But i never try that last setting, i dont wanna destroy my Setup or Rack if something going wrong ^^, So there are possibilities choose on...for people who like digital modular more than relalife cable patching, should by the ES-8/4/3. A Eurorack Modularsystem will make u poor and depressiv. Testing analog outputs for control voltage compatibility: motu.com/techsupport/technotes/testing-analog-outputs-for-control-voltage-compatibility
It might also be worth mentioning that if you are on Windows PC you have to use ASIO4all to aggregate sound cards and it only allows 8 channels so if you have a 16 channel and you wish to use both (on Windows) you have to sacrifice 8 channels ( I found out the hard way)
I have been sleeping on the Expert Sleepers ES8... pun intended ... but also... damn... This is a ridiculously useful module if you have both hardware modules and VCV.
great video! Unfortunately I dont have a modular but I think I will try sequencing VCV Rack with my Digitakt. sounds a like a lot of fun for modular with the trig conditions etc
You know what would be really great? Something like this that would let you use VST/AU plugins to process audio from hardware synths.. So you could push the FX send/return from your hardware mixer into say Raum reverb or some other chain of effects from NI or others.
I just saw that you can do this. I was gonna get some hardware FX units to add effects to my hardware synth and use as fx send/return on my mixer.. But now I'll just get this and be able to add all the software effects I have to any of my hardware synths :D
God this would allow you to not worry about building up enough adsr lfos and utilities (which are important and sometimes awesome when done right) and focus on buying the effects that you want. Makes the whole thing seem less dawnting but I'll still go back and grab hard ware utilities later.
I'm confused yet still learning. At 9:22 you have: 1.)input from softtube going to input of "Multiple". Why is an output not going to the input of "Multiple"? Like how does an input push another input?
What a great video! I'm moving my first steps in the word of integrating modular and digital. I have a Motu Ultralite Mk4 for this purpose, but I didn't start yet: I heard that many people use special "floating ring" cables (TRS to TS with the ring disconnected), to connect the DC coupled interface to their Eurorack modules, but I noticed you use normal TS "mono" patch cables, even with your Motu. Have you ever deepened that topic? I'm still confused if they are necessary or not!
@@loopop I'm wandering if an insert cable (modified with 3.5mm TSs outputs instead 6.3mm ones) can give (in addition to the same result in the mono out connected to the tip) also the utility of an inverted signal on the other output connected to the ring. Theoretically it will. I must give a try :)
Two questions. 1) can we set up some kind of automatic trigger. When loopop reviews something, it automatically deducts my bank account and ships the gear to me? 2) I believe Ableton Live only lets you talk to one audio interface. So if I want to keep my other gear wired in (mics, synths, monitors), while simultaneously using CV tools, etc, then sound card with optical to ES-3 would be a way to accomplish this?
Its like a new world just opened up for me. I don't own Modular, I am not planning to jump down that rabbit hole, but I do have several semi-modulars including the Arturia MiniBrute 2S you are using in this video. I've always used MIDI - but have pre-MIDI legacy synths. Plus I have been using Motu Interfaces for ever - and never knew about "DC-Coupling" I have 828ES and 8PRE-ES - and the manuals don't even mention it - MOTU website does - 8 DC Outputs each only. I got onto this because Synthtopia had an article about Spektro-Audio CV toolkit today. (Do I need it?) And that sent me searching. Motu Volta software does not seem to be around any more - and was for MAC only, and $$$ anyway. Now I have a lot of new things to learn! Fascinating.
Thanks for an excellent video a really big eye opener... I have Behringer Neutron and Arturia mini brute 2s and are in doubt what Eurorack modules I want to start with, no I know... Thanks a lot
You should do a vid on how to integrate further in terms of how to add the extra virtual HP to your rack system. It's really cool how you can show the full patch virtual or hardware, cause that makes sense if you're combining video production's potential with hardware/software hybridization like this. Like... How did you set this up so well?
