We discuss Megyn Kelly’s recent comments about blackface during a segment on her show about offensive Halloween costumes. Real fam, what are your thoughts?
I don't participate in that day but as a person of color, Megan said nothing which offended me at all. I think the media blew this way out of line. Whatever happened to sharing an opinion, remember freedom of speech is still in the American construction.
Vee Just because it didn’t offend you doesn’t mean it’s okay. There is a history behind blackface and it’s just not okay to do. You can still portray a character without changing your skin tone. It’s really that simple. You should remember that Freedom of speech does not protect you from criticism/consequences from the public.
Vee just because it doesn’t offend you doesn’t mean it can’t offend other people, and freedom of speech is a thing yes, but this women has a platform. She doesn’t need to say all of this stupidity. It’s not like you just said it to herself. She said it on national television
black sparrow Freedom of speech should not be used as an excuse to say whatever you want to say even if it’s racist and offensive. She is on national tv with her own show and millions of people watching. If people see that she can say things like that and still be on tv, they will think it’s okay too. She is too grown to be playing stupid. What she said was irresponsible and just because it didn’t offend you personally doesn’t mean it’s okay. Please don’t make excuses for these people because they sure as hell don’t make excuses for people of color.
The difference is basically what loni said. Black face is a characiture. Black Americans don't look only one way. There is no special traditional dress for black people. Some parts of Africa, however, wear certain garb that is part of their culture, so do some Native Americans. I don't see it offensive for ppl to admire a culture and dress in said garb. Black face is, "let's make fun of black ppl by painting our faces BLACK (tho the skin is different shades of BROWN) and making the lips extra big (although many black people's lips aren't that big and many races of people have naturally big lips) and hop around like a fool as if all black people act like fools." But I don't see anything wrong with someone dressing up like another culture as long as it's dignified, tasteful and done to compliment them.
@@TTeeee you dont see it because you dont understand, the regalia(clothes) worn have sacred meaning. They are not a costume, and are ridiculed constantly, theres even a team called the redskins. And natives are exiled to reservations like a concentration camp. Learn about our history
"you can be a white Diana Ross." exactly. if i'd dress up as some asian character i'd not make my eyes slanted either so it's not ok to paint yourself black for a character
@Shy McLean it amazes me that many people don't get that being black is not part of a costume if you can't make your costume work without painting yourself black then it's a bad costume a person can wear a one glitter glove and people immediately know that person is impersonating michael jackson
Dave Connolly stop being ignorant if you’d have done some research you’d know why she straightens her hair blacks are discriminated against their natural hairstyles like afros, braids, twists and locks, and only recently california became the first state to ban discrimination against natural hairstyles blacks being FORCED to straighten their hair is different than whites CHOOSING to paint their face black, not to mention straight haired people weren’t mocked and discrimination bc of their straight hair like blacks bc of the color of their skin you can’t compare the two
Roland Martin broke it down. And Tamera surprisingly made one of my points that Megan is too old not to know better. And her affiliation with Fox and racist behaviors tells me she is well aware of what she was saying. There are two ways to take what Adrienne said.I was glad Loni interrupted her.
I get what Adrienne said, I mean I can see where that statement can be taken wrong but my friends and I talked about this last week. I won't ever know what it is like to be an African American, because I'm not, but I do respect their culture and their background, just as my African American and Caucasian friends won't know what it is like to be a Latino because they are not, however when we sit and try to understand other's culture we respect it and they respect you as well. Jeanie, Loni and Tamera were making good points, I mean I can see what Adrienne was trying to say but I'm glad she had a group of friends that stepped in when they did. I absolutely loved Jeanie
Megyn knew what she was doing. Her production team had that Diana Ross blackface picture prepped and ready to go. And her “apology” basically said the PC police are too sensitive. She was very intentional about what she did.
Chris Gonzales You May not understand what it is to be AA but many Latinos and darker skin Dominicans know what it is to be discriminated against. If you look up what black face represented you don’t need to be black to understand why that would be offensive.
Tamera i see you with your shady comment “ you learn that by looking at your surroundings making sure your group of friends are from all around the world and not one type “ because that👏🏻 panel👏🏻 was ONLY👏🏻 white 👏🏻people 👏🏻 speaking about racial things

