I just came back from Kenya and Tanzania last week actually. I had an amazing time there; best trip of my life. But the ONE thing..the ONE thing I absolutely hated about my time there, was the amount of people trying to steal, scam, and hustle you out of your hard earned money. The corruption, the bribes, the constant need to grease palms to get simple things done. It left a horrible impression. It was so prevalent that it became hard to trust people and make genuine connections. Again; amazing trip: saw some beautiful stuff and met many great people. But the scammy mentality of a lot of folks there from top to bottom really makes traveling there insufferable sometimes

I ordered a meal and was quoted one price (they claimed to not have a menu) then come to find out the meal was in fact cheaper than what was quoted. My friend had to help me get the rest of my money back. The server didn’t even want to hand me the money herself out of shame. If they would have told me the real price, focused on good service, then asked for a tip at the end I would have given them more than what they took from me. But the smash and grab mentality prevents folks from thinking long term.

I saw a vlog a while back of this women motorcycle traveler she got stopped at a check point and two police officers tried to get money out of her to pass but she was recording the whole incident the two police officers were fired and publicly striped of rank this should be done to anyone caught on video Extorting money at , AIRPORT,BORDER, AND CHECK POINTS.
Going to Nairobi, I left a bag on the plane. They wouldn't let me go get it, ..security, so one of them did it. After returning it, he shook me down with "don't you think that's worth a $20 tip?" He was just doing his job and I had just gotten off a 24hr flight with my service animal. Welcome to Kenya.

We had problems at Entebbe Airport and I am black. They tried to tell us that we had too much hand lugga6. It was the same airline that we used to come in. But they were taking luggage from other people who were not flying. I suspect they wanted to use our allowance for their own smuggling ends. One of our party ranted and they ended up sending us through. My sister needed assistance because she is blind. They said there is no such thing available. After we got through security one of their bosses asked where our assistance was. We told them that we were told there was no such thing at the airport. He called one of the 2 idiots that had been harassing us and demanded that he get us to our aeroplane. He was grumpy but we shouted at him all the way to our seats. He also tried to run away from a lady with a baby in a pram. We held the lift for her which gave us more time with him so we could carry on giving him hell. Turns out he was just a rat that thought it was a lion. His boss was not amused. I hope he got into trouble
Corruption is horrible. It’s not unique to one country or one continent. Im a black American and experienced corruption in Accra and Kumasi airport in Ghana and while driving on the roads in Nicaragua…all left a bad taste in my mouth. I say America just as bad because all of our corruption is legalized and called TAXES 😂😂😂

Any person encounter a corrupt airport staff/worker, should request for the manager(hopefully the manager is not also corrupt). I have experience once at Nairobi Airport the attempt by an Airport staff/worker to get me to pay money to board my flight; even though, I had the require documents for boarding the flight, I got upset and was about to ask for the manager before he decided was he not going to able to get any money from me.
The practice is egregious and must be reported to the parent company of the airline as soon as possible. If the company is not aware of this type of shake down of passengers, there is nothing they can do about it. This is the only way it can be stopped, and the offenders will lose their jobs.

All countries of Africa will scam travelers, those persons don’t know how to function in that type situation. Each country’s Travel Agency must ensure that traveling people must be given help when are detained for reasons of monetary barriers are imposed on traveling.

Yes, African border crossings both land and air can be very corrupt. I missed a flight to Rwanda from Nairobi due to some non existent technicality that they invented. Fortunately, I was able to get a refund on my ticket. They also tried to bribe me at the Uganda/Kenyan land border but I stood my ground. They made me miss my continuing bus from the border into Kenya but I stayed there at 2am refusing to leave the office until they finally stamped my PP and let me through. I had to wait for the next bus that came through at like 5am but it was worth it. BTW, that green background reminds me so much of East Africa and when that bird flew by cawing, the sound and the imagery flooded me with nostalgia from when I was there.

Yes, African border crossings both land and air can be very corrupt. I missed a flight to Rwanda from Nairobi due to some non existent technicality that they invented. Fortunately, I was able to get a refund on my ticket. They also tried to bribe me at the Uganda/Kenyan land border but I stood my ground. They made me miss my continuing bus from the border into Kenya but I stayed there at 2am refusing to leave the office until they finally stamped my PP and let me through. I had to wait for the next bus that came through at like 5am but it was worth it.
BTW, that green background reminds me so much of East Africa and when that bird flew by cawing, the sound and the imagery flooded me with nostalgia from when I was there.
