Thank you for mentioning this here. I don't believe I remembered to credit him specifically with this concept. I might have said somewhere in there that I was thinking of his style when I put this video together, but after looking at it more I think it is exactly a groove that I saw him teach in a clinic video that a friend of mine had from the 80's
I've been playing drums for 53 years meaning since Christmas 🎄 Day at 5 years old. I started learning drums by pretending like I was the drummer on every song that came on the radio. R&B, Blues, Pop, and Gospel .. now I have experience from a high school band that later released 2 hit songs that were played in about 11 different states. The first song was "Stay awhile", 1984 2nd song was "All I want is you" 1986 by the B.A.D band. The independent success got me on board with Soultone Cymbals !!!!
I've been playing drums for song writer friends for 9 +years but have only been religiously using practice pad and trying to get better for the past year and a half.i wish I did it sooner because everything has gotten better since learning rudiments
What a great groove! Thanks. I’m 63 and been playing since I was 10. Still playing and having a great time. I love videos like this and now I have more time to learn.
I’ve been playing drums for 22 years; since I was 17. It’s about a couple of years that I have been seriously practicing to get into something. I have found THIS particular lesson interesting. Hope to see some more videos like this from you, Brother.
Started playing in 1970 until 2006 when I permanently severed the tendons in my hand in a work accident. Started playing again 2 years ago. Thanks for the lesson.🥁
This is the lesson I've been looking for! I've been drumming for ever, but I didn't start making real progress until I started taking practicing seriously...
I've been playing about 50 years. I love videos like this. There are a lot of things that I just take for granted and or have forgotten to practice in my daily regiment.
That's the idea! Take something that simple and move it around the kit. Constantly grow and learn from the basics. Case in point, try this combination as straight 16th notes KLLKLKKL (kick and left on snare) and play 8th notes on the hi hat with the right hand. It's so simple but when you keep the ghost strokes down and pop out the 2 & 4 it sounds dope.
I'm 63...if you count my pre-kit period when I played on an old kitchen chair cushion (to e.g., Jackson 5 songs) and then from December '73 when I got my first drumkit (no name, blue sparkle), it's been at least 50 years!...I played on acoustic kits until around '06, and then on an e-kit until '11...since around '83, my kit playing became less frequent... Since '11, my playing has been more so on tables, on my stomach, or on my car steering wheel (when the car is not moving)...but I'm a drummer...I bought another acoustic kit in '22, but being in an apt., it is more to be visually admired than played...I have had my sights on moving to the SW, but I am not sure if the drums will go with me or be sold... I love drums and tinkering with their tuning and arranging...I paid my dues regarding make-shifting (bedsheets underneath the heads may get a chuckle)... Thanks for your lesson...many years ago I had considered a straight double-stroke groove, starting with 2 left ghosts on the snare and ghosting after the downbeat - but I think I like yours more(!)....
I’ve been playing for approximately 43 years. I don’t think about it often, but it’s Crazy to realize the duration of time. And oops, it’s actually been 45 years, after doing the math!
This is a great idea! Turn any pad sticking exercise into a linear groove if you can find a groovy voicing! I studied hand drumming (conga and djembe) for two years. After a looong break from drumming now I am studying the drum kit (3 months). Video lessons that bridge rudiment exercises to actual grooves and beats are quite useful and motivating for me. Instant subscribe, looking forward to your future videos...
I love hand drums! When I started out I wanted to be the aux percussionist in the band and not the drummer. But no one needed that so I learned to play drums. In school I was in drum line and studied classical with a great teacher in college but never drum set. So, everything I know comes from rudimental snare drum and classical thinking of orchestration. Thank your comment and I'll see you next week
Thank you for contributing to the conversation, Congratulations on 60 years of time well spent doing this thing that we love. I've been at it for about 40
you just blew my mind... Hobbyist drummer, been piddling around on and off for 20 years... Just started learning rudiments and trying to learn how to properly count...
I have been playing since the age of 15 (1985), when I was in high school. I just discovered your channel and enjoyed the video a bunch. That is a great groove. Subscribed.
I guess I'm going on two years now, I play guitar for 20 years but my brother left his Tama star classic babinga set at my place and after a year of staring at it I said well damn it I know a paradiddle, then I was off. I'm reading David Garibaldi's Future sounds..
Gabriel - this one is super cool - sounds so killer when played fast. As simple as it is - it was a definite brain twister for me at first. Started at 40 (!) bpm with the 16th notes on to count the e-and-a… and then it all started working. I put this in my practice routine. Thanks man!
Subscribed! Great channel, just started watching. After having played for almost 25 years, I stopped and haven't picked up a pair of sticks in ages. I would like to get back into it, albeit gradually. Your videos will definitely help. Can I also ask what metronome it is that you use? Seems like a good one. Thanks.
Nice one! I played for about five years back in the nineties - I stopped playing when I went off to college. I started playing again almost four years ago. Cheers!
Ok, so you know what you're doing on the drums. What do you do to further your study? ...just jam, practice on your own or subscribe to something like Drumeo, Mike's Lessons, Orland Drummer, etc.. if I may ask
@@DrumTipTuesday I transcribe and learn from great drummers. Some I have been studying right now are Larnell Lewis, Eric Moore and Aikira Jimbo. In addition to this I have been studying Afro-Cuban and Latin rythims and how to use them in improvisation. Mostly use UA-cam videos and books for information.
Thanks, that was helpful. What would be even cooler is if at the end of the video show a few measures of the same groove, but demonstrating fitting that in with fills or variations of the voicing.