@@kristin4840 Usually white people bring that movie up and I find it interesting because I learn their not really offended by it but mention it just cause they can as if it equates to the dehumanization of black people blackface does. White chicks made fun of rich white Cali girls harmlessly. The main characters end up being friends with the girls and sing a thousand miles together. So maybe you're right, there is such a thing a whiteface. And this is as vicious as its gotten? White chicks did nothing to white women except make them laugh.
@FreedomLiberty76 Sure whatever you say. I enjoyed tropic thunder when Robert Downey Jr did blackface or when the Wayne brother did whiteface for White Chicks. The stuff was cool back then but now and days it should be left alone.
I appreciate what the ladies said. Jeannie is well spoken. I have to say though, that I love Megyn Kelly! I honestly I was NOT offended by her comments as a Black person. For sure, the disgraceful history of Blackface is appalling. What I saw on her segment was an honest person, asking a question and trying to have a conversation. That is what I want to see more of. People should be free to honestly ask and question. And obviously, she probably did not know the history. Why attack someone? She is smart, beautiful, and talented. I admire her so much. Very few people are honest and open, tell it like it is and not be politically correct. Mercy. Where is the grace? We ALL need grace. Much love and God's blessings!
Halie83 In a day and age of information and technology at our disposal, ignorance is a choice. If she didn’t know, then she better be more well informed as a reporter bc I don’t want my news from her ever.
Oh don't be ridiculous! Megyn Kelly has a Juris Doctorate degree, she knew about the racist history of blackface. Just like Trump supporters knew his parents were high ranking members of the KKK We're just not buying the "I had no idea defense in the 21st century!"
@@rebeccapak4535 Hey I'm multicultural and my best friend is black. I'm guessing someone presented her a topic and she responded. I would have answered the same way. If people want to be flavor Flav or lady Gaga, it's all good! On the flipside, I see where your coming from but not a lot of people are going to know that. I wanted to remind you there is a lot of different kinds of people and we are not going to know that. Same thing the other way around a black person isn't going to know about Indian, Japanese, Russian. Here is the thing though everyone knows what Halloween is. What is says is legit and positive. Who goes out into the world and says oh look at that Asian person or black person. People say hey looks it's Flavor Flav. Look over there it's Carrot Top. Look it's Jay Leno. Look it Tupac.
Thank you! Megyn, said "Black or white people should be able to dress up as each other, as long as it's a character." She was not saying that the old "black-face minstrel show" was okay, just character portrayals. A white lady could love Niki Minaj, for example, and a black lady could like Kim Kardashian, and portray them on Halloween, just for fun. There's nothing racist about that, that is admiration for someone of another race!
Halie83: Yes, it was clear that Megyn didn't get it, and had no malintent. However, she has no integrity with me, as a result of her being a shill for Fox News during her years there as a Fox TV personality. Megan was complicit with Fox's agenda of wrongly and misinforming people on issues that had them vote against their own best interests, and instead voting for the interests of a wealthy corporate class. Besides, Megan just should have known. I'm an old white female elementary school teacher, and just KNEW that blackface is NEVER OK , even as a gesture of respect. The history of blackface is so saturated with dehumanization of a group of people, in a way that perpetuated a deep culture of cruel and abusive actions. How could Megyn NOT have known that?
Honestly, I thought Megyn was just telling how she grew up and forgot to censor her opinion since as a white woman reporter any opinion not compassionate or compliant will get her attacked. We are supposed to listen to each other, both sides(races) have a perspective and she must not have that much variety in friendships, but said what her childhood was like, she was being honest and not not rearranging her words to be safe or to be fake "woke." Do you want a non-black individual to pretend to agree with you or be straight up with you so that you can have a discussion with them?
Exactly what I thought and I am a black woman. Nothing she said was wrong, she was just saying how she grew up geesh! I'm tired of people getting mad over someone else's opinion or people having to say sorry about every single thing. Allow people to have an opinion. I believe it's being fake when we apologize for our own experiences and say sorry. Smh so annoying
The argument I keep hearing is "well what's the issue? It's just cultural appreciation" If you want to appreciate the culture why don't you learn the language? learn how to make the cuisine? learn about the history and events? talk to individuals from the culture and learn about their struggles? attend cultural celebrations? There are so many ways to appreciate a culture without dressing as them.
@@heyayup but it´s so sad to not grow out of it as a society. We would cancel a way of celebrating people because of a moment when we diminished them, we allow our failings to be bigger and stronger than our growth, that´s just so sad. If we keep reinforcing that blackface is wrong, then we will never grow out of the pain.
This is ridiculous! Look I'm not a fan of Megan, but she only asked a question about someone dressing up as a character on Holloween. If anything, someone that wants to dress up as Diana Ross is showing appreciation for the culture. As long as they're not doing it in a derogatory manner, I don't see what the problem is. Plus Diana Ross is a part of American culture, I don't see why people want to segregate themselves from the rest of America. We should see ourselves as Americans, not by color. If this is such a big deal then where was the uproar for the movie White Chicks? Exactly there wasn't one, and trust me that wasn't showing appreciation for a culture, it was making fun of one. But who cares, this is America! Freedom of Expression, remember. I wish the left would get off this divisive agenda that there on and realize that every citizen of America has rights, not just their like-minded leftists counterparts.
It's not offensive to dress up as a black person, the problem is with the undertones of racism that come with it. Majority of the same people who claim to not see why it's offensive are the same people who try to pretend that Donald Trump isn't a bigot, what a surprise!
IMPENDING DOOM Where is the racist undertone in this particular issue? That's my point, as I said if it's done in a derogatory manner then be upset, but even then don't strip away someone's rights. This wasn't that type of issue, but even if it was, we should never take away someones right to freedom of expression and speech. You may not agree with it, but you should agree with the ability to do so. There is nothing you can say or do, outside of calling for violence, that I wouldn't fight for your right to do so. Once either side of the aisle begins to lose their rights so begins the fade of all our rights.
Lalka Marie, I'll watch the video, but regardless it doesn't matter. If it's not calling for violence, then it's fair expression. It may be disgusting and idiotic, but we're not forced to watch it, agree with it, or even be affected by it. It doesn't matter if it hurts someone's feelings or reminds a person of bad things. That's the point, Americans have a right to freedom of expression and speech. We are free to have our opinions, free to feel the way we want to about any issue, free to criticize, and free to be the kind of person we want to be. We're not always going to have people doing things we agree with, but it does mean that people have the right to do things of which we don't agree. People have the right to dress up as white, Asian, Mexican, Native American, or any other person that they'd like to portray. What's really sad is that this type of thing happens all of the time, but if it's not someone on the left then for some reason it's always blown out context and then they want to strip away people's rights. This is a dangerous path that we're on, and I implore you to reconsider your stance on these types of issues. Would you rather have your feelings protected and lose your rights, or keep your rights and not let someone else's idiocy affect your feelings? We've made tremendous strides in our country, and things will never revert to as they were as long as we have our rights!
DaeZem The racist undertone is the fact she's from Fox News and many times made tone deaf comments in the past. And do you really want to talk about rights? People that say stuff like this are why everybody has to be defensive today, you're complaining about rights but won't utter a word about police brutality or vote suppression. You most likely will never even have the same outrage over corporate greed, gerrymandering, or housing discrimination. PC culture isn't the problem, america being retrograde decades after the civil rights movement is the problem.
IMPENDING DOOM First I was referring to the person dressing up as Diana Ross, not Megan. I'm not here to defend Megan, I don't know what her feelings are and I don't care. I deal in a world of facts, not emotions. I'm here to defend the right for someone to Say or Express themselves in any way they choose. Your comment is a perfect example of why there is such tension in today's society. The problem with PC culture is that it approaches political issues from an emotional standpoint instead of looking at the facts. You're not a mind reader, but since it made you feel emotional it's a bad thing and people shouldn't do it, BS. You're citing things that are not based in fact, you're citing leftist talking points that have no basis in truth when it comes to the actual data. You want to talk about police brutality, what about the fact that this false narrative has gotten innocent officers killed and increased tension between cops and citizens. Are there bad cops, yes, but the data shows a very small percentage. Voter suppression, what about the fact that the left has continuously allowed illegal immigrants to flood the country and allowed them to vote, which suppresses the actual citizens' vote. Corporate greed, your leftists' leaders & groups are supplied endless amounts of money from corporations. Housing discrimination, we have laws to protect against that and they are enforced. Although the left's agenda has put millions on food stamps and incentives people to stay in poverty. That's what the promotion of free does. These are the facts and these are what matter. People have to stop bringing an emotional argument to politics, there's no place for it. When you do that, you are asking for the very thing you say your fighting against, fascism. You can not take away someone's right to do something because it makes you feel a certain way, that's asking for a world that adheres to only one sides viewpoint. That's why I stand up for these rights and I always will. If you do a little research you'll see that the lefts talking points are based mostly on opinion or misconstrued data. They find an issue that pulls to your emotions and use that to fulfill their agenda. They know this is the best way to control someone, when you're emotional you are much more likely to follow an issue blindly.
No one is saying that. If you want to be a ninja get a shozoku and be a ninja. Do not put tape on the corner of your eyes to "look more the part." If you want to be a knight, get chainmail and be a knight. Do not paint your face a lighter shade.
@@MitchYouCantScratch Jeannie said "someone's culture is never your costume". Obviously stereotyping an ethnicity is wrong. I see nothing wrong with celebrating another culture in our multicultural society
@Abby Lena Did you read what I wrote? Obviously dressing as another ethnicity is offensive. I don't see anything wrong with dressing as another culture.
@Abby LenaSo are knights or ninjas or cowboys acceptable? No mythological creatures because they are all from someones culture. No dead people because that might offend people. Lets just end Halloween
I understand why not Blackface. But idk why some people get offended by costumes. Esp about culture ... I don't celebrate Halloween (cause it's Satan's day and all) but if people want to dress up as a Mexican like with the Sombrero and mustache.. I don't feel offended by that. Esp cause Mexicans don't dress like that. that to me says I like your culture. If we're gonna get offended by things like that then let's call out non-Mexicans that enjoy tacos or tamales as well.

