Shipping containers are made out of a type of metal called corten steel. Corten steel is highly resistant to corrosion. If you give the container a good washing when you get it to get the salt residue off of it from being shipped across the sea for so many years your container should last you a long long time even if you don't paint it. Corten steel would take a lifetime almost to rust through. This steel is made to not have to be painted. It's used in architectural structures to give the rust like appearance and provide low maintenance. The way it works is when it's exposed to moisture and oxygen and the outside elements it creates a surface rust coating which seals the steel preventing it from further rusting. It will of course slowly rust overtime however it is not your typical type of rusting as it takes much much longer for it to rest because it does not behave like your traditional mild steel. Thought this would be some good information to put out there to inform of some of you guys who aren't aware of how it works the characteristics it has and the fact that you really don't need to paint it however painting it can definitely extend its life even further although in most cases you probably be dead before it's deteriorated enough that you have to do something about it. A container sure does look much better when it's painted with a fresh coat of paint that's for sure.
Well explained and correct you can normally tell when a yard hasn't used cotton to repair the boxes usually it's only the roof and side panels and door panels that are corten
I have an XR9 and LOVE IT. I think that thing will spray molasses ! I don't have the wand... but need to get one. Don't be scared to run oil base through your sprayer. Buy an oil base tip. It will flow through it just like latex... no probs. Just have to clean with thinner instead of water, but not too hard to do. Need to get me a shipping container too. Good job, alan
Thanks for the words of wisdom. I was a little reluctant to spray oil based paint through the machine after a bad experience with some epoxy paint some years ago with an air driven paint sprayer. I value your advice and will give it a go on a future project!
Graco can handle it, I have a 35+ Y/O Graco 480 industrial unit that would spray poly, epoxies and the paste you mixed to line vessels with.. Just keep the filter and other components clean and leave throat oil in it when it is stored.
i have that same sprayer, ran full thickness oil based rustoleum in 28 degree weather and it sprayed it like a champ. The machine is a little spendy, but its worth every penny! Also, use diesel to clean it out and gave it a rinse with mineral spirits after the bulk of material was flushed. Way cheaper than running like 3 gallons of mineral spirits through it.
It's good color but mine is a dael red with nice numbers and writing on it . so i'm leaving it the way it came ! but i do like camo and you never know it could happen !
did anybody else wanna say "stop trying to crank it youo gonna kill the battery!" ...? lol.... i love this video! you killed it man!!! i gotta get one of those machines!!! that thing is NO joke!
great video! thank you! now the guys don't have an excuse to take longer than you :-) LOL what type of gun could one use to do that with an air compressor?
That paint machine is a beast. Very cool. Questions... I Googled it (Bing) It is sold at Home Depot , as well as other places. Is the tip you're using (spray wand) included with it, or did you have to buy that extra? If so, what is it ?
I bought this machine from Home Depot back @2005 for about $300 and I don't remember if the tip came with it or not. I did purchase the extention separately. You have to get the correct tip for the type of paint that you are spraying though.
the paint on shipping containers on average lasts about 10 to 15 years and I would say that shipping container is older than 10 to 15 years however i do agree with not using the paint meant for a marine environment because there isnt much point on paying extra when the container isn't in a marine environment
I used about 3 gallons on the 4 sides and no I did not have to thin it. I painted the roof with 1 gallon of the Rustoleum Rusty metal primer followed up by 1 gallon of Rustoleum white top coat. If I do another container roof, I will be spraying it with the Behr brand exterior paint because it seems to be holding up better than the roof treated with the Rustoleum.
Random, I know. But what "grade" was the shipping container when you bought it? I am contemplating getting one and don't mind the finished look that you achieved. To get a single trip is around 3600, CWO is 2800, and WWT is 2500. Just trying to figure out how much this project is going to cost me.
All that prep on the old paint ,would have made a nicer job if you had beat out the dents its not hard to planish them up I work in a container yard do it day in day out
Not so much about shipping containers as about a paint sprayer Skipping ahead during the painting scenes will save you 15 minutes, but I would like to know how th latex held up especially over the cold galvanizing. I have one to paint and have already touched up with the cold g. What's your weather there?
Hello, I am a painter and what I saw did not use primer And the painting will last a year if they put paint for water based metal is better and lasts 10 years of warranty although a little more expensive but it is much better thanks
3 gallons for the vertical sides. 1 gallon of Rustoelum red primer and 1 gallon of Rustoleum white top coat for the roof. The inside took 4 gallons for the 4 vertical interior sides and the ceiling. I used 1 gallon of Rustoleum garage floor paint for the floor.
@@homesteadprepper I watched the beginning again and you said your wife chose milkweed pod! Have you heard of elastomeric paint? I wonder if a coat of that would work?
Actually you only need to support the container on the corners. So only 4 blocks will work. They are designed to be stacked like blocks up to 8 high and that is fully loaded with cargo.... The other containers only touch each other on the corners!!!! If you get bigger than 40' like 45', those have 2 extra corner blocks that can support weight also. Those are there in case you stack a 40' on top a 45' or vice versa....
I thought about having a body man come over to pull out all the dents and put a candy apple red paint job on it but, I decided to not run the container in a parade. lol

