Vachama gocharame - Simharavam - Tyagaraja : Can your glory be put into words?

- Here is one of the rare composition of Saint Tyagaraja - vAchAmagOcharamE manasA in simhAravam rAgam.
“Is it possible, O mind, to describe the glory of Rama? Will words suffice and do justice”? O Rama, you who dispel the cry of the needy, you who love music, can your glory be put into words” - is the theme of the song.
Among the demons who troubled Vishwamitra’s fire sacrifice (yajna), you relegated Maricha to the ocean and chopped off the other’s (Subhahu) head!
Saint Tyagaraja says the animal ‘chamari’ which is very proud and dignified of it’s beautiful tail. Rama understood the mind of the animal, when a hunter’s arrow was approaching the chamari’s tail, the animal chose to lose her life than her honour and pride; Rama saw this. With immense compassion, he diverted the course of the arrow, saving the animal and its pride.
Saint Tyagaraja uses these episodes (I tried to use these aspects for the visual of the song) - one Rama is valiant and prowess is beyond words; the other where Rama is observant and compassionate, where his mercy is beyond words.
This song is uploaded in response to a request and hope it would also serve my purpose of posterity.
The audio has been restored and remastered from a live concert of June 1978. BMK is accompanied on the violin by Sri. M Chandrasekharan and on mrudangam by Sri. Tanjore Upendran.
What a pure bliss 🙏🙏🙏 My humble gratitude for uploading such gem sir. Surely we will be indebted for your selfless service.
Could anyone please clarify, why the same composition by others is sung in raga Kaikavasi? But this rendition in Simhavaram is undoubtedly so devine.
I would like to mention that this rendition is in SimhAravam Raga. The Kaikavashi version is rendered by other musicians, but Balamuralikrishna always sings this is in SimhAravam. SimhAravam scale is S R2 M2 P N2 S - S N2 P M2 R2 G2 R2 S, a janya of Raga Hemavati. Raga Kaikavashi is different and it is like this S R2 G2 M2 P D3 N3 S - S N3 P M2 G2 R2 S , a janya of Neethimathi. Please correct the title to mention " Vachamagocharame - SimhAravam - Tyagaraja".
You have cleared my doubt in detail. Thanks.

Meaning:
O Mind! Raama’s prowess is beyond description by words! Is it possible to describe it ? Didn’t he perform the unbelievable feat of consigning Maaricha to the distant ocean as well as sever on the way , the head of his companion Subaahu? To satisfy a rare request; of Seetha, Sri Raama aim an arrow to sever the tail of a Chaamaari deer, which resolved to lose her life rather than her honour and pride (Chaamara is made from the tail of these deer), covered her tail with her head. Touched by its self-respect, Raama recalled the arrow already speeding on its deadly mission and saved the deer. One who delights in music, Raama’s prowess is beyond words.
It is Vachama Gocharame Manasa meaning something beyond mind and words. It is not vacha agocharame like someone mentioned. Dr BMK is an ultimate authority on lyrics. Please do not challenge him.
The manner in which Shri Balamuralikrishna sir expresses the word “prana” in the charanam is divine. I can hear this rendition 1000 times and still find something new the 1001st time.
Absolutely agree a divine rendition
What a gem by the greatest ever Musician the World has ever seen... and Tanjore Upendran Sir's mridangam... simply stunning and gels so beautifully with the song..... great one indeed... thanks a million again sir
Again, another gem from BMK and from Murthy Sir. I don't know how to express my profound gratitude to you.
When it comes to presentation of bhavam, no one can beat BMK. The way he sings 'varnimpa tharame' is not only different but also clearly states that purpose of the selection of this raga by St Thyagaraja to express the greatness of Rama mahima.
I felt that the rendering of the same composition by other artists is rather flat or bland.
The expression of exclamation in the anu pallavi when he talks about Subahu is just superb.
Thank you Murthy garu.
Sir, Thanks for sharing your reflections and appreciate your observed listening.
In one of the discussions, BMK was mentioning about his approach of listening. When he was teaching a kriti to a very young student, the sangati taught by him was sung in a to totally different way by the student. BMK listened to this, and observed it's speciality and appreciated the student for bringing out something new...
With such an approach and ability, it is no wonder that he renders a kriti, mirroring the vision of it's composer.
Dear Murthy Garu,
In general, I have observed that some of the compositions sung by BMK are so different and hence make a big difference in bringing out the mood of the composer. I have been a great admirer of his music in that regard. There are some compositions I have been desperately looking for elaborations by BMK.
I would be ever grateful to you if you have these elaborations with you and could upload them sometime in near future. I am giving the list below.
1. E dari sancarinturaa - Sruthiranjani
2. Any Ganamoorthy elaboration. His own cpmposition 'Pahi Jagadhiswara' is fine too.
3. Devi Brova Samayamide - Chintamani
4. Any Suvarnangi elaboration
Thank you Sir.
Pranams - Krishna
Thanks for your comments. Let me look for the renditions that you have mentioned.
Excellent
Thank you very much Murthy sir............I had heard this composition long back, may be in Tyagaraja festival when master was secretary...............Thanking once again sir.............
It is a bliss to listen to Vid BMK ! Even the mrdangam suits so much each time. Thank you so much for this upload.
Dear Murthy Garu
I heard in one of his introductions, Dr bmk mentioning the name of the RAGA as SIMHAARAVAM. సింహరావం. Did I wrongly hear it? Pl clarify 🙏
Need to check the nuanced difference. Perhaps you may kindly check the differences and let us know. Thanks.
No,sir. This aagam is called kaikavasi and is the janyaragam of the vivaadi ragam Neethimathi.
Dr BMK mentions the raga as simhAravam, 22:10