I don't think people understand what Megyn Kelly was saying. She wasn't referring to historical Blackface. She was referring to wearing makeup to look like a character on Halloween. The two are not the same. She asked "what is racist" and spoke about Black people and White people painting their faces. She put them on the same level. She wasn't referring to historical Blackface where Black and White people would paint their faces with burnt cork, greasepaint or shoe polish, wear wooly matted wigs, white or red exaggerated lips, etc, and portray Black people in negative stereotypes. Blackface was not only about makeup, but also about portraying Black people with negative stereotypes, from their language, dances, clothes, education, etc. Historical Blackface, which is actual Blackface, is NOT what Megyn Kelly was talking about.
I’m from Australia and have not seen this racism Lonis talking about, I may just not be seeing it though! All my friends; white and black are all so educated on this stuff and HATE racism. Three years of our high school history classes were dedicated to things like Australia’s lost generation, the civil rights movement etc. The portion of people I know from Australia DO NOT tolerate racism. But hey, I’m just one person in one small city. I may not be seeing the bad stuff that goes on
She probably should not have made it a general statement about Australia, but I think she was referring to the Australian artist who drew a cartoon of Serena after the grand slam incident, you could Google it, I think it was that incident she was referring to, but it sounded like a general statement but I don't think she meant it that way
"Someone's culture is NEVER OK to be your costume.... Ever". Sad. So, why this issue is so fraught and confusing is that, according to this panellist, by her rules it would now mean that NO-ONE from another culture can EVER be your hero, to the extent that you want to BECOME them, through dress-up. So, really, that would mean that ALL dress-up costumes / role-playing should cease. No more little kids in Spider-man / Superman / Batman outfits; no more Elvis impersonators; no more drag-queens (appropriating being a woman!); no more Cowboys and Indians (think of the cultural shift required for little white dudes to even WANT to be the Indian now!); definitely no little African American kids (girls OR boys) dressing up as Elsa from 'Frozen' and signing 'Let It Go' at the top of their lungs; and DEFINITELY no non-black person wanting to acknowledge the power and character of ANY of the heroes of Wakanda! God forbid! Which reminds me; NO MORE NATIVITY SCENES!!! So, the question seems to be, 'How far do you go with the imitation?' Everything BUT the colour of the skin? Does a white Wakandan remain easily identifiable? All right people? Is this a case of throwing the baby out with the bath-water? (And, maybe, why Megyn Kelly thinks Santa Clause and Jesus were WHITE! She only ever saw WHITES dressing up and playing those roles WITHOUT correctly copying skin-tone?.....) I completely get why African-Americans feel that Al Jolsen Black-face was a demeaning stereo-typing (along with Golliwog dolls and cartoon characters); and has tonnes of negative emotional and cultural baggage. Also, why the whole Wakanda world is an all-too rare example of Black empowerment and of being cast as the central, authentic, intelligent, powerful good-guys is a rare (hopefully changing) cultural moment. Natural to want to keep that for yourself and not see it 'appropriated' by those who don't deserve it. As far as an outsider can, I think I get that impulse. I guess all I am suggesting is that the conversation and thinking around this needs to be a little less superficial. Is it possible that someone who is NOT from 'your' culture could try to imitate the image without being flippant, demeaning, insulting or crass? I think so. If not, no more Leis or palm head-wear given out at Hawaiian or Pacific islands on arrival or at ceremonies. Here is the question. Can imitation and adoption of cultural icons encourage understanding and inclusion, as opposed to being a mere insult, as this panel member suggests. My suspicion is the answer is, 'No', at least not for a generation or two AFTER America finally comes to terms with its rampant racism (whenever that is). In the meantime, I guess we just have to accept that we have to get well past the time when American politicians can imply their black opponent is a monkey before imitation is seen as a complement, not an insult. Sad.
@@deborahfrederick916 Yes, you are right, Deb. I'm just sorry that you feel that none of your role models are good enough for me to want to emulate. I felt they were better than that. I'm sorry you don't.
If you appreciate a certain culture why do you have to dress up as them and mock them? why don't you learn about their history? or their language? visit their countries? etc. Characters are very different than real people with real struggles. What the issue comes down to is essentially, why should people get to dress up as a culture for one night without experiencing any of the struggles they face when the real people deal with being from that culture everyday and face issues of discrimination and racism. Also why do a characters skin tone play such a significant role for their traits/ appearance? it seems that this only occurs when the character is non-white.
I think if you’re doing fictional characters like the mad hatter it is okay to paint your skin to appear lighter, white, and pale. The mad hatter is pale white. I think people need to understand the difference between what is offensive and not or what is cultural appropriation and not. If you’re gonna be a black panther character I would say you can wear the costume but there is no need to paint your skin black. There are obvious do’s or don’ts. Maui from Moana, I think there is no problem to wear the tattoos that Maui has but I think it’s unnecessary to paint your skin brown. I also think that people need to give everyone a break.
I love how the white people in these comments are telling black people how they should feel about a topic that has a long history of dehumanizing and justifying violence and the mockery of black people. Please get over yourselves. Offending a race as a whole is not okay for you to play dress up. Period !

