Unusual Hawk | An Impressive Traveler: Pandion haliaetus
Unusual Hawk | An Impressive Traveler: Pandion haliaetus video celebrates one of nature’s most unique and unusual birds of prey the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus).
An Osprey may log more than 160,000 migration miles during its 15-to-20-year lifetime! This large, fish-eating bird of prey can be found across every continent, except Antarctica and is second only to the peregrine falcon in terms of distribution.
They are unusual among hawks in possessing a reversible outer toe that allows them to grasp with two toes in front and two behind. Barbed pads on the soles of the birds' feet help them grip slippery fish. When flying with prey, an Osprey lines up its catch head first for less wind resistance.
They have sharp spicules on the underside of their toes and barbed scales on their rounded rather-than-grooved talons, that help keep their catch secure.
Ospreys also have closable nostrils to keep out water out when they dive, and oily feathers to prevent them from being waterlogged.

It's been wonderful having the Osprey nesting close to the house. I'm learning a lot about them and their behavior. Did you know that the male Osprey does most of the nest building? At the 0:43 mark you can see the male cleaning the nest by kicking debris out of the nest. I hope you enjoyed watching these magnificent travelers. I am grateful to each and everyone that takes the time to watch. I appreciate your time and support.
👍4 thx for sharing dear friend 🫶 💜 🍁
Incredible close views of these magnificent hawks Becca. You are so fortunate to have them close and observe their nesting behaviors and with each other. Beautiful observations! Best regards, Cathy

Awesome footage and very cool that they chose to nest nearby. I didn't know the male does most of the nestbuilding.

Hi Becca, I love Ospreys. I have seen them in Scotland. There is a project here in Southern England to reintroduce ospreys (and sea eagles). A pair of ospreys raised 2 chicks this year very near us, the first ospreys to be bred in England for 200 years. Tx for sharing. Best wishes, Rob
Yes there are quite a few of those around here too I'm always jealous when I go fishing and I saw one soaring around with a big fish .Big like from me.
Hi Becca this was a stunning video from you as always, great bird footage and the music added to it :) ~ Anna 👍
Wonderful footage of one of my favourite birds!! An iconic species over here Becca. We have had a local population returned here around 25 years ago. Lost the species back in the early 1900’s.
Great footage, very interesting video.
Thanks a lot for sharing, Bert.