Nice demo and very clearly explained. I’m new to modular (but not to music production) and think VCV Rack really has the potential to draw people in that didn’t want to commit to hardware. My experience of Theramin players numbers yourself so you are, by default, my Hendrix. ;)
Dude, love your videos. This could use a new update now that VCV rack is even more capable with CV-to-MIDI (including CV-to-CC) capabilities. Something like pairing this with a Novation Peak could possibly create some really interesting results. Worth looking into I think. The downside would be having to forward stuff from CCs to NRPNs because vcvrack currently doesn't handle nrpns on its own, and well ranges are a mess too. But I guess MIDI-OX or MIDI Pipe could be a solution for that. Something I myself am looking into. #MakeEverythingModular? heh kinda. I guess there are module opportunities there if people want to facilitate that too.
I was saving for the BitBox ( love the switchable firmware), and now I want that ES-8 ! Your channel will be the end of me...You should look at Oscillot by MaxForCats in Ableton. Less CPU intensive, less shiny and no popular eurorack recreation but very intuitive and powerfull. Thanks for this episode, looking forward for a new one (as my banker) !
I would get an ES-8 but I don’t have eurorack - I want it to connect VCV Rack to my Moog semi modular gear. So I’d need a 8hp case which doesn’t seem to exist. Another option perhaps is a Zoia Euroburo, which has 4 in - 4 out that I gather would link hardware and software.
I could not find the audio Interface ES-8 in VCVrack, shown in your video at 1:47, Would you happen to have a link to it? Thank you for your help here, regards.
Loopop, I'm full of questions lately, but am taking my first Eurorack steps in my defense! My Q here (I can't find this video in my Patreon archive) is, are the ES-8 and MOTU still the best games in town for bridging in this way, 2 years on? I am on the verge with the ES-8 but also eyeing the ES-9 and FH-2 with some confusion... And then just discovered the S.B.G in your CV to MIDI tutorial! Daunting. Appreciate any quick pointers or tips for most flexible first steps. Probably depends on what I am trying to achieve.
Thanks for your support! MOTU never was the only game in town, there are quite a few other companies with DC coupled outs. ES-8 and ES-9 indeed are the only ones to my knowledge with DC coupled inputs. SBG is for audio and FH-2 MIDI to CV
Thanks! You may not need physical modules at all :) that said I think what limits me most about VCV is lack of physical controls (you can map midi controllers to parameters that have cv in but not all do) - so I would go for modules that are knob/slider heavy (for example Elements or Stages from Mutable have a lot of hands on control options - assuming those modules interest you). Or modules that don’t exist in VCV or analog modules that may not behave or sound the same, of course
That's what I thought! For now I went for a Theremin A178, pedal input A177 and Mutable Instruments Ears. Next is a Midi Thing. I intend to build my own Solenoid and Servo, since Bastl's are somewhat expensive and limited. Though all of this fills up the ES-8 quite quickly.
Have you ever used the ES-8 as an audio out/in without the MOTU? I own one, I love the functionality, but sending audio out, into say the Morphagene, and back to the ES-8 seems to color the sound. While it isn't horrible, it is a noticeable difference in the audio from a synth. I do plan on connecting it via ADAT to a MOTU interface similar to this one, but I was not sure if the ES-8 really was for input / out voltages, rather than audio. Any thoughts? I really do appreciate all of your videos you have helped me tremendously.
Hi Ziv, I truly enjoy your videos, I have learned a lot of them. I wonder why you haven't mentioned in this one an option like using Reaktor which has dedicated blocks for this very purpose. I'm using them through REM's BabyFace pro interface, which is not DC coupled but sports ADAT in and out that connect with Expert Sleepers ES-3, 6 and 7. I'm sure that VCV and MOTU interface is a cheaper solution but not necessarily better. Anyway, it's less messy with only two optical cables for 8 inputs and 8 outputs.
