BG3! I’m so excited to watch you two play, especially considering how much there is.
Guy in a village smacking rats is usually a concession because D&D (typically) starts at level 1.
So using the higher fantasy elements has both a narrative difficulty in explaining why an inexperienced nobody is, for example, being kidnapped and enlisted by Mind Flayers. And a mechanical issue because Gith/mind flayers/dragons etc should instantly wipe the floor with you without something fudging the numbers.
A good DM can generally improvise around it (one of the most common ways being having an NPC that is obviously of higher power levels hang out with the party for the early on (while predating it, Aragorn and Gandalf are sort of the archetypes of this sort of thing in the Hobbit/LotR).
Videogames (which other then Neverwinter Nights) typically do it because their is no DM to improvise and work around all the potential perils of smashing Level 1 PCs next to CR 10+ creates. (BG3 for its part just has ludicrously gimpy examples of a lot of things that would usually be more signfiicantly powerful. The original 2 were just brutally ridiculosu for letting you walk into a Demilich in a broom closet in stuff lol)
Such fun and chaos to be had in this game. It actually got my roommates into D&D so I'm behind on Patreon cause I'm DMing.

1:37 I'd probably try to stay close to Toaster anyway, since the game only lets you cast spells that influence dialogue options (like Guidance) when you're close to the target (you don't need to cast them beforehand, since there will be in-dialogue options to do it right before a roll, but only if you're close to the target).
3:22 Yeah, the two are very similar (they're both parasitic creatures that invade the minds of their hosts and control them). Mind flayers tadpoles have first appeared in the D&D adventure module "Queen of the Demonweb Pits" in 1980. Yeerks have first appeared in The Invasion (the first book in the Animorphs series, published in June 1996).
4:11 So the Dark Urge is a kind of character that has an impulse to do evil (hence the name) due to a background that's very tied to the story, but as a Dark Urge you still have agency to do whatever you want, including good.

Nice 👍 My favorite subclass is Circle of the Land, because of the focus on spellcasting (it's even better here than in D&D 5e because it lets you mix and match spells from different kinds of lands - I like taking the spells not usually available to druids, like Misty Step, Mirror Image, Lightning Bolt, Cone of Cold, and Greater Invisibility). They also have the wizard's spell slot recovery feature (called Natural Recovery), so it's the power of a wizard but without having to run after spell scrolls to learn spells.
14:08 The three floating towers in the hells are supposed to be Zariel's Flying Fortress, which are fairly common in the Hells. Zariel is one of the main characters from the D&D adventure module Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus, which is a prequel to the events in Baldur's Gate 3. But yeah, it seems likely it was also a visual reference to the "3" in the name of the game.
20:37 Here's something I haven't seen anyone trying: casting Protection from Evil and Good on the intellect devourer (in D&D, their stat block says casting that spell on the host's body drives the intellect devourer out).
24:34 Topple is one of the actions that's tied to the kind of weapon you have. D&D 5e doesn't have those (yet), but they were introduced in the recent One D&D playtest (they're gonna be called Weapon Masteries). Keep in mind this game isn't a completely faithful implementation of D&D 5e (they homebrewed a lot of stuff), so don't assume too much (and read all the descriptions you can). In your case, you're probably better off attacking with cantrips (like Thorn Whip), since those will have higher accuracy (melee weapons use your strength modifier, whereas ranged weapons use your dexterity modifier).

This will also probably be *the* only playthrough of this I watch before playing the game myself as I didn't want to spoil anything... but on the short list of people I shall break rules for, Keith so far is king. Sweetening the pot with Toaster (or Bird or Steph for that matter) is almost cheating.
ROFL.. As soon as I saw Baldurs Gate show up on the list, I was like "Yeah this is gonna be a landslide".. Was not disappointed.

27:04 Don’t worry, everyone I know (including me) used Thunderwave wrong at first. I only found out how it’s supposed to work about a year ago.
It works the way Keith thought it works in WoW.
I haven't played that far into the game myself yet, so I guess I'll be watching along as I get further. Still, can't wait, it's an amazing game so far. If it stays this good throughout it'll almost certainly be my absolute favourite CRPG.
I've never been interested in D&D games, but after that intro, I may just stick around.

I was looking at the votes and thinking "hmm, how come some of these games have such short bars... wait, ALL of the bars are super short except... WTFWTWFWTF :D" - of course, the result is pretty predictable, I must admit.
Good editing on the character creation part! I'm glad we skipped most of that while still leaving the most important parts in (cantrips, hairstyles and kicking Toaster are all equally important XD)
I'm nervous, I feel like I only get to see half of the game since I don't see Toaster's side.
Thunder wave is a 15ft cube originating from you. Which sounds like it’s centred on you but if you go to the spells section it defines the point of origin of a cube as any point on one of its faces.
Casting it centred on you is a valid, way to cast it though as the bottoms of a cube is one of its.
This part of illithid culture does predate animorphs.
Finally patrion chooses a game I actually like

Personally Githzerai are my fave DnD race and as such I would never step so low as to play a Githyanki. In knowing the teachings of Zerthimon I grow stronger.
Heads up if you ever get around to replaying this game, the dark urge origin is not necessarily evil. It brings out a lot more…let’s say intrusive thoughts, and your character will have some more plentiful, and more vivid violent tendencies than others, but rarely does the dark urge *force* you to do evil actions. I’ve definitely seen people do dark urge runs and try to be good regardless and those runs are definitely interesting to experience.

*Shrug*, my co-op playthrough of their previous game, Divinity: Original Sin 2, is my second most popular video ever, so the choice seemed obvious.
Tales of arise is the first game I got 100% steam achievements for so I hope it ends up on this channel in the near future.
