Shane Fell was an interesting one, booted 5 there at full forward and helped get the Swannies up on the last kick at Princes Park. Looked like a real find. Was recruited from the Tasmanian Football League over that Summer after kicking 114 for Glenorchy in 1989. Exactly 12 months after this match he was back lining up for Glenorchy against North Hobart at KGV, and ended up booting 73 goals for that season.
This was the very first round of the AFL. SPOILER - Geelong led by a point early in the 3rd qr but ended up losing by 115pts (yes really a 20 goal turnaround in a half). Also Carl led Syd by 45 pts at half time having not lost to the Swans at the ground for 25 years- I won't spoil the ending but it is amazing !!
@@fieldregister2427 They were indeed. Much higher scoring, faster man on man strength and just plain better. The next time someone gives u s@%& for saying the past was better just ask them is any current Italian painter better than DaVinci or Michelangelo? Any English scriptwriter better than Shakespeare? Any German composer today better than Beethoven ? Yes - sometimes the past is way better!!
@@johnclifford1537 I like your comparison. Of course we know a current team would thrash a team from the past, but the key is about aesthetics. The game was like a work of art back then. It is pretty ugly now
@@samueljonis434 Samuel yes I would put it this way - The Roman Empire won victories from Britain to the Middle East but a modern army would slaughter them with today's weaponry it does not mean however that modern soldiers are better. So it is with footy.
I was at this game as I have been all my life following the great Hawthorn football club!!!!

I loved when the vfl always started the season with a grand final rematch in round 1.