4:00 “Unless you’ve actually been through the struggle, you’re never really gonna understand.” True. I often find that most of the people who are wondering why this is such a big deal are the people who aren’t really affected by this.

Al Jolson fought against black discrimination in the early twentieth century. He did the "blackface" act to mock the idea of "white supremacy" by showing the value of African American musical/cultural idioms. Consider that black people could not perform in these venues during this time, so he painted his face black to give a sense of presence in these venues. He was one of the most popular singers in his time period and he did it by singing African American influenced music, which helped bring the attention of African American music to white audiences. He was also an activist for the black community, and is noted as being one of the earliest individuals in popular culture to bridge a cultural gap between blacks and whites in the early twentieth century. I'd hardly call any of that racist.

OMG! All she said was when she was a kid, it was considered okay to dress in blackface. It shows the changing of the times. People need to focus on REAL issues.
I am in no- way saying black-face is by any means okay. However, I do have a question. Many girls look up to different Disney princesses/characters that are of a different race to them (i.e Mulan, Princess Tiana, Moana, etc.). What happens if a girl who is of a different race want to dress up as one of them? Would there be an issue with that. Obviously if it was my child I would not paint their face or body black, but I feel like dressing up as them could also become offensive. Please explain. I am not in anyway trying to argue, just curious.
There is no problem with wearing the costume of the characters. The issue is the historical significance of "the black face" and how it was used to mock african americans.
I’m very young and I’ve lived my whole life in a small country. I’ve never seen anyone disrespect a race by dressing up as one of them. Before I saw this I really thought it was okay for a white person to paint their face and body brown. The same goes for brown skin painted white. Is this not okay just because of the history behind portraying a different race? Do you think that if no one ever used ”blackface” or ”whiteface” to mock one another it would be okay to cosplay characters of other races (including skin color ) I’m not american so this is the first time I’m hearing about this.
As Loni said "you can be Diana Ross, but just be a white Diana Ross!" Let your kids dress as whatever they want but do not change their core characteristics like race. Kids usually want to be Moana because of strength and character. Teach them that they be all those things and still be themselves. They can adore a character and adopt the good traits but they don't have to look exactly like them. That lesson will take them far in life
Jenna Mäkinen exactly. It is not okay because of the historical significance! In an alternate universe where blacks weren’t made into caricatures to be mocked maybe it would be okay to make the black face.
For some reason before black face was used to insult black people but now it’s a trend to make yourself darker as a white person cause it looks cool. Throwing out and recycling our culture is being full of it.
You know it's interesting, I've watched this show several times and enjoyed it, and never really noticed there's not one white person on here. 🤔 You shouldn't expect people to feel the way you do, they haven't experienced or felt the way you have. I've had lots of friends who have no idea what it feels like to be me. I don't get upset or offended by them because their experience is nothing like mine. It's sad that in this time everyone is offended by everything now. I do agree that black face is an ugly thing but don't expect other people to understand how you feel all the time.
thats why you get educated not be a dumbass all your life! If u not sure ask questions. What black went through you will never understand until you are them. Respect other cultures just as you want your culture to be respected. It is fuckn common sense, for white person to color their face black to mock a black person. get educated!

