Toronto grocery service diverting imperfect food from landfill

- With about 60 per cent of the food produced in Canada going to waste every year, a Toronto company is working to rescue the perfectly edible produce that is sent to landfill just because it is a little less than perfect. Dilshad Burman reports.
We have a place out here (one of the farms) that actually sells their imperfect foods on the side of the road rather than throwing it out. All the pretty stuff goes to the store, and all the stuff that doesn't look as nice they just sell from a stall at discounted prices. My family always loved that place.
Wow, citytv actually doing a good news story, kudos.
I'm...surprised..
But an anomaly, I'm sure.
@@TurningoffyourGaslights bound to happen once every decade
We need a grocery code like that in France, where supermarkets are bound by law not to throw away food. They have to either sell it or donate it for consumption.
Divyansh Ojha is making 100% sense. C'mon food banks - get with it.
too good to gop best deals
Yeah, but what about seagulls? (HA!)
Food Banks can't afford to chase businesses for their old food, push your grocery store to donate instead. You have the power, and the responsibility to exercise it.
how can too good to go sell reduce stuff?@@VioletStorm2288
Great story. Congratulations and continued success…
This is what happens when only the big corporations are in charge of whether we starve or not ! That's what happens when small business goes away ! No competition leaves us at the mercy of GREEDY corporations !
True, and made all the worse by fraudulent and dishonest taxes, the carbon tax in particular
Proud customer of Odd Bunch! Because they are deciding on the produce on Monday and delivering it on Wednesday, It's often fresher than the store. I love my Odd Bunch box and look forward to receiving it!
Loblaw’s naturally imperfect food is not just look imperfect. It actually goes bad
I've been using this service and as a senior love it both for cost and accessibility Thank you❤
Loblaws has their version of this. The "Perfectly Imperfect" line. More expensive than the perfectly perfect produce. Lol.
Cant believe there is still waste when the lineups are getting longer !
Great work💯
why not organize drop-offs at library or school parking lots, rather than home delivering each box?
Not only is there food waste, but there is an additional cost to the food distribution system (wholesalers, distributors, retailers, food service companies) to dispose of food they don't use. There has been stores in Europe that specialize in expired packaged food, but this is the first time I've seen a retail store selling imperfect food.
Loblaws has had it for years in their fresh & frozen fruit/veg sections. Where've you been?
@@AellaMaud No Loblaws in Quebec anymore.
great idea!
I love this!!
Just placed an order for a small box.. this is a great idea and good going all the best!
Are there some organic vegetables??
Nwt has a problem with expensive food, also old produce can be put in deserts for compost.
This has been an issue for years, throwing out food like this...or destroying it because prices aren't what the distributors want it to be.
Get rid of our government and bring in competition more grocery chains let them now compete and lower prices for your business
Crazy crazy world !!! I would definitely buy those veggies…
Loblaws is probably furious about that
❤😊 awesome idea.
Love the idea, however how is this cheaper? its $46 plus shipping and tax for a large box which looks pretty small.
too good to go better deals
The CEO said it's $20 for 14 to 15 lbs.
I'd say $1.35 per pound is cheaper than avg. for produce.
@@dixonpinfold2582 Buddy, its not just $20 for a significantly small box. You have to pay $4 for shipping (could be more judging on your area) with almost a week waiting period and tax on top of the total. There's also no way to pick it up yourself saving that shipping cost anywhere on there site. They're not doing this of the goodness of their heart with these prices while getting all the groceries for FREE!
@@chrisanthony144 They might have to source these from multiple farmers aggregate this to a single warehouse and there will definitely be some shipping costs involved.
I don't think farmers will give them away for free if they think they can make money out of this. Plus they are doing this for making money to pay their salaries of drivers renting a warehouse. I don't think this is a charity that recieved government funding.
@@HPSGamingTech As stated in the video "fruits and vegetables that are not visually appealing are thrown in the garbage". Maybe you should actually look at the video before commenting?
Sell the items as imperfect food
Like some grocery stores do
All those imperfect oranges & citrus fruit "grown in Canada" wasted. How tragic. Do any of these City News employees or even the Odd Bunch guy know anything about farming in Canada, what grows here & in what season? I didn't see any imperfect produce in those boxes being delivered by Odd Bunch. I suspect this is more of a buy in bulk & a redistribution/delivery program. Most produce , perfect or imperfect, doesn't grow in Canada in winter.
