Loved the setup. Those woods are majestic and the sound she picked up was really spooky. Waking up in bed without any memory was also very chilling. The monster at the end just didn't do the setup justice though. To be honest I don't know that any creature could've done it justice, I think the spookiest part about the sound was mystery to it. Still a great short and I think Andrew Montague has will make more great stuff to come.
I'm confused. How does she not remember how she ended up in her house, yet end up in her house with her recording gear. How does she survive the creature in the forest, but get attacked in her home?
I've got a theory: I reckon, when she's in her home, she's already dead & she's a ghost. She doesn't remember how she died. When she finds the headphones & recording gear, (perhaps a replica of them in the afterlife), they remind her. Maybe the creature is some kind of demon & has followed her in to the afterlife.

Tremendous job building tension throughout. Great payoff at the end. The fear on the actresses face really drew me in. Kudos to performer and creators.

So, saying "hello" only drags their attention to the fact that you are now awake. *Someone didn't ask your permission to enter your home? then there is 99% chances they won't answer your hello in a nice way and could be a murderer.* Which is why, you don't ask "hello who is there?". Like, if I were a murderer and you say "hello anybody there?" I won't go "hey there it's just me, I uhh just broke in and I'm plotting to hurt u real bad, whats sup?".
Not to mention they're usually half naked with the lights off in the middle of the night, while investigating each room calling out "Hello" & "Is anybody there?"
Felt like I was watching the start of Act III from a full-length feature film. This was fun to watch. The actress playing Nikki, looks like she'll win an Oscar one day. And very beautiful too.

I'm just pointing out that, if they really were on a limited budget, they could play that last scene out in a smarter way, without using money for a bad cgi. Back in the days, those situation were very common in the film industry (having low budget) and the directors always tried to find smart and creative solution to money-related production problems.
Horror fillm characters always live in constant darkness (pun not intended). Also this: "i sense danger but I will stay here in bed and wait to be bitten."
It's always good to see Alter dropping movies at a fast rate honestly I enjoyed them all so far, this one had nice cam work in my opinion and the sound was top notch keep dropping heat and I'll be here to support 💪
I find myself fascinated by forests (Nat parks). Their beauty & tranquility is breathtaking. But, that being said... there are now too many scary things associated with them for me to want to venture in...
Instead of the creature lunging through the door when the shot changed to looking at her through the doorway that's when the door should have slammed shut since it did look like it was slowly closing while she was listening.
It gives a certain chill to suspect or ignore what has really happened to you in that wild forest but that chill is not enough to reach the threshold of pure terror ..

I'm starting to think that after years of exposure to violent, horror video games, very little scares me anymore, and certainly not darkness or creepy noises. With this movie, I can't get my head around why the group of people filming would allow a young woman to walk off on her own into a dark forest after the initial shoot. Also, jump scares have over the years become predictable. Otherwise, not bad, and well acted. JD

Agreed...takes a lot to scare me, but Alter succeeds where others have failed. The other night I was watching an Alter vid in the dark, in my car, on a ferry, in the Pacific Ocean and at the exact moment the women sees the demon and starts screaming her head off some guy suddenly flung my driver’s side door open. I was terrified. The “event” triggered a migraine headache that lasted 2 days. And for the guy who thought it was his car and opened mine instead, the look on his face was priceless. I think Alter scared him too!
So she was raped by the demon in the forest, drove home by the demon, and raped by the demon again in her home. Her amnesia of the whole incident is captured on the tape, even though her brain is trying to forget it all as a dream. Is this a metaphor for the scary thought that sometimes, sadly, your own family can abuse you, sexually and physically? I don't know, but it was very well made.