What a great lesson! I just drop out here on your channel. And i couldn't be happier. That's the exactly kind of drums content i'm looking for. Guess what? I've found it! Cheers man! You have a great teaching methodology and didactics. And oh, one question. Why do you mount your 10' tom on the right side? I've seen another drummer using this configuration as well. His name is Bruno Valverde! Again, amazing lesson! Can't wait for more!
Thank you for the question! I'll make a video on this, because it's a long explanation, but in the mean time, the simple answer is that I am actually playing a five piece kit, one mounted two floor. The smaller 8" tom and the 12" tom that is positioned kind of like a floor tom on the other side are additives. I got a good deal on a used 7 piece kit that even included a matching snare drum and decided to include all these drums without changing my usual set up. I liked it and decided to keep it that way for a while.
It's probably the loudest practice pad there is, which kind of defeats the purpose, lol, but it's great for these videos. And here it is www.sticksandpads.com/
Thank You for the Great Video I enjoyed it. I had big and painful Incident in my life 4 years ago ,I haven't played drums for 4 years and afraid too, Last time I tried to play I couldn't hang on to the sticks. I felt that my soul was crushed like I was Brocken. I just Build a Professional Studio for rehearsing. With Concert Quality Sound System Set up The Drums and Afraid to pick up the Sticks, I'm Terrified that the same thing will happen just like when I tried The Last Time
I can't begin to image what you go through. The only thing I can offer here is just to remind you (I'm sure you already know) and everyone who reads this that the music is in our heads and hearts and not so much in our hands. You can always contribute in some way if not directly as a performer. Having said that, and I hope I'm not over stepping or offending you but, try again. What ever you can get out of the drum you gotta try. I wish you the best in this and all endeavors.
I did have that video on this channel for a while but eventually put that video and all videos like it in the members area of DrumTipTuesday.com I put one out there about once a week in a section called "Practice Journal" that contains the things that I work on in my personal practice. I've done this for the people who want to study more with me and so I reserve some things for them. Thank you for following me here on UA-cam.
Drummer of about 20 years here. After spending my entire life with a father that plays, I decided to pick it up in high school. Never got lessons. Never played with other musicians until my late 20's. Purely self-taught and really just learned from playing along with songs I enjoy listening to. I started getting semi-serious with ACTUAL learning about 6 years ago. I'm finding it difficult to learn things like this from various UA-cam videos. Maybe it's just limited practice time or me just sucking? Probably both. I think of myself as a pocket journeyman drummer; reliable but not outstanding. Another great video though. Appreciate the content.
You're right, it can be hard to learn from the randomness of UA-cam. The good news is that for a reasonable cost you can subscribe to one drum teachers website so they can put you on a "one concept at a time" way of moving forward. Oh my I’m OLD!!! I’ve been playing 26 years! I SHOULD BE a lot better but a short career with the Marine Corps and a traumatic brain injury sorta set me back. 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you for your contribution to this feed. I watched one of your vids, your timing is great, it's a challenge to try to play to a metronome that's not "in ear" with acoustic drums.
40 years. Took 10 off. When I stop learning I stop progressing. The fun is the journey of development and refining skills. Water that is not in motion gets stale.
It's good to recognize and give thanks to the fact that no matter what we do, we stand on the shoulders of giants. I offer some historical context to the videos where I can without getting side tracked and I did an entire 40 video series to the Rudiments of drumming. I find that when I talk too long about that (and by "long" I mean 20 seconds) most people tune out and my video tanks. I truly believe that is the reason we see most online creators leaving this out. Having said that I will mention here that I was taught by a great man. Dr. Gary Olmstead was the president of the Percussive Arts Society for five years and established the Pennsylvania chapter of the P.A.S. Also I was a member of the Star of Indiana drum and bugle corps in 1993. This was a pivotal year in the history of drum corp and I was lucky enough to have been a part of it. @@mattnieri1202
You know, you are right, now it's your turn. Transcribe one of your favorite licks, record yourself playing and teaching it and post the link in this feed so we can all see how it's done@@mattnieri1202
It was a very unique thing I got to do. I was in the front ensemble playing timpani, vibraphone marimba etc.. but I ended up marching most of the show on the field playing something Tom Hannum called "flubs" or tenor drums tuned like drum set toms.@@mattnieri1202
No problem it's all good. It's just hard to infer someone's meaning in a comment when you can't hear there voice and sometimes I get some comments that are rude. But we're good. I appreciate your contributions in the comment section. @@mattnieri1202
I know, but I really wanted to stay focused on the groove. I find that unless the title of the video says something like"Chops" and I chop out a little, those videos don't do as well. People tune out because they're just there fo the groove I guess. lol
You have both...groove and chops. Just wish I had more chops after all these years. The groove keeps we working though. 😊 Really enjoying your channel!
You're a bit off the click at multiple instances in this lesson. This is still an amazingly useful groove and you're a great drummer, but when I was trying to follow along to the video, you were a bit off click multiple times. Which makes it really hard to follow along and copy you.
I've been playing for a little over a year. I'm trying to consume as much useful drum knowledge as I can. Thanks for posting, very helpful vid.

27 years. Wow I should be better than I am. lol
A long time...good groove, but no chops! 😂
Really enjoying your channel!
I doubt that anyone will use it in a playing situation.
Who knows but great practice tho
You're a bit off the click at multiple instances in this lesson. This is still an amazingly useful groove and you're a great drummer, but when I was trying to follow along to the video, you were a bit off click multiple times. Which makes it really hard to follow along and copy you.
Well, at least it was useful and free, lol, I'll keep try'n to do better
