I've said to my son a number of times that I honestly don't know how the hell I'm still alive with how often I just went for walks at night when I was younger, & I started doing it at a much younger age than 16 too!!
What happened to that sweet young girl was so awful. May Colette Rest in Peace xxx

My mother used to lock me out of the house and I spent many nights living rough as a child. I'm so lucky to be alive, I've done so much stupid stuff.
As a parent of three now, it breaks my heart that a lovely young girl can be taken from her family. RIP Collette.

It's the same for me. I'm 43 and am astounded I survived being young and confident. But I think it truly must be the case that these instances of random stranger, intentional murders are very rare (statistically)

      Intrinsic? Female intuition?
Unfortunately there is no such thing as a telepathic bond between mother and child. And to say so is condescending towards not only every loving father but also every mother who has lost a child and didn't 'feel' it when their child was dying.
If a teen goes missing and their entire family tell the police that they feel something is wrong well that's when the police should take the report seriously and jump into action.

What a horrible excuse for a man he's lived his life for 25 years knowing what he'd done. Lied throughout his life even proporting to have cancer. I think this was excellent police work after 25 years I dont think he ever imagined he'd be caught and then going on to blame his dead brother. I remember this case 25 years ago. Rest in peace beautiful Colette you did not deserve this and love to her mum who's life was ruined forever because of this pervert. Kudos to our police force.

Yes, this could happen to anyone. I could picture wanting to walk at her age on a nice night. I was 18 when this took place. I loved walking at night at that time. So yeah, it could happen to anyone. Kinda wished her Mom insisted even more in driving her and giving her no choice, but she probably thought they didn't live in a dangerous neighborhood. My Mom was so strict that she would drive around to make sure i was going where i should be. So embarrasing! Now i look back and realize that i gave my Mom concern to be really strict with me. Where this girl was a good girl that her Mom didn't have to keep an eye out on her and a bad thing happened. It was NOT Collette's fault at all, but that man still had to meet his maker after committing suicide.

You would think you are safe at 8pm at night, so many what ifs, if only her boyfriend had left moments quicker, cycled faster to meet her on her way to his. If only the mum had stood in front of the front door and said no I am driving you there. If only her friends she bumped into were walking the same way as her, if only, if only 😞 Colette had a sweet and innocent face so I wonder if that is why he decided to kidnap her. An actual dose of reality from parents to their kids would be very normal... had this been the case that young lady would have straight up paid attention to her mothers advice that day... Fact was that she, like many others, was completely oblivious to that 100% real world out there. Full of deadly animal activity.... if parents want to raise their children in a manufactured bubble by all means carry on... Won't be long before 'reality comes knocking on your door!

I don’t think when he approached that easy - planed well
Day before stole the car - night after easy tried to catch the minders - without been worried to be seen - this was never his first time - sure not last either
He did have a habit for sex crimes - he knew how to do it - he knew he was smarter then cops - how ? Cause he done it & they didn’t know him - so he did it again and again
I think if they looked around same type of crimes on minders they sure could find more . And he killed himself because he thought he was untouchable. Sad for victims & their families, their life sentence it’s forever .

The police were really bad in the early 80s . I was treat in such an appalling manner in 1986 after i suffered an extremely violent stranger attack that ruined my life and families life forever . I was acussed if lying it left me even more traumatized my patents died not knowing who had attacked me. Then 24 yrs later through DNA they said they had traced his identity and arressted him. He went to prison for ten years but he had lived a life and i had not my life was ruined. He did five years and was out on a one years licence and was free. Well keast he was caught my friends said was put onto VISOR for life. Im so sorry for this mother and her family my attacker was brutal and had a knife.but I survived .It can happened to anyone, in any town i lived in a safe place in fact the first thing the police said to me was " things like that dont happen here " .

