1961 Tonka Mobile Clam Restoration * 60th Anniversary *

- I found this 1961 Tonka Mobile Clam on Facebook Marketplace for $40. It was missing the upper crank, and windshield, but was in pretty much all there otherwise. The turret mechanism gets very loose on these and I wanted to remedy that. I love how it turned out! Special thanks to Mark for hooking me up with the missing crank!

Superb restoration. The automated hands-free clam bucket is a brilliant design.
Many thanks!
To add to the reply chain, I guess I'm a railway modeler who likes his kit weathered, whereas you're returning old treasures to mint condition. It's great looking at stuff from both angles and I can just see several seven year old's I've worked with over the years gazing in covetous awe at your handiwork. good 'ealth, mate. John W
Thanks John.
Cool restoration on a old clamshell bucket crain
Thanks Justin.
Oh doesn't this bring back memories, the many hours being my own construction company boss at 5 years of age. Relocating my dad's sand pile he had purchased for making mirror, and the brick job he and grand pop was doing to the house. What great memories. Thank you!
Thank you for that story. I love to hear about the memories that these restorations stir up!
Even as an adult, it looked like great fun loading the dump truck at the end of the video. I was happy to see the toy fulfilling its intended purpose.
Applause!!!! Standing ovation!
Very nicely done. I love seeing the tired old toy becoming vibrant and usable again.
Thank you very much!
What an I say........absolutely magnificent!!!!!!! I love those rivets, so much more professional looking than pop rivets. Keep up the great work.
Thank you very much! I love that it can look factory correct.
Absolutely Beautiful Restoration job. Love that color use to have a dodge pickup truck that was orange.
Absolutely a fabulous job looks great thanks for sharing. Love the clamp you have made to would love to no how you made that. Can't wait for next one
Thanks Colin!
Very nice, looks great! As always, very enjoyable video! What do you do wth them upon completion? Collector? Maybe some day a view of your stock! Thanks for the entertainment!
WOW! Beautiful restoration! 😲
Thank you very much!
Awesome restauration again! Perfect!
Thanks again!
That was a beautiful restoration - Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I had one that was a later model. 1964 vintage. It was yellow. Had lots of fun with that. Sorry I gave it away. Great job at restoration.
Thanks Ken. The memories cannot be taken away!
@@RepairRestore Only if If get altzheimer's disease. BTW, are replacement / repro parts for Tonka trucks available? I noticed you used a replacement windshield. I fix and repair my American Flyer trains. There are repro parts and replacements for both Flyer, Marx, and Lionel.
Very cool
I have the full crane with tracks instead of wheels from the 60s 👍
Awesome. I am wanting to make a custom tracked Tonka Electro magnetic crane soon.
Вот это игрушки,настоящие с душой!Жаль в детстве таких не было!Очень качественная работа,класс!👍👍👍
Спасибо
How about making some of those tonka twin screw triangles to have on hand . I've seen some other trucks that you have restored that really deserve to be twin screw. Like that high side steak rake farm truck .
Perfect! I’ll take two!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
That would be a lot of work!😂
Wow the clamshell looks good in chrome
Thank you. The clamshell that I had was from the wrong year. 1961 clams were chromed. I looked through the Tonka LookBooks that are online to get the details right. I am glad you liked it. I agree that Tonka hit the nail on the head with this one!
Beautiful restoration
Thank you very much!
Just gorgeous! Especially nice was the chrome on the clamshell. But excellent in every way!
Thank you very much!
BEAUTIFUL! One of your very best efforts to date. Looks like brand new.
Thank you very much!
Came out awesome!!!
Thanks 👍😀
I see you put a short version of the restoration up. But, to hell with the short version, I had to see the whole kit and kaboodle!
Another job well done, as usual👍!
Thanks CJ. I also would not want the short version, but I wanted a few to have that option. I appreciate your desire to see all the details. I am toying with the idea of doing a multi part series on a project I have coming up so that I can put in more of the details, upload more often, and not have the video becoming prohibitively long. Curious if that sounds interesting.
@@RepairRestore, sounds good!
This restauration is nothing less than a work of art. Reminds me of a crane on threads I had back in 1969-70.
Thank you. I have an idea and some bits and pieces from old toys that I am working through the planning stage that will involve treads!
I wonder if that pivot point under the clam body would last longer and where less of there were a little lithium grease under the pivot
Great restoration. Job well done. 😊♥
Thank you! 😊
Brilliant work first class mate..
Thanks Paul.
Amigo estupenda restauracion por usted lograda en esta Mobile Clam * 60 Aniversario * de Tonka, mis felicitaciones y respetos desde Venezuela💯👍💯👊🤘
Muchas gracias
AWESOME RESTORATION! Well Done Mate!
Many thanks!
És caminhão vai ficar muito bonito parabéns 👏 para você mesmo
Well done!
I appreciate that. Thanks.

