So I love fighting games. I've been playing them at a tournament level for 10+ years. And I've always been afraid of chess because I see myself as an intelligent person and I never wanted the game to expose me as a moron. But I realized that everything Michael and Luke said about chess, I've been saying about fighting games for years. Maybe I'll give chess a shot, newly secure in the knowledge that my lack of experience doesn't mean I'm actually stupid.

Chess is an amazing game. It is very very very hard because it's incredibly complex and there is no hidden information, but if you play against a player of the same skill level it's a blast. If you want to play Chess go on one of the many many apps or websites that allow you to be matched with other players based on MMR. I also sugest everyone who think chess looks interesting to watch professional chess. Not only can you learn how to play the game, but especially in the slower modes, trying to spot the best move is really fun, and whenever you get it right it feels so good.

Need some chess personalities to react to this video. Would love to hear their opinions on this discussion.
Chess does have its elitist community but they can be ignored most of the time. The majority of players don't usually act like that and usually are open to explaining the game and playing with others.

    • @EmmaBonn96

I love chess for multiple reasons, and I can safely say that the comments in the video from twitter just aren't fair.
First of all, in all the major sites and apps for chess, you have an ELO rating, so you play against people on your level. It's impossible to always win or lose, yet you also always have room to improve
It feels as rewarding to go from 800 to 1000 elo, as it is to go from 1400 to 1500, and it's not like any of you are gonna be professional players in any case. Games can be short ( 1 minute Bullet games), medium length (10 minutes rapid), or classical, which is long, so you can play at any time from anywhere.
I don't get the whole elitist comments, maybe it's because the game is only about skill and some people are used to relying on lucky dice rolls to win, we have none of that here, no unfair wins. You pay for your wrong decisions and deservedly lose. I think this is what those twitter comments are about

would love to see a similar video on poker. the guy's point about there being no luck being what makes chess great is exactly what i think is great about poker. it's deep and strategic and at the same time anyone can win any given hand. luck and skill aren't opposites and games that can have high quantities of both are, imo, the greatest games. obviously for the channel, actual gambling might not be the direction you want to go but i'd be interested to hear your thoughts

My big issue with chess is that at roughly even skill levels it's fun, but I feel it's really hard to find opponents on the same skill level, as even online chess sites with ELO matching are still self-selecting for people who play chess semi-regularly, so even with the option to start at a beginner ELO rating, I still feel I have to lose a lot in order to get to a rating where it starts being fun, and usually I just quit before then.

Also I like boxing and fighting and when you get into the game it's like a psychological fight to use the puzzles to outsmart the other player. It's like a war when you can get into it. The people saying it's not good becajse they suck well just keep playing till you don't and then it becomes more fun.

I've been watching a lot of chess videos recently, and I'd always thought that masters crushed non-masters, and grand-masters crushed masters, but most of the games seem a lot more even than I expected.
They weren't competition games, just friendly games, but it makes me feel that chess has a much broader audience and a more even playing field than I expected.
Like many things, it seems that you can get to 90% of a grand-master's skill just playing casually, but the decider in those games comes in that 10% of hard earned nuance that takes 90% of the grandmaster training time to learn.

Yeah no shit a game is more fun when you are equally matched that’s like true for pretty much any game. I feel like most board gamers play a game once or twice and the community for that game isn’t as large so all the non max strategy hasn’t been found so it isn’t like someone can just look at an online forum to get better at it. Maybe some games are fun to get better by playing them rather than studying them.

It's Berne ! Berne is the Swiss capital. I know it cause I live in Switzerland. :D Which all of a sudden makes this knowledge of mine way less impressive.

Well actually, Berne is the political capital, Zürich is the economical capital, Geneva is the international relations capital and Lausanne is the (world, not only Swiss) Olympic capital so it's understandable that people get confused. I do too and I live in Lausanne. xD

Chess looks complicated to learn, but in reality it's easy to learn how to play. It's that it LOOKS hard, I think, that puts people off to learning it's basic rules. That is where the smart person game stereotype comes from.

    • @tylerhellums9823

The thing about chess is that if you know how to play, you LOOK smart to everyone else, but in truth you aren't. That's why I think everyone should be willing to learn how to play chess.

Chess is okay. I don't think it is a bad game but other games of a similar fashion I find are better. Games I prefer to chess, that are similar at least, are Stratego and 32 Dice. Then there are games like Star Realms/Hero Realms which are fun 2 player combat games or something like Memoir 44.
Chess is okay, but for me no more than that now.

A someone who played stratego and chess they aren't the same style of game. In chess you ahve full knowledge, in Stratego you don'T. That makes a world of difference.

Video games, especially turn based games, are made to mirror Chess. If it wasn't a good game, it wouldn't be made into a gazillion different kinds of video games.

I can play pretty well although it's difficult to know how good you are as too many people lie about how good they are even when they are not so don't get your hopes up about it. A person can risk playing advanced and immediately the computer sets their ELU to 1600. If they aren't they won't win it but their ELU drops on the next game to something like 1373 the next time they play which still is better than they are. So if you beat that personthe ELU it shows may be skewed. I reached 1762 yesterday as I am not obsessed with the game just play when there are no other games to challenge or when I don't have much to do or killed the sodoku or str8ts up to all the levels.
Playing with a person can also be confusing because they might say they are a pro when they aren't really that excellent and should be modest. If you win in them you get a heightened feel that you are falsely a pro. Just play for brain exercise on the tablet in bed or on a day when not much is going on that's what I do anyway/

Chess is good but if you have the same people to play with it gets boring. There's a lot of people that don't like it because they don't understand it.