Hey UA-cam - my name is Andrew and I am the writer and director Blackwood - I am seriously late to this party! I can answer your questions or give some more details about the production. The idea for the film was to look at developing atmosphere and tension. We cast Danielle without audition as she was just so watchable. I knew I wanted to do something with sound as it is truly the unheralded icon of genre film making. The ending was a tough one to balance, and people were very split on which way to cut it, some people wanted a payoff after all the tension and others wanted a mystery. We had no money for the production so we chose to shoot it on an awesome location in a Redwood forest here in Victoria, Australia and then at the cinematographers house. The short film has had an option offer to turn into a feature and I have co-written a feature script that has had good reception with producers🙃 I am developing other projects but the short films I have made are ways to learn and grow as a filmmaker and storyteller. A masterclass in tension and economy. Considering how few words are spoken, we get quite a sense of the character, and certainly enough to feel a lot of sympathy regarding her awful and very convoluted fate. Most tragic boom mike blooper ever ...
The jumpscare was unneccessary. I'd have ended with an inhuman shadow creeping across the wall behind her as the thing slinks through the doorway. Never show it, just show that it is there...and is getting closer...
There are two things that are just naturally unsettling to me thick woods with low visible light and the ocean both because of the vast things that we don't know about what's inside them the ocean on a larger scale I've just discovered this channel and after seeing this it'd be really cool to see if they have or could do something with the natural horror of the ocean
Brilliant! I love it because it's an original storyline---great use of the senses from the actress ---nothing to see, but to LISTEN carefully. And that CGI monster was fantastic because of those wicked eyes. Wish we could have seen him a bit longer, actually. But I enjoyed the movie. Excellent job!
Is what got her at the end what she encountered in the woods? I mean I think it must be... but if that’s the case... then a creature stalked her in the woods and came up to her and attacked her.... somehow she got knocked out and wakes up at home in the same clothes, extremely dirty , doors wide open with even her car door open.... walks around her house and all of a sudden the same creature decides to attack her in her home? Doesn’t really make sense to me... and we’re we supposed to be able to read that note that she found? I could only read the first like 5 words... so not sure if I was supposed to read it lol I think the incredible tension that was built up throughout the short was lost on the ending. How I felt at the end of watching this was similar to how sex feels without an orgasm...interesting in the beginning, picked up pace and drew me in more with the sounds in the middle... but ended without the climax necessary for the big finale!!! Just my opinion though!! ✌️
I have a question- what happened to her when the monster appeared in the woods? How did she get back home alive? Why couldn't she remember anything? And what was the sound she was making in the audio! Sounded like someone or something tearing out her guts and she kept screaming. Yet she was alive and well at home
Great film! The forest was beautiful! Even though I saw the door moving, I wasn’t prepared for the jumpscare. The creature looked somewhat like a giant grasshopper. I hate grasshoppers!
Fantastic sounds and visuals, great acting. Would have made more sense though, if she discovered through this experience in the wood, that she had been the victim of an attack as a child. This birdlike creature didn't make much sense to me, neither did the fact that she woke up in her flat.
I think a better ending would have been to leave it at her hearing herself screaming and being attacked with no recall of what really happened. It be a horrible life to live not knowing what happened to you. Waiting for whatever it was to return and get you.
Why is everybody so obsessed with the idea of it just being a Forest monster there are so many different ways you could interpret this for instance, I think what she was hearing in the forest was a spaceship powering down and that thing was the ships pilot and it's mission is to abduct leave no trace and wipe the memories of the abducted to be put in a simulation of their home where is she woke up alone with a note basically saying they'll be more people to abduct wipe their memories put in there and study, but the studying was interrupted When the test subject used an item that they had on them when being abducted to remind them of their memory being wiped unbeknownst to the pilot thinking that it was just part of their clothing and ignored it until now because it has compromised the specimen and so they attack her like before. but that's just my interpretation of it, I'd like to see other people's ideas.
i'm not gonna lie, i jump-screamed when the creature lunged at her at the end. i bet my neighbors are like wtf haha. i knew something was going to happen behind her and then the door started to creak open. so i was expecting it, but it still got me.

Brilliant! I love it because it's an original storyline---great use of the senses from the actress ---nothing to see, but to LISTEN carefully. And that CGI monster was fantastic because of those wicked eyes. Wish we could have seen him a bit longer, actually. But I enjoyed the movie. Excellent job!

Is what got her at the end what she encountered in the woods? I mean I think it must be... but if that’s the case... then a creature stalked her in the woods and came up to her and attacked her.... somehow she got knocked out and wakes up at home in the same clothes, extremely dirty , doors wide open with even her car door open.... walks around her house and all of a sudden the same creature decides to attack her in her home? Doesn’t really make sense to me... and we’re we supposed to be able to read that note that she found? I could only read the first like 5 words... so not sure if I was supposed to read it lol I think the incredible tension that was built up throughout the short was lost on the ending. How I felt at the end of watching this was similar to how sex feels without an orgasm...interesting in the beginning, picked up pace and drew me in more with the sounds in the middle... but ended without the climax necessary for the big finale!!! Just my opinion though!! ✌️

I have a question- what happened to her when the monster appeared in the woods? How did she get back home alive? Why couldn't she remember anything? And what was the sound she was making in the audio! Sounded like someone or something tearing out her guts and she kept screaming. Yet she was alive and well at home

Great film! The forest was beautiful! Even though I saw the door moving, I wasn’t prepared for the jumpscare. The creature looked somewhat like a giant grasshopper. I hate grasshoppers!

Fantastic sounds and visuals, great acting. Would have made more sense though, if she discovered through this experience in the wood, that she had been the victim of an attack as a child. This birdlike creature didn't make much sense to me, neither did the fact that she woke up in her flat.
I think a better ending would have been to leave it at her hearing herself screaming and being attacked with no recall of what really happened. It be a horrible life to live not knowing what happened to you. Waiting for whatever it was to return and get you.
Why is everybody so obsessed with the idea of it just being a Forest monster there are so many different ways you could interpret this
for instance, I think what she was hearing in the forest was a spaceship powering down and that thing was the ships pilot and it's mission is to abduct leave no trace and wipe the memories of the abducted to be put in a simulation of their home where is she woke up alone with a note basically saying they'll be more people to abduct wipe their memories put in there and study, but the studying was interrupted
When the test subject used an item that they had on them when being abducted to remind them of their memory being wiped unbeknownst to the pilot thinking that it was just part of their clothing and ignored it until now because it has compromised the specimen and so they attack her like before.
but that's just my interpretation of it, I'd like to see other people's ideas.

i'm not gonna lie, i jump-screamed when the creature lunged at her at the end. i bet my neighbors are like wtf haha. i knew something was going to happen behind her and then the door started to creak open. so i was expecting it, but it still got me.
it cuts off at a weird point like i was thinking "omg what this is so scary ew omg creepy oh my god no what oh no ahhh... huh?" lmao

Ambient sound collecting's usually done alone so there's no interruptions. I agree she shouldn't have been left alone but,as Alter said, it's the life of a sound mixer
