Here's what this clip is about: Going modular is a lot of fun but can get very expensive, very fast. But there's a way put together a hybrid modular synth in a gradual, focused way, by only getting the modules you need in hardware form, and integrating others using software.
After experimenting a lot with creating a hybrid VCV/Eurorack - I can say it works really nicely. If anyone asks me what's my one must have Eurorack module, it's definitely one which will let you bridge between virtual modules and real ones.
In this video I review the ES-8 from Expert Sleepers and the 8A from MOTU, check out their pros and cons, and how well they integrate with virtual eurorack from VCV, Softube and other software.
TRS CABLE NOTE: A note regarding the cable I mentioned around 14:25 - Thanks to Andrew from Expert Sleepers for this comment:
DUAL INTERFACE NOTE: Using two interfaces doesn't work properly on Windows and isn't officially supported for Mac by VCV, however, they've announced v2 will contain dual interface support

In general special cables are recommended when using a DC-coupled audio interface as a source of CVs. Most audio interfaces have balanced outputs (on TRS ('stereo') jacks or XLRs), while synth CV inputs are unbalanced (usually on TS ('mono') jacks or minijacks). If you use a regular stereo or mono jack lead, you'll be shorting out one of the balanced output signals (usually the R (ring) to the S (shield)). While this probably wouldn't be a problem for normal audio use, when outputting the sustained voltages that are useful as CVs you risk damaging the interface hardware.

Excellent video - I have an Expert Sleepers ES4 and an older Motu interface (hybrid ultralite mk3 with S/PDIF connection - for some reason, never got the ES4 to work with my old M-Audio interface) - never really got the Silent Way software and have been wondering how (and if) the module would work with the VCV Rack, a program that has literally changed my life, absolutely amazing! Your video has made the point quite clear - thanks a million for sharing it!
Hey man, great quality videos! Thanks for being so professional, keep it up.
You are my hero, Loopop! I have spent enough on my hardware. Time to find it all some software. Thanks.
I rarely comment on anything but I have to say that this is one of the best eurorack/modular tutorials I’ve seen. I have watched and read about this subject exhaustively. Good work! I look forward to more content from you!
J Mac thanks and I appreciate you taking the time to write this ;)
I have spent 2 days searching for answers to this. I only got half answers until the first minute of your video. THANK YOU. I watch a lot of your videos, you do great work.
Oh no! More expense. I thought I had my modular rig pretty much sorted but I have space and the es8 looks great. Another great video. Thank you.
Brilliant, very necessary video! THANK you for posting this!!
Would love to hear your "updated" thoughts on the es-9
This is exactly what I’ve done and it works brilliantly.
Nice demo!! ES8 is on my list!
This is so exciting. Combing this with max for live and DIY modules makes it possible to make such interesting patches without selling your car.
+1 for the ES-8. Bitwig studio can also send CV via the ES-8 to your modular. So that's a great way to get LFO and random CV into your modular without needing to buy a load of CV generating modules straight away.
This is really one of the best modules to buy first, I recently bought the ES-3 and I love it.
I was thinking of the ES-3 to go with my Saffire Pro 26 audio interface. Can you still get audio out to the modular usinf es3 or do you need an es-8?
@@onelittleatlas5645 I don't use them to get audio out. I like to use a mixing desk and RME interface for that.
In regard to the V/Oct tracking, MOTU's VOLTA software has an awesome calibration system which also gives you the ability to integrate the software with different systems at the same time, really nice feature.
god bless you!!!!! i didnt know Expert Sleepers Es-8, and it's really the best module to link VCV Rack to a eurorack modular, thank you very much!!!!
Riccardo Guarino you’re welcome, my pleasure!
Wow so cool the rabbit hole is huge
too cool! very useful showing how to mix the mini brute 2s with VCV rack software and computer
Yes going back and forward is very exciting
This might be the coolest (synth) thing I’ve ever seen in my life
No waaaaay. I had literally just talked myself OUT of getting the ES-8 today, telling myself the capabilities of the MiniBrute 2S I ordered would be enough for a long while. Then you go and release this video. Well done, now I want one more than ever.
Also worth noting, the ES-8 and MOTU integrate really nicely with the Reason DAW's CV based Rack environment, especially with two recent Rack Extension releases.
I think getting the Minibrute 2s and a few modules should keep one busy for a while.
I was looking into integrating this with Reason since it is what I use. Which two extensions you meant? Thanks.