I'm down with that. Doing Costume is kinda silly, but you gotta convince those who are into it. "Should" implies morality, that needs explanation other than your cheap feelings.
The main issue is making fun of others. If you are trying to be like somebody else as your costume just make sure you do it in a proper way with decency and not making it for fun or jokes. That is the issue and not the costume. It's how you do it.
She did say that she GREW UP KNOWING THAT IT WAS OK IN HER HOUSEHOLD...with a character in tow...IT'S HOW SHE WAS BROUGHT UP...remember REAL fam some people are still taught to taunt the race..whichever race, and think its ok!!! We still have to teach everyone of all ages and races!!!
She wasnt making fun of race with a costume? She was saying if a kid wants to be a character for Halloween what's the big deal here? I guarantee if a black boy painted his face white to be a ghost NOBODY would say a word , white ppl would not say anything cause it's a kid and it's no big deal. If an adult does ok I get it (except the movie tropic thunder) . I feel like it's ok for the black community to say white jokes and make fun of the way white people act and talk or anything but if a white guy makes a black joke or talks black than all of a sudden they are racist. Thats The problem with the world most black ppl these days perpetuate racism more than white do and keep it going . And saying "you never went through what we did " news flash none of you lady's at that table went through slavery .... so ... and just for the record I'm half black so it's hard to say this but it's the truth , the race needs to stop be victims it shows weakness and insecurities
You don't have to understand it for it to be wrong. I don't understand how any self respecting American can call themselves a member of the Nazi party or a white supremacist. But there you go. That is their right, I don't have to agree with it.
Wayan bros doing white girls? Dave chapelle playing a white guy? Robert Downey Jr. In tropic thunder? Jimmy Kimmell playing Carl malone? Megyn Kelly only asked a question. She was trying to figure out if wayan bros, dave chappell, robert downey jr., and jimmy kimmell, are blood-thirsty racists or not. I am going out for halloween tonight as Michael Jackson despite being half chinese and half irish. I'm doing this out of respect and admiration for a legend. Luckily michael died white so darkening my face is optional but because of the social hysteria I am certainly going to blacken my face. Sue me. I will dress as the young michael, the most iconic michael, the thriller michael.
@@laneeardink9849 Blackface is when someone dresses as an African american wo/man and portraying them in an inappropriate way while having dark makeup on. So go through your list and you decided who should be in that category.
She did not say it’s okayyyy to do that now. She said WHENI WAS KID!! Did anyone get that I revised this interview over and over and she didn’t mean anything by it!
Jeannie if you're saying this then you should be checking things Amanda say because she generalizes white people all the time. Not all white people are bad. Tamara had a white husband he's a great man. My dad is a white man married to a Mexican American woman. I am married to a black man. I am and have been through the struggle but I also know there are good white people.
"Someone's culture is never your costume" this is bs. Of cause you can dress up as other cultures as long as it's done in a respectful way. Can you not dress up as Vikings, Ninjas or Romans either? It's culture
Ok so, I'm going to share my thoughts and I know I'm probably going to get a whole lot of hate comments pointed at me especially since I'm going to state that I'm a black woman. But I'm doing this because I want to know if there are any other black people who are questioning this to. When I look at non POC do blackface it angers me. When a white person dresses up like a gangsta and puts on overly dramatic big lips and all the other things we get stereotyped as it really does offend me. And it should! But when I heard about this black face Diana Ross (dressing as a black celebrity that she admired not some random stereotyped black person) I really had to think about it because my feelings were conflicted. I wasn't as mad as everyone else was by this. The reason being is because I can remember watching Eddie Murphy's Norbit (popular black movie in 2007) and when I watched Eddie put a full on costume with yellow skin to look like an Asian man (Mr. Wong, I think his name was) I never saw that as wrong. I was thinking about this Diana costume and I'm like "Ok, well you don't have to blackface to dress up as Diana." But then it dawned on me "Ok but Eddie didn't have to yellowface either. They could've just hired an Asian person." Does anybody think about this stuff? I never even thought twice to connected it to basically being the equivalent of a white person putting on blackface. And (please correct me if I'm wrong) I don't remember a whole lot of black people finding this wrong either. I just don't want to double standard. I want my feelings to be consistent for all races/skin colors. So I guess maybe it's something I need to continue to work on and think about or maybe I'm entirely wrong but it bothered me that everybody finds this Diana costume wrong but nobody was really pointing fingers at Eddie's Mr. Wong. Idek 🤷🏾♀️
Interesting that she said that with no problem letting it roll off her tongue and felt no empathy. Now these publiic figures feel an apology will cover the band aid on top of the wound. Sounds to me Meghan was raised that way and living a lifestyle of bigotry becomes a normal way of life. She said back when I was a kid it was okay as long as it is a character. This is the most common comment push on Blacks by Whites there a rare few who bleach there skin that are black and it's not to be White it's to be lighter. Also not all whites have straight hair so again it's not trying to be White. +Janel So true. What most people fail to see if your instinct is to call out something or someone racist first you're more likely the one that's a racist.
When I Google blackface, I understand how people can be offended reading the history but that Meghan Kelly lady is talking about face paint. Face painting to be your favorite character like flavor Flav with a cloak or someone you like for Halloween. It's all good. It's obvious on video she wasn't talking about the other blackface in history. Miscommunication. The Asian lady on show she twisted words. Like what a gossiper does. I hate people like that
Al Jolson was NOT racist. Yes, he did perform in blackface. So did many others. Behind the scenes Jolson fought for equal rights for black performers. He demanded equal pay, equal accommodations, and equal billing. To call him a racist is extremely ignorant.

