For those curious the honeycomb carrier in the beginning has a total of 516 drones. Assuming the bottom is the same as the top. I counted 129 on one top half.

524, actually. Plus it have a reserve of 30 drones, bringing the total amount to 554. Still, usually less than 20% returns after the combat encounter.

In other news, a new generation of paper clip assemblers have been created and are being used now to reduce the chance of pirates and natural dangers and outside interference. Paper clip outputs are suspected to go up 150% by the end of consuming a star system compared to the previous generation.

I counted somewhere between 120 to 125 drones on one section. There are 4 sections so it's safe to assume there's around 480 to 500 drones on that ship that were released.
And that doesn't take into account if each drone pod has a second or even third drone hidden underneath. So there could be 960-1000 or even 1440-1500 drones. This would be such a useful and valuable ship in a traditional sci-fi navy.

One point about drones is the aspect of political stability. For a democratic society with no existential external threats drones might represent an unacceptable concentration of power to be completely at the control of a very small set of specialised individuals. The number of people necessary to ensure a military coup would be very small and as such the ease of one higher.

I think the real problem with drone warfare is it makes warfare extremely impersonal. It's a lot easier to send a robot off to kill somebody that you never have to see than it is to look at somebody down a scope and pull the trigger with your own finger. This could make killing civilians or surrendering enemies a lot more palatable to the people who command the drones, and make them less likely to refuse orders from the higher-ups telling them to ignore the rules of warfare.

    • @Kirhean
      @Kirhean 6 років тому +5

This may not be as true as people tend to think. There is some research going into reported PTSD cases among drone operators, and it would appear that drone usage isn't the detached experience we thought it would be.

I think it may be possible that space warships will be modular, something like 100 Abram tanks glued together. You would have various modules that can be hooked together depending on your preference. Such modules would include:
    - Big gun modules
    - Launching modules
    - Point defense modules
    - Propulsion modules
    - Reserve ammunition modules
    - Special modules, such as communication, crew, etc. There are dozens of possibilities, as well as one of a kind specially built module for a specific mission or owned by a rich person.
These would be hooked up like the internet, communication would always be rerouted in case of damage.
Ideally, they would have tracks and rails so they could adjust position reconfigure the ship and/or split up and recombine on the move.
You could sail into a system with a 1000 module ship and the captain can tell an away team to, "Take a level 1 survey ship to that moon," with a level survey. You start with 1 propulsion unit and add until you get what you want.
Think of it sort of like an armored train from WW1 without the limitations of gravity and tracks.

      That's interesting.
How did the drones get there?
Was it an ancient war between interstellar powers (In system or out of system.) with the story's setting system being the home of the losing side, drone rebellion/malfunction causing them to turn against their creators, or has so much time past the creator species of these drones regressed due to some unknown cataclysm/went extinct and a new species evolved to take its place but since the technology is so different it doesn't recognize the reemerging/ new species as non hostile and attack the unknown craft.

The central controller further back is the Robot Master, isolated in its bunker when on defense, telling them how to do their tasks. Local control is a Reploid with human-level AI and vastly more durability, who might be overseeing several Robot Masters, but is still expendable, telling them which tasks to do.

Well you would know what they all are if you knew the first rule of warfare.

One of the most famous military sf series, of course, is Keith Laumer's (later many other people) Bolos of the Dinochrome Brigade -- essentially big, smart robot tanks.

Isaac, you may not remember me but I contracted cancer several moths ago. I wrote a comment about it in your Carl Sagan tribute video. As it happens I have the exact same cancer that recently killed John McCain. I'm, obviously, doing way better than he. Just wanted to let you know I'm still a faithful viewer of your show and, even though every other Arthursday is chemo day for me, I always rush home to catch your latest episode. I can't thank you enough for the work you do.

I do, though more for the thumbnail I hate to admit, "White Castle" is one of my favorite paintings. I'm very glad to hear you're still hanging in there, rough times, and am glad to hear the episodes are helping a little during the ordeal.

The lore of the drones in Eve Online always fascinated me, it's a pretty good story on its own and that kind of thing peaks my interest for some reason.

That game Hades 9 looks bomb as shit. I have wanted a game similar to that for over a decade. I hope it turns out well. With Isaac involved, hopefully he can steer them away from too many bad mistakes.

I guess it kind of depends on 'mistakes', we decided early on we wanted to keep things tight but would have to sacrifice here and there to necessary gameplay, e.g. the ships have to be close to each other on the screen so rather than handwaving it, we outright go with 'you are seeing what the admiral sees, and his display is altered to make it easier for him to see for the same reasons games/shows do that.

complicated IFF being a disadvantage in battle presupposes that your enegagement range tends to exceed your detection range, otherwise you could categorize the targets in advance and then know exactly what you want to engage with before the fight has started

Thanks for another thoughtful episode; that was a good survey of some options, except for this quick smartass blind spot on the whole drone fleet idea:
"Go ahead and launch your drone armada. You might as well just be throwing all your money and minerals at me to recycle for myself. I'll be sitting back here with a salvage crew and a super-capacitor bank, charging our great... big... E... M... P..."
Looking forward to the Neptune episode. At least that planet serves a good purpose out there, helping keep the Kuiper belt etc from going too chaotic and raining down on the inner solar system. Triton, however, looks to me like a big ol' ball of resource in nitrogen ices etc we can use to terraform other habitats, even Mars. It's on my list of "take a picture now if you want one" things in the solar system. Of course, I also consider everything about Uranus to be disposable, so that's a much huger chunk of good uses just waiting to happen.

All the drones have to do to avoid EMPs is not be too close together.
