    Hey Arabian Raks Shaki or the belly dance ( I don't know if that is how you spell the original name for the arabian belly dance) are tribal dances, so naturally they would have similarities. Anywhoo! This dance is awesome and I am Bangladeshi. Man I wish i knew how to dance like this. I am so happy different part of the world have different style of dances. I am learning bharatnatyam and it's cool! I love African/MidEast/Indian/Oceanic/asian dancing. So much rhythem and excitement!

    I use to do this kind of dance then I had two kids and lost my shape and all my coordinations.
    I got looked down upon because I am only a quarter polynesian but I look more asian..But I learned all the styles of polynesian dancing, Hawaiian, Samoan, Tahitian, Tongan,etc.. It was such a wonderful experience!

    lol Same here. My best friend and her sister are poly (somoan and tongan) and they grew up dancing, and it bugged with big time with people who weren't pacific islander tried doing tahitian dancing...so I guess I got it from them, but I love watching them do it.

    @Gille87 Actually... The first Polynesians came from many places, Such as Some parts of Africa, some from Asia, and others countries too.... And I agree with you that you don't have to be a native to be good at this 'cause a lot of people who are not from Polynesia do these dances really well too.
    And btw... I'm a half Hawaiian and half Tahitian Girl... and I can't move my hips as good as that hahaha :( It's very sad lol!

    I just have a question here: Why in some of the videos they have the grass skirts and in others the Tahitian dancers wear the sarong's? Is that simply for show or a cultural difference in some way?
    BTW, I've been to Hawaii, the Big Island on the Kona side and Maui like 6 times....BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS! It really is Paradise! Plus the culture is so fascinating!

    I think it's both, and it's their legs that determ the speed of their fa'rapuus. The hips makes the movements, while their legs adjusts the speed and the skirt just moves along=)

    The newest thing is from Thailand, which could make sense because Ive seen some Thais who could easily pass off for a Hawaiian/Asian mix. And to the other guy, Unless she looks like one of the guys in my pictures, I doubt she looks like a real Tahitian or any kind of Polynesian for that matter.

    And for the record, the native americans also came out of Asia, Sibir. Many have common genes wich link them to koreans, and mongolians, but offcourse way back. And the evidence for the pollys coming out of asia, is their aperance, the food, and lifestck they brought witht hem, and the language. And the biggest evidence is the LANGUAGE! Both pollys and SEA belongs to the same stock; AUSTRONESIAN. You guys should read more, and talk to pollys, that knows their history, instead of racist comments!

    Iaorana. Well you shouldn't feel bad, cuz the first polynesian people were from asia/ south east asia. I don't care if you don't belive me, and for the record, asia is not all about looking chinese, China is just one of many countries! And it's a fact that you don't have to be a native to be good at this dance, and that goes for all types of dances. You just have to put your heart and soul in it, and respect it's origin. mauruuru

    I am angered that so few acknowledge the Cook islands.. in history books they say that the Cook islanders came from Tahiti.. but its far from factual.. we all came from somewhere else.. but in the intervening years our own cultures sprouted and gave forth much diversity.. while retaining some common aspects..

    Wow I like the real true culture. Of what people can do as there gifts and talents. If there born and raised in that state or country. Its cool with there heritage. But I don't like seeing someone from China cooking soul food. That's where it's messed up. If I ever go to China I want to see China. Same as native American. Every one has gifts and talents. Its cool if there half of or all of nationality. But if there not half or pure. Its just not the real thing. Its. Cool to see other cultures. And there cooking and Danceing and arts. If your born and raised. Or half its cool.

    Did u no that many pacific island peoples were nearly wiped out by the european invasion mostly from diseases? In Tahiti for example 10s of thousands were wiped out.. leaving only a small percentage of native Tahitian people left.. after there population was screwed by these invading cultures not much was left for them to work with..
    Then there culture was stolen from them.. made to speak french.. and their cultural heritage in tatters.. they should revive their own unique culture..

  • @kilipaki87oritahiti
    @kilipaki87oritahiti 12 років тому

    Funny how u mock Ori, bc how u dance today, Tahitians danced many years back, u claim they stole and copy, hmn! ''traditional'' kuki airani dance, they used to only sway side to side, until they started to dance like the Tahitians, doing fa'arapu...u copy others bit by bit, then in return u blame them for stealing!

  • @cuppachachu
    @cuppachachu 13 років тому

    Watching this makes me sick.. Revive your True Tahitian Culture.. stop stealing from the Cook Islands.. surely there are some smart people that can help your own cultures original music and dances come out.. isnt that more valuable than pretending that this dance and drumming is from your own culture when it isnt..
    Do you feel some sense of worth portraying this as your own?.. Have you no pride in your own Origins that you need to steal it from someone else?