Hey Radu, thanks for your comment - no particular reason other than the video would be much longer - Reaktor is awesome - I’ll probably do a decidated video about it soon
Thank you again for this great video. This might not pertain to this video, but do you think sending Audio from Bitwig (say Sample Libraries sampled from original instruments & Key Mapped Multi Layers) to External CV Modules, using a DC coupled Audio interface, ES-9, with multiple ins and outs, would really give these VST type instruments a more analog, rich sounding tone, like a well designed synthesizer, or staying ITB is just as good. I am just thinking of the computer, daw as a big Digital Data(infinite storage) center, but it being controlled by CV, to give it a bigger and complex sound. I hope that makes sense, something like the older Emu samplers would give us back some decades ago. Thank You!
Could you use the 1010 Music Blackbox with these virtual racks? Would be cool if it works and expand the setup with semi modular or Eurorack over time with Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1 Blackbox, Moog Minitaur, Make Noise O-Coast, etc
the best way of mixing both is just usin an external mixer a Sync Gen from innerclock or similar system for sync all your hardware and your go lot cheaper, (no interchanganble cv signal but for what the hell do you want that?), if you monitor through your DSP sound card no latency and all is OK, that´s my advise, cheers
For this to even make sense to me you first of all need to have a computer (which i don't have in my studio) and secondly you would have to have an OLED screen sitting on top of your physical eurorack so that the virtual modules aren't off on some screen somewhere in the room. The whole idea of owning a physical eurorack is that it's tactile and hands on. This is exactly the reason why i buy actual synths instead of just having a computer with software. Two completely different things. Also, a physical eurorack or synth is gorgeous to look at. It peaks your interest in ways a virtual "screen" could never do. If you're a techie or just enjoy technology in general, having cool looking analog synths in your room is just awesome.
Krister Nielsen As I say in the clip, there’s nothing like the sensation of working with physical hardware - and yes, a computer nearby is a prerequisite. This is a compromise. Sure eurorack is nice to look at but this approach can save you thousands of dollars on modules that may end up just that - a pretty and expensive picture. But yes, in a perfect world where cost is irrelevant, give me all hardware any day
Could one use, say, the inputs and outputs on a Scarlett 18i20 to create the same virtualhardware patching? Or is there something special about the ES-8 over normal interfaces?
ES-8 is why I got into modular. Only I use Audulus to make my own modules. Edit: I am curious, have you tried Audulus? You didn’t mention it in the laundry list of digital-modular software.
Can someone tell me... Can vcv rack be used as an (vst?) instrument inside a daw (Studio One) on the same daw pc? Or is it better to have vcv running on a separate pc? Thanks
It can't currently be used as a VST - it's only standalone software. There are bridge plans for the future and workarounds as well but I haven't studied that - please check the VCV Rack group on facebook - plenty of people have tips for that there
Quite inspiring! So if after purchasing an ES-8 and a rack there would be money left for only one module, what would it be? Considering all there is in VCV Rack + Audulus?
Alexis Crête-Lafrenière now I need to make another clip - the second most must have module ;) probably the one you like in VCV. but need the physical controls, or unique sound, or blinky lights ;)
FilchMedia thanks! I use a white marker I bought from a local art store - I haven’t tried white out but I imagine it would start leaving crumbs quickly. Mine is called “Leto paint marker” and works quite nicely - not sure if it’s a known brand or anything and careful when you shake it - keep the cap on or wear white clothes ;)
Yah, I didn't think whiteout would have been the best choice either over time, which is why I was asking. A paint marker sounds obvious now. Thanks for info!
Hi, thanks for this video, it’s very helpful... I’m thinking about buying the ES-9 and I would like to sai you a question: I see that it’s possibile to use 2 audio devices simoultaneously in VCV Rack... is it possibile in Ableton Live too on MacOS 11, without creating an aggregate device? Or, of not, at least is it possibile to use my main soundcard (MOTU 896) for sound and the ES-9 for MIDI and CV? Would Ableton “CV tools” recognize the ES-9 as a CV output even if in the Live preferences the MOTU is selected as sound source for input and output? Thank you very much!
