Talens were my go to brand for a very long time when I was younger, gouache and oils mainly. The student ranges were so good that that it was only the differences in expensive pigments that made the difference. Alas I had no watercolour interest at all back then, due to the abysmal paints I had as a child, I did not want to repeat the experience. The gouache paints were wonderful and still work. I do wish now that I had bought watercolours. I wonder if anyone else had a bad experience with the horrid paints they us3d to give children. It’s interesting that Talens is still an interesting and good brand now……
How amazing that you got some really nice examples. I hope you can find some blues, you painting as usual are great.

I still remember a set of very cheap watercolours that I had as a child. I think we had it as part of a school subject. I specifically remember how chalky the paint cakes felt. I remember thinking, “This can’t be right!” I was not interested in art in school. It was not until after I left uni that I became interested in it. But it’s interesting that I had a sense for what felt like poor quality back when I was at school.

@@awatercolourist omg yes, so disappointing! I was mad about drawing and colour and absolutely knew those paints were awful. I think I collect paint now as a response to that!

Thank you so much! :D There's definitely room in my tin for a few more vintage paints...
Or I might get a few modern Rembrandt to round it out eventually. I really love knowing that your Talens gouache is still good, it makes me so happy! All of the paint ranges that I've heard of (gouache and watercolor) that are old enough to have gone through many iterations all garner the same feedback: they used to be so much better/more fun. An example of that is the W&N Designer Gouache, that used to have so many more colours and not all of them lightfast, with the intent of being used in advertising. Illustrations were made, reproduced via plate printing, and the original art was discarded. No one cared it if was lightfast or not. There used to be so many outrageously vibrant colors out there, it makes me sad that they are GONE :(

Great find! Pity that there is no pigment information, though.

I know! I'm really annoyed that I don't know XD Older paints have this terrible habit of not having the pigment info (or really vague pigment info) on the packaging. And very little documentation is available for these as it clearly all pre-dates the internet XD

Maybe you can reach out to Talens with pictures of the labels, I believe they have quite an archive of their paints.