Great video!
Fantastic overview, I would like to point out that those who already have audio interfaces with ADAT Lightpipe, Expert Sleepers has another cv sound card ES-3 mk4 listed for 199$ on Modulargrid and it provides 8 cv outputs. Paired with ES-6 mk2 which offers 8 inputs listed for 155$.
so is that a better way to connect the two? adat?
@@HenricWallmark if you already have an audio interface with an ADAT connection then it is a more economic solution.
@@gunnarwaage4343 cool, thank you!
This was a very good presentation.
thanks!
Great as usual … thanks again!
If you use an audio interface that supports DC offset you can use their outputs as CV outputs for your modular setup as well. The PreSonus Studio 24C is a cheap high quality option.
valuable tutorial for those of us who unable to afford complete modular hardware. Thank you
Ammanuel Tekeste yes that was the purpose, thanks for the comment
Re: scopes. While checking Amazon (other retailers are available) for supplies to make some suitable cables for my AC coupled interface, I came across some really small scopes and scope kits that look like they'd fit in a rack. With a little modification, of course. Only about £20.
And I was feeling like the coolest kid in the room getting my ES-8 / ES-3 Reaktor Blocks hybrid going. It really is the coolest thing ever!
I especially like using it as a mixing color/texture box. Very easy to send audio tracks/samples into say Verbos Amplitude and Tone Controller, XAOC Belgrad, Optomix, Morphagene, or a Retro Mechanical Labs GPI connected to many flavors of distortion/saturation boxes, some of which have CV control. Taking say a kick (or bass line) from an Ableton drum rack into a Zvex Mastotron while playing with its sub switch and tone knob = massive bass/punch/analog glow. So you also get a powerful reamp/mixing color box setup in addition to a Swiss Army knife of control voltages (you may not yet own in your hardware) to tickle your modules with. Add to that super tight sync that allows you to run your modular alongside your daw with the simplicity and ease of a VST....powerful.
Also sending sections of your rhythm tracks to say the Dynmc input on the DYNAMIX to create new rhythms from modular sounds or samples is so easy. It’s really THE best conduit to fluidly integrate all the joys of modular with your DAW production process.
Is the ES-8 able to accept audio line level back into your daw? Thanks.
Norman Notes Yes I believe so. Andrew at Expert Sleepers explained to me that it’s just a D.C. coupled audio interface. You can also get inputs from the ADAT.
great video! Unfortunately I dont have a modular but I think I will try sequencing VCV Rack with my Digitakt. sounds a like a lot of fun for modular with the trig conditions etc
Thanks and indeed!
Very helpful, thanks!
looking forward to your es-9 review
Thanks! I don't think I'll make one.. but I'll try to cover a bit more of it next modular video
Nice. The es8 is pretty genius
Unifono2012 thanks!
PLEASE do a review of the es-9
VCV Rack has limited functionality on my late 2014 Mac Mini., but MiRack (VCV Rack for iOS), works great on my iPad.
The ES-8 is class compliant, so should work with my iPad.
Would be great to use all the great iOS sequencers with my eurorack too.
The Polyend Poly 2, is a nice option for $350, that includes MIDI I/O and usb in.
Manikin Electronic CV-DAC-8 is an 8-channel audio/CV USB interface eurorack module. It sends both CV and audio signals through two sets of outputs, for $400.
Thanks for an excellent video a really big eye opener... I have Behringer Neutron and Arturia mini brute 2s and are in doubt what Eurorack modules I want to start with, no I know...
Thanks a lot
This is awesome!
Awesome!
What should be mentioned.
If you use a DC-Coupled Audio Interface to transmit CV signals you will need a special cable to avoid damaging the interface.
A floating ring cable.
Thanks very much! and yes, thank you very much for the floating ring cable comment. I added a card talking about this at the right point in the video, as well as to the description
But do you need a TRS to TS cable out of the audio interface? You seem to use only TS to TS (6,3 to 3,5) cable. Have you noticed any problems with the CV signal sent ? Looking to buy a DC coupled audio interface but I am a bit confused about the cables I should use. Thank you for the demo !
Thank you very much!
you are a theremin maestro now mate
they got to start making eurorackable 84 hp monitors
Yeah! Touchscreen ones with a hardware panel of dccoupled ins and outs. I can virtually see myself patching a hardware module into a slim module to left of the screen and dragging a virtual patch cable from the side of the screen and into a vcvrack module. Woah! I wish I had the skills to do it 😂
Touch monitor with Pen and surface puck support would be nice :)
You deserve a commission for the ES-8 I am about to purchase.