Wow! Soooooooo much parts!!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Man I cant imagine how much time this took, when I restored the Tonka Ramp host it felt like alot, but this seems to be evem more!!!! Keep up the good work!!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It definitely was a lot of parts, but it went together fairly quickly. Thanks for watching!
That looks great! Awesome job!! 👍😁
Thank you! 😁
Absolutely love these restorations. Superb workmanship and it's great to see these splendid old monsters coming back to life. One mild comment only, what about a matt finish rather than gloss, in keeping with such workhorses. John Warner, Murrumbateman NSW Australia
Thanks John. These originally did not have a matte finish and I was hoping for a more original look. I know that they originally were not powder coated either, but we all have to give somewhere.😀 I live in Michigan and some of the Road Commission trucks paint the hoods Matte Black to cut down on glare.
Fantastic! Love the large semi-tubular rivet clamp, is it homemade?
A friend of mine is a machinist and he was able to make it for me to my specifications.
It had some well played with, miles on it. Great save !
Thank you. It was ready for some attention!
Nice work! This came out perfect!
Thank you! Cheers!
PERFECT &SHARP ALSO LOOKS very LIKE JUST ROLL OFF ASSEMBLY LINE OF TONKA TOYS & BEYOND SUPER🤜🤛👍👊✊💪👌😀 ALSO TOTALLY AWESOME ALSO EXCELLENT 👍👍👌🖐️😬🤠
Thanks 👍
Super job! Hope you can get the whole highway set!
That would be cool. I don't have a certain thing that I search for, but I would not pass up a Big Mike that was in bad shape so I could restore it!
Really nice restoration....I'm surprised you avoided the temptation to fabricate and install stablizer arms! Best wishes and good health my friend.
Hi Dr. Skip. The stabilizer arms are on the rear bumper. When they are flipped out it lifts the rear wheels off of the ground. They were stock and I didn't feel it needed front ones. Hope you are well.
@@RepairRestore I didn't even notice them....I was just making a little joke! Who knew? Take care of yourself.
For what it’s worth, they’re called outriggers not stabilizer arms. Not trying to be a smart a** just trying to educate. Cheers!
@@10947792 In America, they are also known as "stablizers".....alas...."England and America are two countries separated by a common language" (G.B.Shaw) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@dr.skipkazarian5556 Didn't know that....always heard them referred to as out riggers. thanks for teaching me something new!
Everything that you have restored has turned out to be amazing, well done to you and the kids in the photo looks handsome is he yours child
Thank you very much. That is me as a child.
All those metal shavings I keep thinking finger and eye splinters!
I have definitely had my share of those! Not fun!
Beautiful job! I have one of these to restore and may try your trick with the nut to prevent the wobbling.
Where did you get the new stickers from? I can't find any with the trapezoid "mobile clam" like that, which is correct for mine too, just the rectangle ones that say "Tonka mobile clam"
I had to buy the rectangle ones and cut them down. I had the same problem.
@@RepairRestore I was also thinking of doing that, I'm glad it looks good, I'll have to do that too.
@@RepairRestore one more question for you, what size and where did you get the acorn nuts that hold on the cranks?
@@JoslinModels I got them at Home Depot. I think that they are 5/32".
Good my friend 🌺🌺❤❤
Thank you very much!
Cool.
👍👍
Nice job👍😎
Thanks 👍
Two fish are sitting in a tank, one looks over to the other and says 'Hey, you know how to drive this thing?'
Right on!👍
Nice job. Where did you get the riveter from? Or is that something that you fabricated? I and many others would love to learn more about that.
That is something that I came up with and a friend of mine who is a machinist made it for me.
@@RepairRestore I bet there would be a lot of interest in that
When you drilled out the rivets on the control cap for the clam shell then took it apart why didn't you powder coat it before you put new rivets in
What happens to all your sandblasting material after you use it?
It just falls back into the bottom of the sandblasting cabinet to be sucked back up and reused. The material that I have in there right now is getting pretty old and should be replaced soon though.
Where did you find replacement parts?
I get them from Gasoline alley toys, eBay, and Facebook forums.
çok güzel iş
çok teşekkür ederim
Mirá este canal CHIP CHANNEL RESTORATIONS solo TONKA, te faltó algunas cosas por pulir y pintar. pero te quedó bien igual. Abrazo...
Disfruto mucho Chip Channel.
Where you find the label's...
Wonderful. Thanks a lot. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Ficou do caralho, mano
Thanks for watching!
You can you this to fill your coffee machine with fine grounds.
Just what my aero press needs!
Any state road dept would most likely want it to show what they used back in the day
It is cool to get a peak into the past by working on those toys contemporary to that time period!
I had one that was yellow, when my brothers boys destroyed it.
That is a bummer!
Question why use a hammer designed for wood working instead of a 8 to 10 ounce ball peen.
I'm guessing the downvotes are from those that like the patina?
That is a distinct possibility. Their was nothing cool about the "before" in my opinion though!
Restoring an old Tonka is deleting its history. With new color and stickers it has no real value for me as a collector. Replacing the ropes and fixing non working parts is ok. The patina and rust makes it wonderful. Restoring old toys with new color etc is a NO-GO!!!
Es tut mir leid, dass es Ihnen nicht gefallen hat. Danke fürs zuschauen.
