Rough Ground Sea Fishing - One Of My Favourite Spots!

- Back to Gavin and Stacey country at Barry Island for a spot of Rough Ground Sea Fishing, on Nells Point. Not far from Whitmore Bay, this is one of my favourite South Wales Sea Fishing marks along the Welsh side of the Bristol Channel, I have been fishing it for many years, since the 1980s and there's something magical about the place. In this video, I am fishing over rough ground, not easy fishing but many different species can turn up such as Cod, Codling, Whiting, Pouting, Rays, Smooth-hound, Conger Eel, Bass and more.

Great show totally agree fish should only be killed for eating and no more than what you need. Nothing to report this end been waiting for a calm day to get the boat out plaice fishing and the calm day hasn't happened last time I spoke i was going dab fishing which didn't go well either l will get out soon happy Easter

Gareth I’ve always liked the way you handle and return your catch with respect compared to many others who talk about fish care but drag fish all the way up the gravel only to fling them back without due care. Your respect matches your affirming and positive attitude and demeanour. Thanks for the effort as always.

One of the best marks in south wales, if you are brave enough you are generally rewarded. I’ve had some big cod off there in the colder weather. Great video Gareth
Yes I agree with you there Stu, one of the hardest, if not the hardest mark I fish but it can be rewarding as you say. I think over the years I've probably caught 10 or so species off there, I love the place. Cheers for watching, much appreciated 👍
@@riversidewithme have you ever tried straight off the front onto the mix of sand and rock? It needs to be fairly calm. I had some of the biggest fish I have ever caught off the front

Great one Gareth, we used to curse the silver eels years ago but hardly ever see them now.
A bit like the dog fish there are so many of them, but they help us beat the blank.

I love your whole approach to fishing and your respect for wildlife, good on you mate. I can totally relate to so much of what you say in your videos, especially about memories of fishing with your Dad, had some amazing times fishing with my Dad, and fishing the same old places keeps the memories alive. I had a walk down Brixham the other day, you’ve said you love it down there, the sea looked cracking (inbetween the torrential showers!), just wish I took my rod! Looking forward to the next video. Yes Brixham was lovely fished your spot by the rail had a big brown crab 2 lobster 1conger about 8lb 1 small bullhuss and a few whiting and pouting over a couple of nights so not bad at all whish I lived there so relaxing in till the last day then the dred of going home kicks in hopefully I'll get back down in October November time again all the best looking forward to the next video 💙

I went to a rock mark over west whales about 15 year ago and as I came down the cliff and on to the mark and there were five doggies swimming in a rock pool I went to put them back in the sea and someone had cut their fins off that find still makes me sick to this day anyway great watch Garreth glad to see you out again

Hi Gareth great to see you back. Fishing is poor all over at the moment 😢, where I live in Kent we have only Dogs around at the moment, when compared to last year we were catching Rays, Whiting, the odd Codling & Dogs. What you have said in your video is definitely correct down here with over fishing responsible for most of the lack of fish. Earlier this year the commercial boats took over 100 tonnes of Rays from my local area & since then I’ve not caught one.

Really enjoyable video as usual mate. You always capture exactly what angling is all about, the wildlife, the plant life, and of course, just enjoying being out amongst nature. Sadly that has been lost these days, its all about the latest gear, catching specimen fish, most anglers these days have absolutely no idea or care about their surroundings, you do and that's why I love your videos so much, even down to your choice of background music, brilliant 👏

For me nowadays, I just enjoy spending a few hours next to the water and being at one with nature, any fish I catch are a bonus. I know exactly what you mean. I was lucky enough to spend the best parts of 15 years in the angling game as an angling writer,sponsors, radio appearance etc etc and in the end the whole reason I started angling was lost to me. I decided to pack it all in, do something new and never picked a rod up for 3 years. I'm back at it now, strictly as a hobby and strictly to relax and unwind, the wasy it should be.

The weather has been terrible this year up to now non stop wind and rain, that looked okay though, listen to the water and chill with a bonus couple of fish,

Thank you Jon, it was nice to be out there again. I'm ok thanks, hope all is good with you and yours. So you park in Nell's Point carpark (pay and display), I think it's open between 8am and 11pm. Just a short walk then to the marks, the side nearest to the carpark is easier as the ground is cleaner, personally I'd suggest fishing it on a smaller tide. Cheers 👍

To be honest I never enjoyed fishing nells point but as they say each to their own..
Maybe it's because my car was broken into the last time I was there.???
You are one hundred percent right about the fishing situation at the moment ..
Perhaps it will improve ?? Perhaps if they stopped allowing raw sewage into the rivers ..it would help...
However you might find the fishing better on the other side of the channel..

Ah that's not good, never nice when your car gets broken into..I hope karma caught up with them! I think that definitely explains why you're not a fan of Nell's point! Yes the fishing on the English side seems so much better than it is over here these days, when I was a kid it was the other way around! I hope things are good with you, have a nice weekend 👍
What an excellent video and congratulations on reaching 6k subs. Well deserved. Clearly what you are doing attracts the viewers. From the beautiful music at the beginning and the short quotes you have started putting up all add to the experience. A nice little session all in all even with the doggies.
I know you said you weren't about showing tying rigs etc but the only rig I ever see used here is a straight forward paternoster rig apart from a whiting rig which differs a little. It has a hook at the end with a running ball lead with a stopper so the fish catch themselves. Would love to see the flapper rig.
I totally agree with you re fish and animal welfare in general but if I ever catch a Garfish or King George Whiting, they are coming home with me. They are the equivalent of 35 pounds and 45 pound per kg respectively in a fresh fish shop but they are both a rare catch for the same reasons you described.
I'm so glad you get out and get to fish on your own without the hassle of always filming. Just a little jealous!!

I know I said I was going to do another giveaway but after the last one, I vowed not to do another one, it was too much hassle, grown men moaning because they didn't win, ridiculous. Yes I've always been big on fish welfare, I guess I respect nature in general. Nothing wrong with taking the odd fish for the table and so I wouldn't blame you for taking a Garfish or a King George Whiting. I'm pretty sure I showed a diagram of a flapper rig on one of my early videos, I'll take a look and will let you know. The next video will be next Friday, I had a session this morning, weather was spot on in fairness. Unfortunately seeing doggies dumped in bins, thrown way up beaches etc is becoming way too a common occurrence & again it seems to be the minority of so called 'anglers' responsible....sad state of affairs mate...

Happy Easter Jon, nice to hear from you again. Yes I love this mark, there's something special about the place and you never quite know what's going to turn up. Disgusting isn't it, I don't know how people can be so cruel and as you say, it's becoming more and more common. I had a session this morning and that video should be ready for next Friday. All good this end buddy....just finished lambing & busy planning for the Summer/Autumn.
We've had so much rain this winter that I've just let the pond do it's own thing....I put in a few gallons of maggots & casters over the last few months, just to help the fish along...

Those doggies are fierce looking when you pull them out of the sea, but the little cutie pie in that rock pool and then cwtching up in your hand like that was really sweet. Imagine shoving that in a carrier bag in a bin. Shame.

Thank you bud. Yes I do sometimes use crab at this mark, although I can rarely get it up my way these days. I've had some nice Bass off this mark over the years, can be great on its day. Cheers for watching 👍