Im happy with my N.I. Komplete Audio 6 rmk 2 with dc coupled.
Dude, love your videos. This could use a new update now that VCV rack is even more capable with CV-to-MIDI (including CV-to-CC) capabilities. Something like pairing this with a Novation Peak could possibly create some really interesting results. Worth looking into I think. The downside would be having to forward stuff from CCs to NRPNs because vcvrack currently doesn't handle nrpns on its own, and well ranges are a mess too. But I guess MIDI-OX or MIDI Pipe could be a solution for that. Something I myself am looking into. #MakeEverythingModular? heh kinda.
I guess there are module opportunities there if people want to facilitate that too.
Would you be able to do a video on how to integrate the Minibrute 2s with Bitwig?
Thanks for this i was wondering lately how i can control my VCV with software and hardware
merci pour cette vidéo _ bravo
Great video! Any news on whether or not VCV Rack supports multi touch screen monitor usage?
Just thought I'd add an development. Presonus just announced that their new series of USB C interfaces (minus the Studio 24C) have DC Coupled outputs.
These seem to be a bit more competitively priced than Motus. Not commenting on the relative quality - I've not worked with either but options are always good!
Nice that this seems to be catching on. Modular synthesists of the world rejoice!
fascinating
very helpful video, thanks!
btw did you know that in vsv all cables are stacking cables so you don't need all these mults?
cellbiol thanks! Crap man now I do
Other mentions: Reaktor Blocks, Audulus 3
Thank you for this Information.
ES-8 cost 400 Euro =0
Motu 8 cost 777 Euro =0
The ES-4 and ES-3 with ADAT/SPDIF can do well, but only with SilentWay.
Arturia Beatstep Pro should also work digital and modular, was not trying all the outputs yet.
Also a Audio Interface can CV over the Audio Outputs (in my case Motu UltraLite mk3) can 3,5 - 5,6 Volts over a TRS to TS (ring floating) Cable Type.
But i never try that last setting, i dont wanna destroy my Setup or Rack if something going wrong ^^,
So there are possibilities choose on...for people who like digital modular more than relalife cable patching, should by the ES-8/4/3. A Eurorack Modularsystem will make u poor and depressiv.
Testing analog outputs for control voltage compatibility:
motu.com/techsupport/technotes/testing-analog-outputs-for-control-voltage-compatibility
Ace. I need to integrate VCV Rack with my new hardware modular system.
now that was helpful!!!
i'm thinking about it for a long time - i've got a mother32 and a dsi tetra and would like to interface it for the lowest possible cost as well as in a spatially most compact way. perhaps another vco would be in order and not much more. your movie's spot on.
Great video and hugely useful. How did you do the video screen insert for the virtual devices? Very effective.
Thanks! Just an overlay layer in Premiere
I was saving for the BitBox ( love the switchable firmware), and now I want that ES-8 ! Your channel will be the end of me...You should look at Oscillot by MaxForCats in Ableton. Less CPU intensive, less shiny and no popular eurorack recreation but very intuitive and powerfull. Thanks for this episode, looking forward for a new one (as my banker) !
16:47 I like that sound
I have been sleeping on the Expert Sleepers ES8... pun intended ... but also... damn... This is a ridiculously useful module if you have both hardware modules and VCV.
Hello, great video about es-8, ultra clear. Do you believe it's possible to pilot Touchdesigner with expert-sleepers CV ?
God this would allow you to not worry about building up enough adsr lfos and utilities (which are important and sometimes awesome when done right) and focus on buying the effects that you want. Makes the whole thing seem less dawnting but I'll still go back and grab hard ware utilities later.
great! I bought a expert sleepers es-8! could you make also a video about ableton cv tools?
Perhaps in the future!
Its like a new world just opened up for me. I don't own Modular, I am not planning to jump down that rabbit hole, but I do have several semi-modulars including the Arturia MiniBrute 2S you are using in this video. I've always used MIDI - but have pre-MIDI legacy synths. Plus I have been using Motu Interfaces for ever - and never knew about "DC-Coupling" I have 828ES and 8PRE-ES - and the manuals don't even mention it - MOTU website does - 8 DC Outputs each only. I got onto this because Synthtopia had an article about Spektro-Audio CV toolkit today. (Do I need it?) And that sent me searching. Motu Volta software does not seem to be around any more - and was for MAC only, and $$$ anyway. Now I have a lot of new things to learn! Fascinating.
