Hi...namaskaram...can do thovayal also. Grind sundakkai with required quantities of tamarind,turmeric powder,red chillies , salt and little water. Then in a pan add oil ,mustard,then the paste and fry for sometime with powdered asafoetida . Now tasty thuvayal ready . Thuvayal saadhathukku rhomba Nanna irukkum. curd ricekkum thottukkalam

Lovely recipe. I do have sundakkai tree in my Shillong Quarter n during seasons I am left with a lof of them. I make sundakkai puli kuzhambu, vathakuzhambu, kootu, curry with lot of grated coconut, vathal,etc. since most tribals use in dry fish, curries, etc, I have one tree outside my quarters, just for hostel students to pluck them n cook them. Would love to try churnam too in near future. The tree bears right now lovely flowers, which are gradually falling due to heavy rains this week. Your sundakkai sambar recipe is a great one n I will try soon. Can I use sundakkai vathal instead of fresh ones that are not yet available?
