    Envy is me. Do treasure it! And here's hoping you do NOT assault your new Space Quest boxes the way you have with your old ones! 😉

    Awesome! I've never had any of the Sierra games in boxed copies and would love to have some myself. You should cherish them. Will you be placing them in a special display case?

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  5 років тому +2

      I will indeed cherish them! I don't have a display case, but I will somehow get them on the shelf in my background, so they'll be prominently displayed in all my videos from now on.

    The success/points sound effect when you picked up the box was a great touch.

    When the scissors broke it reminded me of a Space Quest puzzle fail (or adventure game puzzle fail in general) where you get a cute fail animation to show the player the seemingly obvious solution is incorrect! Also, nice touch adding the points SFX when you picked up the package.
    All around cool video to see. What a generous dude!

      Amazingly generous. I'm still in disbelief that these boxes are now in my house. (And I managed to fix the scissors later, off-camera.)

    I do have the original boxes of those games on my shelf, with the exception of that larger SQV box (more on that below). As to why I have the PQ3 box, it’s because I wanted boxed versions of every single one of Sierra’s boxed adventure games made after 1984. Don't worry, I don't want your other SQ5 hintbook. That's SQ1 Remake hintbook though... ;) Just kidding, of course. You now have your own SQ hintbook collection, so please treasure them. Thank you again for gifting me the amazing SQ5 hintbook, though!!!
    This video is so awesome! I love seeing unboxing videos. I've often toyed around with the idea of using my collection as a springboard for unboxing videos...in other words, unboxing various Sierra games with the intention of showing collectors what is supposed to be in each box, what to expect, etc. The only problem is I don't have the first idea how to begin to do something like that, plus I really don't have the equipment to pull it off and look nice.
    Some thoughts on your new collection: The reason why the SQ2 box is missing the comic, as well as why it seems so shoddy compared to the others is that is the Slash budget version (similar to the Kixx budget versions in Europe, but much harder to tell the difference). Sierra would sell their excess software to Slash, who would print cheaper quality versions of the materials in order for you to play through the game but not have as many quality feelies. Then again, you were paying significantly less, so I suppose you could argue you were getting your money's worth.
    Congrats on the SQ1 Remake hintbook! That's definitely one of the rarer ones! It has some really cool information inside, which I'm sure you're already aware of. Save that SQ2 hintbook packaging! It's also extremely rare to find hintbooks that still have their original packaging with them!!!
    The larger Space Quest V box is the rare Slash box. For whatever reason, Slash re-issued a few of Sierra's games in larger big boxes as opposed to the smaller slipcover/flip-top boxes. That copy of SQV is pretty rare, so even though it the "cheaper" quality, it's unique in its own right due to being a larger box, and definitely a conversation point on the collector's scene. Gir Draxon is a character from Nova 9, the sequel to Dynamix's Stellar 7 game. Considering that SQV was developed by Dynamix, the inclusion of Gir Draxon makes sense.
    Inca is a terrible game where they attempted to throw in adventure games with awful voice acting, shoddy and terribly handled space combat/arcade shooters, and a really weird and confusing plot that makes no sense to most normal people. So, in short, a typical Coktel Vision game. ;) Thanks for sharing this with us! I really enjoy unboxing videos! :)
    Looking forward to more, as always!

      Damn, you leave *epic* comments, man! I love it! :D
      I would definitely watch a channel where you went through each game box and showed off its contents. Any help you need setting that stuff up, just let me know, I'd be happy to help you out. Webcams are usually pretty terrible potato quality, but if you have a SLR camera that can shoot video, you're more than halfway there! Logitech also makes some pretty decent webcams (I use a Logitech E920) but they're probably a bit on the pricey side. At any rate, the idea is solid and I'd love to help you out.

    Wow that takes me back. The 3.5" floppy version (on Mac) of Space Quest IV was my very first Space Quest. It might have actually been the first computer game I ever owned since it took us forever to actually get a computer. :P

      @EmeraldLavigne 5 років тому +2

      I played SQ III & Secret of Monkey Island with my step-dad. And I remember getting the boxed SQ IV.
      Except I know that I definitely never had the hint book...
      =/

      The first boxed PC game I ever got was Day of the Tentacle. Before that, I think it might have been Teenage Mutant Hero (Not Ninja) Turtles for the C64.