@@alexsegu2712 You are judging him by today's standards. We have no idea the pressures performers were under a century ago. It was in a time when blackface was not considered racist. And remember that a century ago blackface was extremely common and not considered demeaning by most people. Sounds like you have a lot of learning to do about life in the past.
One of the most cringeworthy videos I've ever watched. A bunch of women gasping at someone simply stating that, "Back then this was okay." It was! Then this black woman on here says that a, "Guy named Jamal probably said Naaah Dog..." Who's stereotyping again? This is a joke.
Since someone’s culture isn’t someone’s costume. No more Indian costumes, no more Native American costumes, no st. Patty’s day costumes, hell don’t even dress as a cow! No animal deserves to be someone’s costume, right? Also, she said when she was a kid that was ok. That was what, 50’s-70’s (??? I don’t know when she was born, honestly). I guess since everyone gets offended over something as simple as a costume, let’s never dress up again. You can’t be a princess, you can’t be a fairy, you can’t be a fireman, a police officer or even a scuba diver. SINCE IT’S SO OFFENSIVE
I think the black hosts on the panel need to appoligize for racial appropriating white people's racial characteristics, by straightening their hair. I'm deeply deeply offended.
Me: Hello there living person, fellow human being..how are you? This generation: Are you purposely trying to not be offensive? Me: I was saying hello but, maybe a little... This generation: You're racist and I'm offended.
OMG....whooooo cares. It's Halloween and if someone does that...it shows who they are because its not tasteful. But freedom means you can. Al Jolson was wrong for doing that. Unfortunately, it was in a time that it was not frowned upon.
The lady said "when I was a kid it was ok" That means not only is she STONE Racist but so is her family who brought her up to be that way. People like that do not give a rip if it's offensive. Once those lights and camera cut off her you think she is still apologetic? Absolutely Not!!

I'm Scottish and if someone of any other culture or ethnicity wants to dress up as William Wallace with a Kilt, Sword and stereotypical Ginger wig, I say go for it. Having said that, I have not been persecuted or enslaved, so perhaps THAT's the root of the issue? Maybe someone can tell me... Surely it can't be just as simple as apparent, cultural appropriation? I've dressed up in a stereotypical Mexican hat and clothing before for a party and had no idea I might be causing offence. But I would pretty much expect that any Mexican in the room might feel the same about me as I would feel about them dressing up as a Scot. Totally cool with it. I'd hope.
Black face and dressing up as a black person is different. I say avoid painting your skin period because people are still discriminated because of it, and it could really hurt someone. Not you being the character. And yes- dressing up as a "typical" Mexican vs. an actual person is messed up. If you stated names of people you were dressing up with I could understand.

This still happens in mh country and people think is totally ok? Last year, when Strangers things got big, many people dressed as the black kid, with blackface. And if you said that is racist, they said it isn't because they are not doing it to mock him, but just to represent him. Even this Christmas a TV channel celebrated their anniversary : by dressing up as The Jackson 5, in blackface, and singing a song for the audience. What is wrong with people!
People are too sensitive and always looking for something to complain about. Nothing wrong with what she said. She was asking a question and if they had a black person on the panel, they could have cleared it up for her. Calling someone a racist is a serious accusation and its thrown around way too easily. Im not convinced she’s racist. I think she is ignorant about some things like many white people. We need to be able to have conversations about racial issues without people being worries about being called a racist because they don’t know or understand something. Folks need to grow up.
I get why this is offensive and I hear it and would never condone it. On the flip side though the Wayans brothers made millions of dollars at the expense of white people and "White Face" when mimicking and exaggerating white people's features, emotions and preferences.. there is no difference so if you going to tear down Megyn Kelly for black face ok as a costume, then tear down the wayans brothers for okaying white face in White Chicks and pull it from thd shelves, and movie networks!! It is not ok either, it is a stereo type and no matter what excuse given for doing so, it is NOT okay either!! Don't dish it if you can't take it!! Black people make fun of white people all of the time and for everything and get paid for it and justify it. White people say one thing out of uneducated ignorance and not even for entertainment purposes and they get fired!! Please!!! Very double standard and hypocrisy!!
What an amazing diverse panel. What would complete it is adding a Middle Eastern and/or Indian (South Asian) woman to the table, those voices rarely get much air time.
On Halloween last year I saw a white girl with high water pants, suspenders, and glasses I immediately thought of Urkel no black face. When she said did I do that def him.No racist mess.It was cute.
Blackface is never okay... no matter what you mean by it. I agree with Loni. You can dress up as a person without changing your skin color!

