I use one of these each Sunday for the Cajon, & Bass. I like your bass guitar release at between .5 & 1, probably make that my standard for now on. I set the attack to 50ms, and because the unit is stereo linked, and you can't change it... I run bass through one side, and the Cajon through the other. It works as a virtual 'side chain' due to the Cajon's triggering the compressor to 'clamp down' and 'duck' the bass. With the attack at 50 ms, the poke through of the Cajon is followed by a controlled sustain of the bass.
Tim Kasey (continued) I replaced my DBX 166 with this compressor. I like them both, and get good results with both. I think the 'knee' of this compressor is probably between 3 & 4, and the 166 might be something like 2-2.75. You can't alter the attack and release of the 166, and therefore can't fine tune the feel. I don't know for sure what the 'knee' is, but I do know that on slower music a larger knee makes for a really nice rise time on the kick, and I love how that feels.
Do you think hardware compressors are needed anymore? I'm not as passionate about recording as you are so for me plugins are great for me and my wallet. However I just record for fun so i just wanted to hear an opinion from someone who takes it more seriously than I do.
I've noticed hardware sounds a lot thicker and warmer than just using digital plugins, which is probably because the signal is being processed by physical amps, not digital plugins which only emulate those same amps.
I'm looking at getting one to make recording easier. I love software compressors and I have no complaints, but recording with a compressor before the preamp is something I'm needing because the dynamics of a vocal performance can sometimes clip at the preamp but at other times be barely loud enough.
Hi I'm new with using compressors and just bought this. I am interested in recording male pop (high) vocals. I have a Grace M101 preamp , a Cloudlifter, a Focusrite Clarett 2Pre. My mic is the Shure SM7b. How do I connect the compressor in the vocal chain? And can anyone suggest some compressor settings to begin with?

Just ordered one of these. When you record, do you put it on the insert of whatever channel you're using on your mixer?

@@catalystdrums123 How do you compress before the preamp?? Mics need an amp to provide gain....
@@jensenjames7444 Turns out you don't
How about live shows lol?