@@dreamspyiceland I wrote directly at Expert Sleepers support, and they answered me that no, it’s not possible and you need to make an aggregate device.
just an idea: How could a BeagleBoneBlack board with a 7"-Touchscreen be integrated as a computer in a portable Eurorack (mounting, power supply, USB I/O)?
Nice...looking into an old MOTU 828 mk1(much cheaper than expert sleepers ...) if I understand it will only provide DV coupled outputs , not inputs correct ? That would be fine as I only intend to send modulation from Ableton CVTools to my Eurorack....the thing is : can I use two audio interfaces simultaneously in Ableton? My other synths and drum machines would be recorded multitrack through my interface Allen and Heath QU-16 interface.
awesome...watched this video earlier but now, as I looking into the ES-8, comes in very handy... but: if already having an audio interface (Qu-16 Allen and Heath), what DAW can manage handling two interfaces simultaneously ? Or the Es-8 would work “separately” in such a situation?
You sir are awesome! I have been trying to figure this out for the longest adn now I knwo what to do. Quick question how do you decide beterrn ES-3,ES-6 and ES-8? Is it the same thing with more i/o?
Shrey Sharma thanks! I think you start with the ES-8 and expand it with the ES-5/6 but I suggest you email expert sleepers to get advice for your particular needs. Enjoy!
ES-8 = ES-3 + ES-6 + USB. I.e. you need optical adat cable to the ES-3, and optical adat cable from ES-6, into any audio interface that has ADAT IO. The ES-8 however is a fully stand-alone audio interface...
I just want to make sure I understand about the floating ring cables. Those are only needed if using the MOTU or another actual interface, right? Not needed if you’re using the ES-8?
thanks for this great vid. Two queries: if in your example setup, the MOTA 8A is the alternative to the ES-8, why are the outputs from the 8A going into the ES-8...isn't the point that the 8A outputs can be used to send CV directly the modular modules? (I only ask as otherwise I have missed or misunderstood something). Also, relating to the comparison between the 8A and the Ultralite MK4 - are you saying the MK4's input are NOT DC coupled, but the 8A's are? (I looked on the specs sheets on MOTU's products pages but it didn't reference DC coupling on either set of inputs, just on each interface's outputs. Cheers in advance.
Thanks! Only the outputs on the MOTUs are DC coupled. Re connecting motu to es8 you’ll have to point me to where I did that in the video - that’s from a while ago. It’s not necessary though
@@loopop wow, thanks fro lightning fast reply! around 13:30 is where it shows outputs from 8A going into ES-8, but thanks for clarifying that these could go straight into CV inputs of the module synths directly. Sorry, but more questions arise then - do the analogue inputs on the interface need to be DC coupled if taking audio i.e. having DC coupled inputs is only necessary if one wants to pass CV back into the digital domain e.g. to my DAW or one of the software products this video references? Also, if the inputs do NOT have to be DC coupled (for audio) is it just about having sufficient headroom for the hot Eurorack signals?
Is there a consensus now for Eurorack to VCV Rack what is the best ES-9 or the Motu 8A? I'm in need now and after reading and watching I don't know where to go. Is latency and issue with both? do both provide seamless audio and CV back and forth between VCV rack and hardware Eurorack? Seems both of these had some isssues.. Help!
So, in a Motu traveler MK3 I can send cv signal though the input analog and send to the make noise 0 coast from the output analog with a ring floating cable. Is that right? Sorry I don’t know if I understand properly...

So there are possibilities choose on...for people who like digital modular more than relalife cable patching, should by the ES-8/4/3. A Eurorack Modularsystem will make u poor and depressiv.

It might also be worth mentioning that if you are on Windows PC you have to use ASIO4all to aggregate sound cards and it only allows 8 channels so if you have a 16 channel and you wish to use both (on Windows) you have to sacrifice 8 channels ( I found out the hard way)
Would you be able to do a video on how to integrate the Minibrute 2s with Bitwig?