These aren’t very nice thoughts, but I can’t say I’m sorry for feeling this way.
Also - thank God that little girl he met earlier had her dog with her. Being with the dog, which would’ve probably been ready to fight for her and cause a ruckus, scared him off and most likely saved her life. I wish he hadn’t found another victim though…

I feel so bad for Jacqui Kirkby, Colette's mother. She was going to insist on driving her daughter & Colette talked her out of it.
It sucks that Colette cudn't walk dwn the street & be safe. Collette had every right to get to her boyfriend's on her own. Unfortunately if a predator is hunting that means u r not safe. Even if u shud hav the right to be. People just can't take risks b/c u nvr know who will take advantage.. Unfortunately thr r always people u nvr know where, who will opportunize in the most evil way.

I can't help but wonder how many more women he has raped and killed. Was this his first, I am quite sure it wasn't his last. Selfish nasty monsters like this don't care about the pain they cause others, only what they want. I know the police did that absolute best they could, and justice ( if you can call it that) 25 years late is better than no justice at all. I would say justice would have been raping and killing him, but we aren't the monsters, he is. Well done to the police and DNA scientists. Prayers out to Collette's mother and family. It is difficult to move past the murder of a loved one, but that intense aching heart of missing them never goes away.
Prayers out to his family too, I can't imagine how painful it must be for his parentsand family to know they had a monster in their midst.

What's the point of the very loud music throughout the video, which makes it very stressful and in parts impossible to understand especially what the speaker in the off but also the persons in the video are saying? Most makers of this kind of videos seem to be driven in a compulsive way to add loud music not being aware that music turns into noise when it superimposes itself on the talking. It seems to me they have learnt in their training:No video without (loud) music; and they cling to it, unable to leave apart this principle even in videos where it doesn't fit in. In my opinion that reflects a lack of talent and courage.

Sure all his life he did this if they looked for sex crimes murders around him and the the stolen cars - they could find many many more -- his sick and every night when he gotten that need he left his house for hunger hunting- I’m not sure if his going to be in jail for rest of his life . Died in prison 2010! The year he was imprisoned - so he really served just about no time and had the whole of his adult life unlike the poor girl. Anyway well done to the police. i do encourage people to put their DNA on ancestry etc websites. I took a very hard look at the pros and cons before doing so (as it could mean a relative of yours is caught) but decided the pros outweigh the cons and that it is a morally right decision.

I was just thinking I wndr if there will be a day wen everyone's DNA will be taken @ birth & put on ONE universal human data base? I mean, if it means catching & stopping criminals from doing more harm i'd be for it but unfortunately thr wud prbly be many unintended consequences & abuses of the info. So it prbly wud nvr happen or be a good idea in the big picture.
I wish we cud stop & punish people like this horrible man & hold them accountable to Justice more easily somehow. I really wish we cud PREVENT them from having the opportunity to do harm in the 1st place. But I think the only way to do that is to teach young people from a very early age that thr r bad people who harm & teach them real self defense methods. But even then idk if it cud prevent some of these monsters from being able to commit their crimes. And it is not fair to hav to tell kids about the scary world they live in. But I think preparing kids/youth for a bad situation might help them get out of it. possibly. & as they grow into young adult hood they wud hang on to self-defense skills that cud help them anytime

According to a newspaper, he died of an overdose while in custody. He had been taken off suicide watch and was then able to get some drugs to kill himself with. It was sad enough that he walked around as a free man for 25 years, but then to have access to drugs while in custody so that he didn't have to endure a life-long prison sentence is a double insult!! No justice at all in this case.

    • @christinebarker5248

I would suppose that he was in reality always looking over his shoulder, however. He must have been aware of the advancement of DNA profiling. I remember growing up with people saying ' one of these days they'll have the knowledge needed to be able to pinpoint a suspect in a crime'. He must have heard this also. I had an acquaintance a woman, who picked up with a man who faked illness and cancer. He was not ill at all but had a terrific need for pity. Screwed up just like this killer about whom we have just learned.
