Bears and sloths probably evolved to be smaller for the same reason as the canines. Big bodies need big food, no big food, small-body is a better option.

Judging by a skeleton I saw at the Natural History Museum of London, I can confidently say that a Mammoth could definitely reach the roof of a 2 story house with its trunk.
So maybe not as big, but close.
PS: as for bears getting smaller, it's because of lack of food. Bigger animals dying out means smaller food available. Doesn't matter how strong you are if you can't eat enough.

I do wish he'd included the Short-Faced Bear in his Ice Age Tier List. It was one of the most powerful predators in the Ice Age and might've been _the_ largest predatory mammal that ever walked the earth. To give you an idea of how big this thing was, the largest members were at least 5 feet tall. _At the shoulder._
On two legs, they were 11 feet, so they could've looked an elephant in the eye.
And they could weigh up to a _ton._
Since they were so big, they were probably able to intimidate other predators away from their kills and keep them for themselves. So considering those facts, I think it could've been S-Tier.

I think if she saw a cruise ship, by the time I'm making this comment she may have, she would never think an animal can compare. I was in the navy, so I talked to one of our boys who had been stationed on an aircraft carrier, and apparently a Disney cruise ship made the (notoriously unnecessarily large) aircraft carrier look small to him. The thing is more than a thousand feet long, if it was a building it would be twice as tall as most skyscrapers, so I don't think most people could compare an animal to that.

12:55 sad warning. So back in 5th grade I was going to school two hours early to finally get to join our schools before school game club and join my friends playing some dnd. I wasn’t able to hangout at friends house when I was younger because I lived very far away from everyone and my great grandmother who was raising me couldn’t take me for one reason or another. Well on the big day for me right after they explained how to make a character and where going to let me join them on a current story they where running. Well right as I had finished making my character the schools vice principal walked in and had me come to her office. I thought I was in trouble but instead she was letting me know that my grandmother was on her way to pick me up. Sadly because my uncle who lived next door was found passed away in the living room just this morning by her sister. I found out that he had apparently got up in the night for some water and had a stroke and collapsed and hit his head in the hard wood coffee table they had. Never could find the mood to play dnd after that. And I mean for years. Always brought up memories of him and how suddenly someone could be taken.

Sabre toothed cats were all about killing *quickly.* Wrestle that bison, deer, horse or whatever to the ground, then go straight for its exposed neck with those teeth.
Once you slash the jugular vein, windpipe, carotid artery etc...that animal's only got seconds. MINUTES at best.
Which means sabre tooths could enjoy far less risk of injury (animal can't kick & struggle when it's dead) and more time to eat in peace, before wolves or bears showed up.

17:30 depends which mammoths, there was a lot of different species of mammoth during the ice age. The most famous one is the woolly mammoth (they lived in N. America) and they weren't that big, as big as modern African elephants probably. While Steppe Mammoth (in eurasia) and Colombian Mammoth (also in the Americas) were HUGE.

my theory on bear size change has to do with the high food cost of hibernation. sleeping for 3 months is awesome for skipping the hardest part of the year but if you don't have enough fat storage you will die while you are in hibernation so it's harder for a bigger bear like that to build up enough fat stores. this is shown still today as the biggest bears polar bears don't hibernate while smaller black bears do

0:54 i was about to compliment you for benching 40 kg which is not little for a woman...
Oh well it got corrected to about 40 kg, which again is not little for a woman. Ive got a benchpress in my house and everyone who visits cant resist testing themselves. No woman who tried at my place has ever benched 40kg. Highest was 25 i think.