    Shut up - don't apologize.
    This is not self-indulgent - this is *LITERALLY* the type of thing I'm subscribed to see, Troels.
    It's funny - I know we had SQ IV, and I know I remember the box, or at least maybe the picture somehow, but we did NOT have the hint book.
    At all.
    I remember getting stuck in the mall - so hard. And I remember going online & printing out pages of a walk-through... NO! It was my step-dad printed out some specific solutions from usenets or BBS or newsgroups (something like that).
    Oh wow fuck me.... Ha.
    Wow.
    I completely forgot about that!!!!
    See? Don't apologize, Troels - it wasn't self-indulgent. It was exactly why I'm subscribed!
    Thanks, Troels!

      I'm so glad to hear that. And hopefully you'll be glad to hear that, last night, I got confirmation that there will be a follow-up to this video sometime in mid-November. Yep, I'm filling out some gaps!

    "All I want is an unboxing video."
    "This box is going to be full of bees, isn't it?"
    "Do wasps count as bees?"
    "No."
    "Then no."

    • @spacequesthistorian

      Reminds me of that Black Books scene.
      "That's pizza! I was going to warm it and eat it later. That's normal. Everybody does that!"
      "And what are these?" (points inside pizza container)
      "... Wasps."

    Oh is that how to use the adventure window? I've been holding it up to my eye all this time, must be why I kept getting stuck so often in Sierra games...Sweet mother of unboxings indeed!

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  5 років тому +1

      Cut to: A shot of the two of us, looking through each of our adventure windows, at the screen, mumbling about why they used to much red color in the game.

    That makes me think of the 6-disc set I got for Christmas from LucasArts, the one that had Dark Forces, Tie Fighter, X-Wing, X-Wing vs Tie Fighter ... and I forget what else... Yoda Stories?
    Those collections were THE SHIT!

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  5 років тому

      I heard a podcast interview with Hal Barwood recently where he talked about Yoda Stories. Apparently, back then, pitching a "casual game" to a games company was an uphill battle! Oh, how those times have changed.

    That adventure of yours going to pick up the package was brilliant, also if we ever make a YAR game that scarf getup is going to be a customization option! :D

    I got the impression PQ3 was included just because of the sight gag of the cover appearing to cut through as you open the box.
    Of course, this assumes Denis (sp?) knew how you'd open it.

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  5 років тому

      He had no way of knowing how I would open it, or even if the contents of the box would shift around in transit. So I think that was just a happy coincidence.

  • @beavinator

    This is awesome. I've never seen any of the boxes for the first three games, as my first purchase was "The Space Quest Trilogy" (1992), a collection of 1 (remake only), 2 and 3. It at least included the manuals, so I had the comics. I've still got all this stuff, along with my boxed copies of 4, 5, 6, and the SQ Collector's Edition. And of course I've bought them all on GOG as well. Amazing how many times we gamers can wind up purchasing the same game, isn't it...?
    BTW, Inca is a pretty awesome game...you ought to check it out, if you can find the means.

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  5 років тому

      Yeah, it is amazing. It's so much more than just the games themselves. The games were just part (admittedly a big part) of this bigger, immersive experince you got with the whole physical product.
      I have played Inca several times. Like most Coktel Vision games, I still haven't the faintest idea what they were trying to accomplish with it. It's densely obscure, visually gorgeous, and thoroughly baffling.

    • @beavinator
      @beavinator 5 років тому

      Oh good, so you HAVE played it. Yeah it's definitely odd, but I can't help but love it. Inca 2, now THAT is baffling...
      I just borrowed a USB floppy drive from a friend so I could back up (and hopefully play), some old shit I only have on 3.5, the main one being "The Prophecy", another obscure one from Coktel which I loved back in the day.

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  5 років тому

      I've played "Ween: The Prophecy," too! It's ... certainly not *less* weird. 😅 Coktel Vision made some fascinating games, though, I have to give them that. When I was a kid, the idea of digitized actors in computer games (before CD-ROMs and FMV games were a thing) was totally enthralling to me. And Coktel Vision did a lot of really cutting edge pioneering stuff with digitized graphics. I used to watch the rolling demo for Lost In Time over and over again and be amazed that there were *real people* in the game.
