  • In the 20's, a grand "atmospheric theater" was built in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Kalamazoo State Theater has stood for almost 100 years. Through Vaudeville, Silent Films, Talkies, Concerts, Plays and many other performances. It began during the Great Depression and was slated for demolition in the 80s. Today, the staff is keeping it alive through a global pandemic as all small venues struggle to survive.
We take a tour with the staff of this small venue and all of its grand presence. We explore behind the curtain at a living piece of history that has endured and still inspires awe when you visit.

Stumbled upon your channel and this particular video tonight - what a fun surprise! I've worked as an usher at the State Theatre for about 10 years, and have had the pleasure of giving tours there in the last year & a half. Very pleased that this theater has survived for so long. Thank you for highlighting it on your channel!

I grew up in Galesburg, stone throw away from Kazoo, I loved going to the State Theater and looking up at "the Stars" And all the other interesting things along the walls! Great Video! Thank you!

That was so cool, I remember seeing Bela Fleck and the Flecktones there many years ago. I could sense the vintage vibes, but had no idea how historic this place actually is. Great story about the citizens banding together to save this wonderful venue--reminds me of how so many people came together to save and restore Orchestra Hall, which reputedly has the best acoustics in Detroit. Then, of course, there's the inspiring story of Isaac Stern rallying to save Carnegie Hall.

I have been to a few shows over the years, at the State, the last was Gabriel Iglesias. being 6' 2" you need to get seats with none in front of you , (the balcony)
it was built when tall people were only 5'8". Love the Chanel.

That was so cool! In Ionia we have a restored Vaudeville theater. Volunteers run concessions and sell tickets. It has live performances and an updated projection room for first run movies. These theaters are treasures 🤗👏🏼

Concerts and "other things". Care to elaborate? Is your statue still up on the Western campus? I wished I lived in K'zoo, I'd like to tackle that organ restoration.

Weddings, Retirement Parties, Birthday Parties, Occasional Viking Raiding Rally, etc. The organ restoration would be quite fascinating, I think.

@@troymilks7342 LOL. It is just what I would expect from your theatrical tastes. But I fear, precious few would understand the reference. Which is a good thing!

I nominate Betsy DeVoss to donate the money to restore that organ.

I remember working on big "air conditioning" fans like those in the open segment.

Practical ventilation system. Kind of a huge "whole house fan". Draws basement air and distributes through mushroom vents under seats. Though, they've been changing it over the years and soon to actually have air conditioning.