She is too grown to be playing stupid. What she said was irresponsible and just because it didn’t offend you personally doesn’t mean it’s okay.
Please don’t make excuses for these people because they sure as hell don’t make excuses for people of color.

@@gingerderrick7423 it's disrespectful, because "Indians" aren't a made up thing. It's a real culture thats still alive.
Black face is, "let's make fun of black ppl by painting our faces BLACK (tho the skin is different shades of BROWN) and making the lips extra big (although many black people's lips aren't that big and many races of people have naturally big lips) and hop around like a fool as if all black people act like fools." There's nothing racist about that, that is admiration for someone of another race!
Halie83: Yes, it was clear that Megyn didn't get it, and had no malintent. However, she has no integrity with me, as a result of her being a shill for Fox News during her years there as a Fox TV personality. Honestly, I thought Megyn was just telling how she grew up and forgot to censor her opinion since as a white woman reporter any opinion not compassionate or compliant will get her attacked.
So we can't be knights or ninjas because they aren't our culture? Get tf out of here
No one is saying that.
@Abby Lena I think we shouldn't ruin Halloween for the many because everyone gets offended at something. Just deal with it
I understand why not Blackface. But idk why some people get offended by costumes. Esp about culture ... I really love how diverse this cast is! They all bring great opinions to topics like this!
You don’t wear someone’s race as a costume point blank period!
I may not be seeing the bad stuff that goes on
She probably should not have made it a general statement about Australia, but I think she was referring to the Australian artist who drew a cartoon of Serena after the grand slam incident, you could Google it, I think it was that incident she was referring to, but it sounded like a general statement but I don't think she meant it that way
Lisa Kinsale oh I see! Thanks for the clarification ☺️

She only ever saw WHITES dressing up and playing those roles WITHOUT correctly copying skin-tone?.....)
I completely get why African-Americans feel that Al Jolsen Black-face was a demeaning stereo-typing (along with Golliwog dolls and cartoon characters); and has tonnes of negative emotional and cultural baggage.
Sad.
Mark Lapworth 👏🏻
I still say you have enough role models to emulate, jist leave ours alone. And you don't have to agree with our point of view for it to valid!!!
@@deborahfrederick916 Yes, you are right, Deb. I'm just sorry that you feel that none of your role models are good enough for me to want to emulate. I felt they were better than that. I'm sorry you don't.
the reality is that is totally okay to dress up in ethnic costumes for halloween. Nobody cares if the culture is white, that's for sure.
Period !
Those people have a real bad habit of doing that.

White People are still trying to figure out how we did all this back in those times with out them. Your stereo type of blacks need your help or we cant do great things or simple things is incorrect. Whites helped their self to our music * secretly would seek into our clubs to hear & dance to it. Then had us come perform it ,yet didn't allow us to eat or be customers right were we worked entertaining them, & often like Pat Boone used & desperately tried to claim our music for their own.
Do you think that if no one ever used ”blackface” or ”whiteface” to mock one another it would be okay to cosplay characters of other races (including skin color )
I’m not american so this is the first time I’m hearing about this.
That lesson will take them far in life
And thank you for asking❣️
Jenna Mäkinen exactly. It is not okay because of the historical significance! In an alternate universe where blacks weren’t made into caricatures to be mocked maybe it would be okay to make the black face.
For some reason before black face was used to insult black people but now it’s a trend to make yourself darker as a white person cause it looks cool. Throwing out and recycling our culture is being full of it.
DRESSING AS A CHARACTER. Not making fun of the Character.

She said "when she were a child" it was okay during Halloween. She was speaking in passed tense.
If you are so worried about minorities skin bleaching were as Asians skin bleach more than any group and make their hair blonde more than any other group. I guess they are trying to be White too because a hair color and light skin is something owned by the White race.
There was nothing wrong with what she said, just look at the audiences agreeing with her on the back. When it comes to black people, it’s always assumed / taken racist! My God! 🙄
saddest part is the woman did not even actually dress in black face she just discussed and questioned it for 10 seconds. smh.

