing before and why I show skin when play biting 🦷. Fabric and things in-between are not organic and how they know the difference but don't realize it ls US underneath there. They tear up toys, knowing its not real. Probably thinking our clothing isfur innately, like you mention.

He is big for a housecat (18lbs) and he also had no siblings to play with and other cats will not play with him, so he always wants to play fight and bite with me. I was thinking I was doing something wrong, but when you explained about Gabriel...well, I am all Buddy has to playfight with, too. So now I understand better and hopefully I'll find a way to work something out with him that he won't hurt me but I won't leave him feeling frustrated either.

    • @CheetahWhisperer
      @CheetahWhisperer  6 місяців тому +1

      "comparing your cheetahs to their house cats" Absolutely NOT. I've learned a lot from cat folks who share their experiences and teachings. Also, it helps the algorithm with every letter typed in the comments section 😃 And yeah, you gotta trust them (if they like you) to allow the play fighting. It makes them happy, brings them to their primal cat nature, they know how to control it, and it helps further bond with them. There are ways to teach an animal bite training. Look it up.
      Cheetahs chirp like a bird and whine some, growl some, and even runs away when a play fight bite goes too far. But we humans can mimic some of that, but would not move away from it. Just talk, yell OWH! but read up on it. We teach leopards not to jump, bit and scratch in similar ways. NO hitting back! Makes them not respect and love you but fear you

      There was a volley many years ago at another project where she was stopped by customs because they found white lion fur in her baggage... 🤨 She got in trouble and not sure what happened. Wildlife laws are seriously enforced, even though you would think shed hair would be innocent. If I made this wristband out of Gabriel's fur, I could not wear it outside the project.

      Mostly scratched. That is how a cheetah solves most conflicts when it comes to blows. Rarely do they bite unless they are fighting amongst themselves or hunting or attacking a person for numerous reasons.
      I've never been actually bitten out of anger. My nose bleed a lil when one played too rough and I tried pulling my nose out. Slight cut in corner of nose.

    Do any of the cheetahs you work with have dog companions? Or is that not wide spread for cheetah care? I only briefly read about cheetahs and dogs a few years ago.

    • @CheetahWhisperer
      @CheetahWhisperer  6 місяців тому +1

      Nah, not common. Dog companions happen in zoos, not cheetah projects, but most cheetah projects have dogs and most cheetahs are indifferent to them unless real tiny... meaning triggered to chase them. They see dogs all the time as dogs are really good at protecting the projects in South Africa which are most wild areas. Keeps baboons, leopards, destructive animals and dangerous humans away.
      Zoos place dogs as pups with young cheetahs when they know they will not have siblings growing up. ProbBly due to buying only one. It's to keep them occupied because the zoos won't allow too much encounters with their cheetahs for liability sake and done have time to enrich them themselves. Better zoos have enrichment training directly with their captive cheetahs, walk them among the public and some encounters.

    Genuine question: when you say “too dominant “what do you mean. Would Gabriel bite any of the other handlers ? Has he ever bit you with more intent then nipping?

    • @CheetahWhisperer
      @CheetahWhisperer  6 місяців тому +2

      Gabriel is very dominant and had bitten one staff member at another project causing bite mark injury. He is also a charge up male cheetah 🐆. He is aggressive to other male cheetahs and even some females.
      He is off limits to most staff, but recently the project owner had been working with Gabriel. He had tried to grab some people and play or take advantage of them.
      He does and tries what he wants. Dominant. He gets mad sometimes if he does not get what he wants. Like being angry with me in last video. Wanted left alone.
      I think much of his dominance is sexual in nature and tries to take advantage of women. Sexually charged but knows I am big enough and strong enough to not allow it.
      He entered a pen of another female cheetah at another project and they fought as he tried mating with her. He's been stopped trying to grab a female staff member twice. So off limits to most people.
      But this makes him.a GREAT breeder in my opinion. Dominant and so would his cubs in the wild.

Need proper housing, space, low stress, the best natural nutrition, expensive medical care and wild diets and clean water, environmental polluted water troughs and so much more. I’m guessing that Gabriel understood some of the words, and the inflection of Dolph’s voice indicating a request. I think the bond is so strong that Gabriel is listening and watching for signs of a request. The level of intelligence and affection is amazing! I bet Gabriel knows his name AND that “buddy” is another form of his name.
    Dolph’s work is important because cheetah’s are rare and vulnerable to extinction in the wild. Future generations should be able to see cheetahs in the wild AND cheetahs play a role in keeping nature in balance. We REALLY don’t want to find out how an environmental imbalance impacts humanity (even the most selfish among us).
