    The German soldier that Malarkey was talking to was actually from the same town as Malarkey, but the producers thought the audience wouldn't believe it so they had changed it so he was from a nearby town in Oregon.

      It's not so well known today, but there was a time when the US was very friendly to Fascism and Nazism. There was the German American Bunt that held rallies in New York. Right up until the Japanese attack on Hawaii, most Americans wanted to remain neutral or even make a deal with Hitler.

    Never been in the military, so I'm not sure what it'd be like under those conditions.
    But as a Skydiver, the scariest part is always in the plane waiting to get a good altitude. I've got just under 300 jumps in my book and I still feel sick in the plane, especially when the door opens and your lungs fill up with clean air. I think it's the feeling of anxiousness? I just feel like I have a lump in my throat, I feel sick and my mouth is dry. I become so apprehensive for the jump. As soon as I'm out of the door though, all of that fear goes away immediately and free falling is one of the most relaxing things I have ever done in my life. When my parachute deploys correctly, I'm elated from what I just experienced (and of course knowing that I'll probably land safely). And when I land, I actually feel disappointed that it all ended so quickly and now I have the chore of picking my canopy up without damaging it and hauling it over to the bus that's waiting for me at the DZ.

    Little notes from the episode
    The plane that explodes and burned was Lt Thomas Meehan’s plane. You can hear the pilot say for Meehan to get everyone out just before it explodes. Sgt William Evans(Simon Pegg episode 1) was also on that plane. A farmer found Evans’ dog tags in a tree 44 yrs after the crash. There’s a monument in France near the crash site with the names of all the paratroopers that died on that flight.
    Paratroopers we’re verbally told by CO’s to not take prisoners during the d day landings as they wouldn’t have enough man power to take care of them and it would also hold them back from completing their objectives.
    There’s also a scene of a random soldier asking Lipton in the grass where battalion headquarters was before lifting his head and getting killed. That paratrooper’s name was Andrew Hill and The History Underground UA-cam channel did a nice tribute going to his place of death and his grave at the Normandy American Cemetery with the American Flag that was sent to his family when he died.

    Well, this is when the sh*t gets real. "We're not lost Private...we're in Normandy." This one line displays Winter's ability to instill confidence in his men, even unarmed in the face of all adversity. And this soldier wasn't even a member of Easy Company. Currahee ♠

    A couple of things: First, the leg bag that they were talking about was loaded by the American army to a certain volume regardless of the weight. The British SOP stated specific weight restrictions as they had a lot more experience with airborne operations. Second, On my first deployment in April of 2003, the plane ride over was tense and we actually had 2 fights break out on the flight because of nerves. Now, I didn't jump into Iraq but I was flying into an active war zone and knew that we were going to be in harm's way. I dealt with it by putting my job ahead of any feelings I had. The job really depends on it.

      The message does highlight one aspect of the Normandy landings: any withdrawal would be at the Allies' discretion and timetable. No matter how badly the land forces were defeated, they could always pull back under the guns of the USN and Royal Navy. The Germans wouldn't dare to send armour against naval gunnery.

    "It's the Navy, the invasion has started." I cldn't imagine what it must hv bn like when the American & British Battleships took on the Atlantic wall. Or, what it felt like for men on the ground to hv those "freight train" shells frm the Battleships going overhead. Those Navies were fighting sailors for sure. The men on the ground were a generation of warriors. Lest We Forget !

    Great reaction, Jan. This is by far one of the best series produced. Enjoy the ride with Easy Company! If you have not seen Saving Private Ryan, that is a movie that focuses on the invasion of the Normandy beaches rather than the parachutists. Tom Hanks stars in it and well worth a watch.

      Will add that Saving Private Ryan is a must and is based on the D-Day landings, but the characters in the movie itself are fictional. Note they also use the Flash - Thunder response, which is a nice tie-in to actual events.

    That was Guarneres hangup from the first episode. He had been one of the NCOs since the beginning. Remember he got in the fight on the troop ship because of Winters alleged religion (despite him not being a Quaker)

    During this small battle is was Not far apart from each other just field between them, like the artillery guns are in the end of this block while the barn house the other end of the block just hedges then field then other hedges

    "Smiling when things are uncomfortable & not good." Strange, that used to be my nervous reaction when I was a kid. It went away though. I rmbr it being uncomfortable for me the way people wld react to me smiling when I shouldn't. So, understood.

    Jumping and losing their stuff. I think this happened because this kind of combat jump had not been tried before, and no one predicted that the cords holding the leg-bags would break.

    The battle to take out the guns lasted about 4 hours. That is a lot of intense battle for their first encounter.

    They were flying over the sea until the last few minutes. If they jumped early then they were in the sea, and they would have drowned.

    7kms is 4miles, so an hour or so, possibly two hours if you are being stealthy.

    Keep going Jan, you're doing a great job! This is such an important series that everyone should watch. Each episode is beautifully done and tough to watch, but if you're like most of us you will "fall in love" with the boys from Easy Company and certainly appreciate the sacrifice of The Greatest Generation.

    lmao nice math jan. a mile is 1.6 kilometres, so 7kms is closer to 4 miles than 14 :P
