Maiden Voyage for my Pelican Catch PWR 100. Honest opinion

- My sincere overall opinion is that I really do love the kayak. However if you have never fished from a kayak you should not expect this (or any) kayak to perform like a boat when standing to fish.
Also expect to load your gear onto the yak after you have put it in the water, if you have no help lifting. It can be heavy with battery, trolling motor, and other gear.
My plan is to look for an affordable trailer so I can leave all the gear in place.
Hi Ed, I also kayak fish and use a 11.5 feel free kayak with the 55lb thrust motor that i use on the side on a bracket. My biggest suggestion to you would be to get a lithium battery, a bit costly but much lighter and well worth the investment. I being 64 years 5'11" 275 pounds myself like to travel as light as possible. my kayak holds 400lbs. and of course a good paddle is number 2 on my list. Just added the power pole this week also. Good luck my friend.
Thank you!
Yeah my battery is heavy. Now that I have a dedicated trainer it’s not as bad. When this battery croaks I’ll probably go lithium:)
Hi Ed, I agree it isn't the lightest kayak on the market. The Pelican wheels do help. I put a Newport Vessels 55lb thrust kayak series motor on mine. I find the shorter profile of the Newport Vessels kayak series more comfortable to operate then a standard troller.
I have the same TM on order and will be here this week. Maybe that will help:)
Get a Honda 2.3hp. They stop making them a few yrs ago. They are air cooled so no impeller to change. They weight less than that battery.
I've got a lure 11.5 and run a 55 lb minn kota in the sonar pod port. Yak gadget makes a drop in mount. Use a beaver tail rudder system from feel free. 55 lb thrust head is same size as 40 lb.
Hey Ed new here, just got one. I'm got a couple videos of yours to see. I did a rope front also
Quick question just because I had my mind set in this kayak but then someone told me they’ve had it since it came out and they wish they would have bought the Johnny bass100 because the catch 100 is thin plastic and deformed from is ladder rack so I assumed he overtightened it down. Then he also said everything is riveted down but it’s all loose?
I can’t compare the Johnny Bass Boat as a be never been in or even seen one. I own a Pelican Bass Raider 10e also. And I have drilled through its hull to install a scupper drain. The top layer is about 1/16” and the bottom layer is about 1/8” thick so I’m assuming the kayak is the same thickness. Like anything you have to take care of it and be careful with how you transport and store it. I would recommend padding when transporting. I have had no issues with my Pelican products and would purchase them again.
Good Vid, im still debating the yak or some sort of small boat.. Subbed!
I've concluded that, if possible, get a yak and a small boat. There are times when you'll need both. lol
Have you put a fish finder on it? I’ve got one and I’m trying to figure out where to put it.
Not yet but my Scotty mount for the transducer is on back order so I will soon. Thinking about putting the transducer on back right behind rod holders and the screen just off to my right as I sit. Let me know what you decide:)
I believe there is a recession underneath that pairs with one of the scuppers for a transducer
Don’t understand the C rating for unloading. I’m 5’6” and 68 years old and have no trouble loading or unloading the Power 100. However I don’t try to load or unload the kayak if it is fully loaded; that would not be very wise.
I could have done a better job explaining my reasoning. I just need to get a trailer because I get tired of unpacking and repacking the kayak every time I launch and reload. However the kayak as a whole I give an A+ rating I love it especially now that I have added the 55 pound thrust trolling motor and the bull nose Rudder to help with tracking. Thanks for watching
the C rating for truck bed.. lol.. i am 54 ... and I car top my jonny bass 100.. 80lbs unloaded.:) might want a stand up bar like hobie sells.
I bought a trailer. Lol. “Lol” is right. I should have known better. 😂
Why on gods green earth would you load and unload a kayak that is loaded with all your gear including a battery and trolling motor. Work smarter not harder.
LOL. Exactly!
What kind of runtime do you expect out of your battery and motor setup?
30lb MinnKota and Brand new 109AH Everstart Marine Battery that I picked up from Walmart. Only had it out once so far. From what I’ve heard it should last up to four hrs or more since I mainly use the TM for positioning while Bass fishing. I’ll probably run the TM on level 5 for only 10 minutes or less each trip.
Awesome, thanks
I recently had it on the water on two separate fishing trips. After 3+ hrs each day I still had max power when heading back to the ramp.
Go Red Sox!!!
You like to complaint alot dude!...
I guess you’re right. 😂
I liked your review! My PWR 100 arrives tomorrow and I can't wait. Got the Newport Vessel 55lb trolling motor. I think I want to get an anchor wizard and mount it on the track. Also, I think I'd like to get a fish finder for it. Would like to hear about how that fin for your trolling motor works. I did see this video about rigging a steering system, but it's not a step by step and doesn't look all that great. Not knocking the engineering, though. Better than I could do. ua-cam.com/video/IX7oDbHgWJ8/v-deo.html
Thank you. I have that same motor in my Amazon cart. Wanted to see how the 30 performed first. Probably gonna go ahead and get it. I will update and show how the fin works too. Saw some good steering mod videos. That’s a must for me. Will check out the link you sent too. We are away in South Dakota right now. Be a few weeks before I get to play around with my yak. 😂
Btw, the Bullnose Rudder works great! I Recommend it.
@@outdoorswithedsometimesg yeah, I got mine too and used it Sat and really liked it.
For a 10 footer is definitely stable
Yes! For a 10’ yak!:)