Nice demo!! ES8 is on my list!
Nice. The es8 is pretty genius
Unifono2012 thanks!
too cool! very useful showing how to mix the mini brute 2s with VCV rack software and computer
I have been sleeping on the Expert Sleepers ES8... pun intended ... but also... damn... This is a ridiculously useful module if you have both hardware modules and VCV.
Great as usual … thanks again!
great video! Unfortunately I dont have a modular but I think I will try sequencing VCV Rack with my Digitakt. sounds a like a lot of fun for modular with the trig conditions etc
Thanks and indeed!
But now I'll just get this and be able to add all the software effects I have to any of my hardware synths :D
very helpful video, thanks!
btw did you know that in vsv all cables are stacking cables so you don't need all these mults?
cellbiol thanks! Crap man now I do
great! I bought a expert sleepers es-8! could you make also a video about ableton cv tools?
Perhaps in the future!
This was a very good presentation.
thanks!
God this would allow you to not worry about building up enough adsr lfos and utilities (which are important and sometimes awesome when done right) and focus on buying the effects that you want. Makes the whole thing seem less dawnting but I'll still go back and grab hard ware utilities later.
looking forward to your es-9 review
Thanks! I don't think I'll make one.. but I'll try to cover a bit more of it next modular video
Great video!
ES-8 is still an underrated module.
I'm confused yet still learning.
At 9:22 you have:
1.)input from softtube going to input of "Multiple".
Motu say they are necessary - I added a comment in the description to that effect as well. I works but can be harmful over time I’m told
Ace. I need to integrate VCV Rack with my new hardware modular system.
Thanks! The magic of video editing :)
Nice demo and very clearly explained. I’m new to modular (but not to music production) and think VCV Rack really has the potential to draw people in that didn’t want to commit to hardware. My experience of Theramin players numbers yourself so you are, by default, my Hendrix. ;)
TheVimFuego thanks!!
Im happy with my N.I. Komplete Audio 6 rmk 2 with dc coupled.
Thanks for this i was wondering lately how i can control my VCV with software and hardware
16:47 I like that sound
Very helpful, thanks!
That's the standard audio interface module in VCV - they just changed how it looks - just look for "Audio 8"
loopop thanks!👍
Excellent tutorial and showcase for this hybrid setup. But now my question is: which physical modules make sense to add to VCVrack (on a budget)?
Cool! Love the theramin! Yes, you run out of jacks quickly, especially inputs, but ES have an expander that gives you 8 more
Have you ever used the ES-8 as an audio out/in without the MOTU? I own one, I love the functionality, but sending audio out, into say the Morphagene, and back to the ES-8 seems to color the sound. While it isn't horrible, it is a noticeable difference in the audio from a synth. I do plan on connecting it via ADAT to a MOTU interface similar to this one, but I was not sure if the ES-8 really was for input / out voltages, rather than audio. Any thoughts? I really do appreciate all of your videos you have helped me tremendously.
Thanks very much! ES-8 certainly works for audio but honestly I've not done a thorough A/B comparison of its converters to those on the MOTU
Thank you very much!
This is awesome!
Wow this looks like a really great setup but is it still relevant 6 years later? Is there a better way now to get into modular and bridge vcv rack?
The principles are the same; both expert sleepers and other companies have introduced newer/competing products with more ports/features
Try connecting the es8 to the MOTU via optical/ADAT
Would be cool if it works and expand the setup with semi modular or Eurorack over time with Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1 Blackbox, Moog Minitaur, Make Noise O-Coast, etc
where to get these cables?
the best way of mixing both is just usin an external mixer a Sync Gen from innerclock or similar system for sync all your hardware and your go lot cheaper, (no interchanganble cv signal but for what the hell do you want that?), if you monitor through your DSP sound card no latency and all is OK, that´s my advise, cheers
Great video! Any news on whether or not VCV Rack supports multi touch screen monitor usage?
