This is one of Van's greatest songs in his vast canon of great songs. This was right in the middle of what I consider one of his golden periods (1986-1993) -- Guru, Poetic Champions, Irish heartbeat, Avalon Sunset, Enlightenment, Hymns to the Silence, Too Long in Exile. A surge of high quality and extreme focus.
@Mike The Bike Agreed Mike, though I'd date the beginning to Into the Music (1979) and the end to Hymns to the Silence (1991), though the latter would probably have worked better as a single LP.
@Mike The Bike That's exactly how I think about it too. Although you could also add Inarticulate Speech of the Heart (1983) to that list. One of his greatest and most spiritual albums!
This is a message to Sir van morrison your muse has the holy Grail in his possetion, he also has the philosopher's stone your old friend was living in the new forest but is keep to take us back to the old forest. Your old friend requests you help for projet Donkey. I take you understand what I mean I a volentary patient. At St Georges, St George's request your help to bring heaven to hearth. Alexander wishes to see you to discuss project Donky. I will make it worth your while, I always keep my promise, God bless you forever and ever the trinity needs your help. God speed Sir Van xXx AGD

To me, this may be the last really great song Van wrote.
Listen to Beauty of the Days Gone By from his most recent, could easily be on Tupelo Honey.
Do you want sugar in your tea?
Huh?