This is a good idea, you could even makes juices and soups. Way too much waste always happening..
in norway, it is common o sell prosuce and meats past the bestbefore date
We have this same thing here in the US. Forgot the company name now though.
But thanks to Galen Weston we can get imperfect foods because they hike their prices up ridiculously so no one can afford while having the audacity to ask us to donate money to causes.Hope he gets his just desserts one day.
Good bussines modal .❤
Food security organizations across the country do this every day…but give it away for FREE!!
Buy bagged apples and you will be hard pressed to find one that is not bruised, split skin, rotted at the core and this for $6.00 in a country that grows a lot of fruit.
It's def ironic that it needs to exist
❤
I'd like to help I often think of textile waste as well
Looks like Ontario is lucky. In Alberta there is so much on the shelves that
should be in the garbage. And it doesn't matter if it's the no name stores
or the bigger and greedier corporations.
Please send them to Indian international students. They desperately need it.
Why is edible food being sent to landfills?
Great news. Who wouldn't want a tomato that looks like a bum? I would
Dont get me wrong, i love the idea, but Its not just $20 for a significantly small box. You have to pay $4 for shipping (could be more judging on your area) with almost a week waiting period and tax on top of the total. There's also no way to pick it up yourself saving that shipping cost anywhere on the site. They're not doing this of the goodness of their heart with these prices while getting all the groceries for FREE! They're adopting a bit of the value village strategy.
The food banks need to adopt to this as there's a lot of mouths to feed there.
my guy got beef with beef
Oh Canada 😂🥱
Tired odd Buch it is not worth it and it auto adds subscription and you will not know until you get the next order and cancel as soon as you try the first order if you are testing.
I am experiencing the same issue with them. They use shady tactics on website and grey out this info on your email confirmations. I canceled my order and after some words with customer service. They confirmed I would no longer receive any order and surprise here is another order being delivered to me. To good to be true dont believe the hype its just another corp wanting to proyect and grow their bottom line.
Nothing wrong those fruits and vegetables other than the price tag. If you compare to some of produce that's being sold at walmart/shoppers with a 50%off discount stickers.
go lookup to goood to go thn
This is a small step to the homeless crisis. But remember, these are human beings who deserve more than half-rotten food none of us would buy. Instead we could be treating people as human beings, forcing grocery stores to regularly donate a portion of FRESH food to all the people who cannot afford food. At some point we have to recognize we do not have a society unless we take care of the PEOPLE in it. Businesses can fail while people thrive, but without people, there is no business.
half of the produce gets thrown out at the store !!
TAX EXCESS PROFITS!
Good man.
Send all GMO foods to landfill
How do we sign up
Probably their website. Odd bunch is the name
I just signed up on their website - Odd Bunch. Ordered a medium size box. $32 plus $4 shipping.
Please do not waste food for cosmetic reasons. Also people should not have to pay an arm and a leg for groceries.
Fruity man bun follower!
Congratulations to you , 👍 I would buy👏👏
this is a advertorial. Mama earth is priced the same and has been doing this for years. this guy is just buying in bulk and redistributing it like any farmers market does in most cities.
My experience has been negative. I no longer trust this company especially with my personal financial information. Best of luck...
This idea could be implemented across our country but with financially transparent by donation places to eat that prepare batches of healthy food all day long. The meals that don’t get eaten could be delivered to local residents who want healthy food. A part of that system could be a way to generate electricity and health data through cardiovascular exercise, data that could be used as a commodity to help ensure healthy food for everyone. To help us avoid unfair/unjust tipping/gratuity situations we could make the living wage the minimum wage for all food service workers.
yet too good to go better deals
It is due to government regulations food is going to waste. Go and check restaurants and canteens in big companies how they throw food which aren't even spoiled. The problem is the things which give us life and are easily available we don't appreciate and value like water and food. But sell our kidneys for apple phones😂😂😂😂
Canada is like third world country good stuff are exported and bad ones left here😂😂😂
Well if you are going to cry about this..give it to real Canadians..oh my is that racist?
Loblaws has their version of this. The "Perfectly Imperfect" line. More expensive than the perfectly perfect produce. Lol.
