As a meditator for 35 years, the constant repetition of the phrase “nothing is gonna change my world” can be interpreted to be a quality of everybody’s soul, which is pure unconditional love, joy and wisdom that is allowed to express fully and freely once freed of the common thoughts that haunt the mind. John Lennon here is declaring, I am living in the unchangeable and permanent loving joyful wisdom of my soul.

Humans seem to have an attraction for repeating things. From chants in an ashram to a rosary. From songs on a chain gang to cries of revolution at a rally. As an observer, it can have a hypnotizing, white noise effect. As a participant, it's purpose is compliance. A more physical example is the "goose step" march. IMHO, "nothing's gonna change my world" is an admission that whether it's a good studio session, a chemically based party or endless repetitions of an authorized magical set of words, he's still going to be John.

Your explanation on The Beatles through John Lennon's insight intuition point of view, and the way he was irritated by a song which showed up in his mind and years to the point he had to write it down on the paper and turn into one of the most beautiful songs ever written was fantastic!
It's a mantra with meditation floating across the universe through inspiring words sung ad libitum on and on and on until it materializes in John Lennon's life,my life, our life.
Jai Guru Deva meaning Glory To The Divine Master which is a clear homage to Our Creator,is the highlight of the song along with the love floating with around and surrounding him as millions shining suns...Really amazing!
I've got my own mantra I say it and think as a meditation,as well, and I believe it will very so much soon will materialize in all areas of my life:
Deus,de a Tua ultima palavra imediatamente em todas as areas da minha vida plenamente.
    Translating:
God,give to me Your last word immediately in all areas of my life entirely.

I had written poetry quite often and I listened to some of the Beatles' music in my teens (Abbey Road was my first of their albums), but when I heard Across the Universe for the first time I remember pretty much standing mouth agape, astounded at the beautiful lyrics. I still love the song, and what makes it better is how John wrote it. I've had that inspiration for only one or two poems, where I was in bed and the words were flowing as if dictated to me and I was rushing to write them down as fast as I "heard" them. If only I had a fraction of the Beatles' talent though. Anyway, Let It Be wasn't the best album they produced yet it still contains some great music. Even at their "worst" (the fragmented white album as well as the incomplete Let It Be album) they were far superior to most other groups.

@RATTLEY67 excellent point! She said She Said is also on there within that theme. The meditative/spiritual aspect really doesn't begin to really take shape until White Album, though. George definitely dives in on Pepper, but John and Paul start to hit the real philosophical/zen-type of messaging with White Ablum. Love it all, though.

Interesting. John wrote Dear Prudence for Prudence Farrow because he didn't want to spend a lot of time meditating, and certainly not as much time on it as Miss Farrow. Sexy Sadie was written as a damning condemnation of the Maharishi. It would have been more damning but George specifically asked John to not be so harsh. Still, it's a nice song.

    • @Longwinger
      @Longwinger 4 місяці тому +1

John was having episodes or paranoia then. Their new manager was wanting them back in the recording studio making money for him. Magic Alex started rumors of Maharishi coming on to Mia Farrow. John believed it and thought Maharishi was scamming them. Later, he apologized (sent George to represent him). Later John was seen many times in New York's TM center having his meditation checked.

I believe John did explain in an interview that he just came home from a long day at the studio and his ( first wife ) was complaining about something all night long. He didn’t understand what she talked about. Why she didn’t stop.
It go on and on … in the end he couldn’t sleep, he then went downstairs to his basement and started to write
“Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind
    Possessing and caressing me
    Jai guru deva, om
Nothing's gonna change my world. “
In one of the Beatles documentaries. When they were rehearsing, after he sings “ Nothing gonna change my world.” Then he added “I Fu@king wish it does “
The Rest is in history. Now we understand how his first marriage life was like.

Being a Born again Christian I don't believe in TM, but I have so much to say of this song. The Bible is an Eastern Book, ways that men of the east thought. We westernized it. While I don't believe in TM, the Bible does state.. You (God). Will keep in perfect peace (Shal-om) who's mind is stayed on thee.. (Meditating on God, His Word, The things of God). Many prophets of God wrote the Bible like this. Sometimes they called it The Burden of the Lord, it had to get out. They used their own style, their environments, experiences and knowledge in expressing it. So did John. John did not write this after TM, but the end of the day, maybe reflection on the day. I read somewhere in was arguing with Cynthia... . This was song of Incredible Peace, Joy and to experience the incredible amazing beauty of God and Heaven. Someday we disconnect from this world totally, and become Residents of another place. Heaven if make it, by making Jesus lord, He paid the price of admission, his sacrifice. To me this was a glimpse of heaven to John, Incredible Joy, peace, love, laughter.. For John. Very touching song. And also for those who heard it. Sure God knew the reach of the Beatles... What Graciousness and Love.❤. Beautiful, just Beautiful.

I think that the means of meditation matter not as long as the focus is God. And I agree with you that he had glimpse of Heaven.

I'm a Christian also, Baptized in 1963 but Ive also practiced TM since 1970. TM is not a religion nor denies any religion. It is a spiritual practice just as fasting is a spiritual practice. It is the truest way to repent. The word repent means to *turn back, turn around*. TM turns the mind, inwardly, to go back to the source which is pure awareness, pure spirit and perfect peace. The meditator experiences himself, experiencing himself. I AM. Jesus told us he is the Great I Am. We are little I Am's, created in his image. Those that experience that are Children of God.

He was very spiritual (he called it "cosmic") at the time of writing this, and he continued to do meditation even after the song "God". He also believed in and practiced numerology very closely until the day he died. I think that song where he says he doesn't believe in anything was just what he thought for a very short period in his life.

@maliamarsh197 respectfully, I think you're projecting your own beliefs onto John. It's well documented that he followed numerology closely until the literal day he died. In fact, he and Yoko would check an I-Ching chart before leaving the house to gauge whether it was safe or not... and he says, "I don't believe in I-Ching" in the song "God", too. But he clearly did. This is all documented in authorized biographies of John and stated plainly by those who knew him closest in countless interviews that are all available on this very platform.
Here's a quote from John himself:
"I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man. in the sky. I believe that what people call God is. something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong."

Bollox. It's a pop song. Lennon is at his specialism of bamboozling anyone listening carefully. Pop music at its best is a catchy tune with necessarily suggestive lyrics ... clouds that float by...without ever attempting to focus on them...says the guru.