What a dingbat. He probably lost over a gallon in overspray!! No ground cloth?! And..... Should've primed all the galvi. AND..... Definitely should have used oil based paint!!!
The Berh paint is holding up amazing well. No peeling and no cracking. Also, no new rust is forming in my hot and humid Florida climate. The container was spot sandblasted, treated with Ospho rust converter and sprayed with a cold galvanizing compound prior to the top coat.
Thanks for taking time putting this informative video up! It's still helping people 7 years later. Appreciate it!

true, but it always looks better painted on top of the corten steel :-)
the mistake it to remove that layer to "fix" it

Thanks for showing us how its done, its hard to beat the paint gun.
Nice and fast cant beat that combination.
1:25 what paint exactly did you use and how much did you paid for it ?
(Great video, thanks)
Fast Dry or Dry Fall enamel works well too when spraying these. About 60-70 bucks a gallon

yeh it does :)
great work, I got a truck for you to do next

You’ll need to regularly remove the tree leaves from the roof, they certainly will rust a metal roof.

How many gallons of paint did it use? Did you paint the roof too?
3 gallons on the sides. I used 1 gallon of Rustoleum primer and 1 gallon of top coat on the roof.
Is there a paint tip like that for normal air compressor?
You can buy water based rust-o-leum paint. I think that is what I will use. Thanks for the video, cheers.
Great! But then how long does it take to clean the machine?
I have never timed it but, it probably takes @10-15 min. I am sure a professional painter could do it much faster.
What type paint was that ? Oil based ?
Behr exterior latex paint from Home Depot. Water based.
I don’t get it. What difference does it make if it takes 10 minutes, or 20 minutes, or even 2 hours? Is your schedule that tight? 🤷♂️
I guess you are an internet ninja and you have never painted anything?
How much paint did those 2 coats take? Thanks.
3 gallons.
Do you have a video with the Sandblaster prep?

Hi,
Is that up on blocks set up legal for making a shipping container home 🏡?
I live in Connecticut.
You would need to contact you local building inspector to properly answer that.
Thx @homesteadprepper
how much paint did it take ? ok three gallons is about 300 bucks !
3 gallons at Home Depot was $100.
How much paint per container?
3 gallons for the vertical sides. 1 gallon of Rustoelum red primer and 1 gallon of Rustoleum white top coat for the roof. The inside took 4 gallons for the 4 vertical interior sides and the ceiling. I used 1 gallon of Rustoleum garage floor paint for the floor.

I can't remember.

How has the paint held up?
Believe it or not the Behr exterior paint on the walls is holding up better than the Rustoleum I put on the roof almost 5 years ago.
Nice respirator, most painters don’t think they need one spraying outside, that’s far from the truth.
Would this also be suitable for sprayfoam too?
No.
For about $20 bucks more you could have gotten invisible paint a Lowe's.
i'm with you JERRY, invisible wouldn't show all that unnecessary overspray. Although I get my invisible from home Depot, It's $1.99 cheaper.