So true. What most people fail to see if your instinct is to call out something or someone racist first you're more likely the one that's a racist.
@@jm-hb9tl yep. projection
I hate people like that
*Al Jolson - Blackface - research 🧐
No malicious intent
Isn't her question exactly about what Jimmy Kimmel did with his impression of Karl Malone and what Robert Downey Jr did in Tropic Thunder?
I’m glad everyone in the comments are on the same page. Media is a business and I watched it and agree that she didn’t mean any harm.
She SAID “WHEN SHE WAS A KID IT WAS OK.” Why are people saying she said it’s NOW OK?
Your beautiful and smart. God bless u
Black women get so emotional and annoying.
NBC was hoping her following from FOX News would follow her. She tried to soften her tone, but she is who she is. Match point.
Al Jolson was NOT racist. Yes, he did perform in blackface. So did many others. Behind the scenes Jolson fought for equal rights for black performers. He demanded equal pay, equal accommodations, and equal billing. To call him a racist is extremely ignorant.
What is ignorant is a white person teing black people what is racist. Stay inyour own lane. We don't need your agreement to define what racism means to US!😖😖😖
@@deborahfrederick916 Now that is truly an ignorant remark. Racism isn't just about black people.
@@alexsegu2712 You are judging him by today's standards. We have no idea the pressures performers were under a century ago. It was in a time when blackface was not considered racist. It's easy to look back at something and judge it. We have to learn not to do this. The past is what it is. What's important is to learn from it.
ua-cam.com/video/f5Tm7bMUhUw/v-deo.html
@@alexsegu2712 You absolutely are judging the past by todays standards. And no. Performers did not always get to choose what work they get. They have to eat and so take jobs that pay the bills. Are you a performer? Do you really know anything about what performers used to go through? Doesn't sound like it.
Al Roker is the person that let Megan know...He was heated!!!
As long as the person doesn’t mean to insult then it’s ok to wear the heck you want
Nowadays white historical characters are appropriated by blacks. Jodie Turner Smith is playing Ann Boleyn.
I had to think of Dave Chappelle and his blackface joke with the Indians 😂😂
They all have "white hair"
So….the movie “White Chicks”……🤷♂️
One race! The human race, descended from Adam. Made in the image of God! Educate yourself, read a King James Bible.
You do not need a "we are the world" group of friends to know when something is racist.
Why are all these ladies so offended
Ray Ray omg are you dumb?
Maybe you all should look up why al jolson wore blackface . one he was jewish and two he was protesting why black couldnt get jobs.
On broadway.
I think the black hosts on the panel need to appoligize for racial appropriating white people's racial characteristics, by straightening their hair. I'm deeply deeply offended.
if you dress up like a serial killer you might offend serial killers...
David Ramirez If I dress up as a Hispanic in handcuffs and a sombrero trying to cross the border, would that offend Hispanics?
Me: Hello there living person, fellow human being..how are you?
This generation: Are you purposely trying to not be offensive?
Me: I was saying hello but, maybe a little...
This generation: You're racist and I'm offended.
OMG....whooooo cares. It's Halloween and if someone does that...it shows who they are because its not tasteful. But freedom means you can. Al Jolson was wrong for doing that. Unfortunately, it was in a time that it was not frowned upon.
Alexa ,Play You're A Dee Dee Dee by Carlos Menica.
Our freedom is slowly getting ripped away from us.
Stop apologizing!
the thumbnail on this video 😂
Oriental is not racist.
Honestly, I can't agree with this segment unless I know their views on "white chicks". Resembling things go hand in hand.
Oh pls.. everything about black is an issue. PS: Im from different etnicity.
The lady said "when I was a kid it was ok" That means not only is she STONE Racist but so is her family who brought her up to be that way. People like that do not give a rip if it's offensive. Once those lights and camera cut off her you think she is still apologetic? Absolutely Not!!
Becasue it WAS ok, Same was slavery WAS ok. She never said it's ok now or that she supports it. Analyze first and then leave a comment.
@@jennygarcia6495 The only one that needs analyze clearly is you. How did argument begin? Did it stop right there at it was ok or did it proceed further by doing what? You heard what the hell she said you just feel the same way she does. Agree in silence and chose the word game with someone else.
@@jennygarcia6495 Slavery has never been okay??🙄😭
Madison what I mean is that people back in the day viewed it as something normal.
@@jennygarcia6495 she clearly said it as to what is the problem Recently but I digress.
No one ever mentions us Native Americans in their discussions,WHY!? This filth happens to us every single day,yet no one in the black community can realize we don't have a voice. We're not put on tv to share our stories and you can't help to even mention us in your discussions? WHY!? White people as a whole are not going to speak for us but black people understand this,as clearly shown yet again in this instance, yet again not a peep about us! WE ARE STILL HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Megan is very intelligent. She knew exactly what she was doing. This has to be all staged. My guess is,the ratings were not doing well enough,so they were canceling the show. They figured, why not go out with a moral lesson is my guess.Anyone who thinks Megan Kelly would go on a rant like this without it being an act isn't actually looking lol.
That said,it's a damn shame no one in the black community can just mention us once in a while for lords sake.Black's let me ask you this for example; How long do you think you'd let let the NFL get away with calling a team the N...er's? You wouldn't for one day right? How vile.I'm sorry for even using this as an example, please excuse me.The point is there is just as an offensive NFL team to us Natives called the Washington Red...ins.We take this as just as you would a team called the N..er's.Just mention us in your discussion too please!!! They don't invite us on TV to hear our voices! I know you understand so please include us!
Listen and listen very closely to what I say: Blacks will NEVER gain equality until Native Americans are respected and honored too.Our very foundation sits on mass genocide.Until we come to terms with this and start honoring all those 500+ treaties (not a single 1 has been you know?) our very foundation continues to erode.Don't ever forget this.
Very unfair dialog to Ms. Kelly. Totally taken out of context.
What is offensive about oriental? Is occidental offensive?
What about White Chicks?
What an amazing diverse panel. What would complete it is adding a Middle Eastern and/or Indian (South Asian) woman to the table, those voices rarely get much air time.
On Halloween last year I saw a white girl with high water pants, suspenders, and glasses I immediately thought of Urkel no black face. When she said did I do that def him.No racist mess.It was cute.
