  • In todays lesson I cover one of the biggest mistakes I see with beginner to intermediate level players, which is a lack of early preparation, which leads to poor timing and holds players back from progressing in the game.
The major factor behind this is poor ball recognition and receiving skills. Not being able to set up your body, racket and feet in the best position for success on the shot.
In this video I give you my best drills to improve your ball recognition and movement that will get you sending the ball back better than ever have before and we won't even focus on how to swing the racket.

Highly useful. Reading the ball correctly is essential for good footwork and ball striking. When I am in the wrong position to strike the ball correctly, my footwork has been suboptimal, but the underlying cause of both is that I have failed to read the ball and track it sufficiently well to prepare early enough. Very pertinent to my own play!

Thanks for the comment @nickherbert2591 glad you found this useful. Great observation about your own game. It's amazing how often you can trace back the root cause of errors to poor ball recognition and preparation but rec players then want to blame intricacies in their technique or not having an ATP forehand etc but in reality we might just need to be more ready 👍

Amazing lesson Coach Patrick! appreciate you making these videos and sharing your thoughts and knowledge 🙏 it's refreshing to hear a tennis coach saying there are no shortcuts! Tennis is the only sport in the world were people write " learn tennis in 2 minutes" type books although I have a copy haha 😅 thanks again! Great teaching!

My pleasure @nathanmiller6051 glad you enjoyed it and appreciate you watching and to the end. 😂 I'm sure I've probably said these things as well but in reality if it was as easy as being told once and just understand the theory we would all be on the tour and there is a reason the pros still put in the hours every day on the practice court. But all we can do is work on the correct things to maximise our own ability and get the most out of this great game 🎾

Hey @markbild2366 if you have read and tracked the ball properly up to the point the ball has bounced you may be misjudging the spin, flight and penertration on the ball as these will all influence how the ball reacts off the court and affect your timing. As I mentioned in the video there is no shortcut to improving this but to study your opponent at contact and see more shots by putting in the reps on the practice court but best of luck, you will get there 💪