The Disting Mk4 also works well.
Disting costs a lot less than es8 I think.
How would you go about this? Disting doesn't ha e usb
Can someone tell me... Can vcv rack be used as an (vst?) instrument inside a daw (Studio One) on the same daw pc? Or is it better to have vcv running on a separate pc? Thanks
It can't currently be used as a VST - it's only standalone software. There are bridge plans for the future and workarounds as well but I haven't studied that - please check the VCV Rack group on facebook - plenty of people have tips for that there
Thanks!
But you could still have them running on the same computer.
that would be awesome to have the ability to use it from a DAW like Ableton to give virtual modular to laptop Ableton rigs.
They just added this in VCV Rack 0.6.0.
Hello, great video about es-8, ultra clear. Do you believe it's possible to pilot Touchdesigner with expert-sleepers CV ?
fascinating
Quite inspiring! So if after purchasing an ES-8 and a rack there would be money left for only one module, what would it be? Considering all there is in VCV Rack + Audulus?
Alexis Crête-Lafrenière now I need to make another clip - the second most must have module ;) probably the one you like in VCV. but need the physical controls, or unique sound, or blinky lights ;)
I like your method of cable labeling with the white dots vs bulky sticky labels from a label maker. Is that just whiteout or something else?
FilchMedia thanks! I use a white marker I bought from a local art store - I haven’t tried white out but I imagine it would start leaving crumbs quickly. Mine is called “Leto paint marker” and works quite nicely - not sure if it’s a known brand or anything and careful when you shake it - keep the cap on or wear white clothes ;)
Yah, I didn't think whiteout would have been the best choice either over time, which is why I was asking. A paint marker sounds obvious now. Thanks for info!
Another question:
Do the virtual eurorack plug ins work with Reason?
Hi, thanks for this video, it’s very helpful... I’m thinking about buying the ES-9 and I would like to sai you a question:
I see that it’s possibile to use 2 audio devices simoultaneously in VCV Rack... is it possibile in Ableton Live too on MacOS 11, without creating an aggregate device? Or, of not, at least is it possibile to use my main soundcard (MOTU 896) for sound and the ES-9 for MIDI and CV? Would Ableton “CV tools” recognize the ES-9 as a CV output even if in the Live preferences the MOTU is selected as sound source for input and output?
Thank you very much!
+1 on that question.
Nice...looking into an old MOTU 828 mk1(much cheaper than expert sleepers ...)
if I understand it will only provide DV coupled outputs , not inputs correct ? That would be fine as I only intend to send modulation from Ableton CVTools to my Eurorack....the thing is : can I use two audio interfaces simultaneously in Ableton? My other synths and drum machines would be recorded multitrack through my interface Allen and Heath QU-16 interface.
awesome...watched this video earlier but now, as I looking into the ES-8, comes in very handy... but: if already having an audio interface (Qu-16 Allen and Heath), what DAW can manage handling two interfaces simultaneously ? Or the Es-8 would work “separately” in such a situation?
on a Mac you can configure an aggregate device with two interfaces. ES also have output extension modules for regular interfaces.
loopop thank you
You sir are awesome!
I think I will go for the ES3 + ES6 cheaper, need to swap my audio interface for one that supports ADAT, more inputs, more power
I wonder if an older audio interface like the M-Audio Delta 66 would work ?
I just want to make sure I understand about the floating ring cables. Those are only needed if using the MOTU or another actual interface, right? Not needed if you’re using the ES-8?
Matt Ceppaglia correct
thanks for this great vid.
Help!
Great video and hugely useful. How did you do the video screen insert for the virtual devices? Very effective.
Thanks! Just an overlay layer in Premiere
So, in a Motu traveler MK3 I can send cv signal though the input analog and send to the make noise 0 coast from the output analog with a ring floating cable. Is that right? Sorry I don’t know if I understand properly...