You should do a vid on how to integrate further in terms of how to add the extra virtual HP to your rack system. It's really cool how you can show the full patch virtual or hardware, cause that makes sense if you're combining video production's potential with hardware/software hybridization like this.
Like... How did you set this up so well?
Thanks! The magic of video editing :)
ES-8 is still an underrated module.
Thank you again for this great video. This might not pertain to this video, but do you think sending Audio from Bitwig (say Sample Libraries sampled from original instruments & Key Mapped Multi Layers) to External CV Modules, using a DC coupled Audio interface, ES-9, with multiple ins and outs, would really give these VST type instruments a more analog, rich sounding tone, like a well designed synthesizer, or staying ITB is just as good. I am just thinking of the computer, daw as a big Digital Data(infinite storage) center, but it being controlled by CV, to give it a bigger and complex sound. I hope that makes sense, something like the older Emu samplers would give us back some decades ago. Thank You!
@loopop is the ES-8 still your favourite way to integrate between Eurorack and VCV, or has something better come along since you posted this? Thanks for all the great vids!
Well, they released ES-9 recently, which has way more IO, but for starters ES-8 is still great, or if your interface has adat, one of the ES expanders. No other company makes a similar product that I know of.
@@loopop Thanks for the quick response, lots of inputs and outputs! Oof, not cheap, $779 (Canadian) from Nightlife Electronics. It does open up all of VCV Rack though, so it's essential as you point out.
Nice...looking into an old MOTU 828 mk1(much cheaper than expert sleepers ...)
if I understand it will only provide DV coupled outputs , not inputs correct ? That would be fine as I only intend to send modulation from Ableton CVTools to my Eurorack....the thing is : can I use two audio interfaces simultaneously in Ableton? My other synths and drum machines would be recorded multitrack through my interface Allen and Heath QU-16 interface.
Could you use the 1010 Music Blackbox with these virtual racks? Would be cool if it works and expand the setup with semi modular or Eurorack over time with Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1 Blackbox, Moog Minitaur, Make Noise O-Coast, etc
Hi Ziv, I truly enjoy your videos, I have learned a lot of them. I wonder why you haven't mentioned in this one an option like using Reaktor which has dedicated blocks for this very purpose. I'm using them through REM's BabyFace pro interface, which is not DC coupled but sports ADAT in and out that connect with Expert Sleepers ES-3, 6 and 7. I'm sure that VCV and MOTU interface is a cheaper solution but not necessarily better. Anyway, it's less messy with only two optical cables for 8 inputs and 8 outputs.
Hey Radu, thanks for your comment - no particular reason other than the video would be much longer - Reaktor is awesome - I’ll probably do a decidated video about it soon
Nice demo and very clearly explained. I’m new to modular (but not to music production) and think VCV Rack really has the potential to draw people in that didn’t want to commit to hardware. My experience of Theramin players numbers yourself so you are, by default, my Hendrix. ;)
TheVimFuego thanks!!
thanks for this great video again, if I may ask again :-) , if I connect the es8 via adat to my audio interface, (for example presonus 1810c), do I need my daw, or does the audio, (produced by vcv in this case) from the es8 comes out straight through the audio interface to my mixer/speakers. With vcv/windows I cannot use two audio core modules in vcv with two different audio interfaces, so I want to use adat, but not also my daw with that, thx
Have you ever used the ES-8 as an audio out/in without the MOTU? I own one, I love the functionality, but sending audio out, into say the Morphagene, and back to the ES-8 seems to color the sound. While it isn't horrible, it is a noticeable difference in the audio from a synth. I do plan on connecting it via ADAT to a MOTU interface similar to this one, but I was not sure if the ES-8 really was for input / out voltages, rather than audio. Any thoughts? I really do appreciate all of your videos you have helped me tremendously.
Thanks very much! ES-8 certainly works for audio but honestly I've not done a thorough A/B comparison of its converters to those on the MOTU
Could one use, say, the inputs and outputs on a Scarlett 18i20 to create the same virtualhardware patching? Or is there something special about the ES-8 over normal interfaces?
Does your ES-8 still work with VCV Rack? I just got one, it works with everything except VCV Rack. Sending CV from Rack into my hardware works fine but I'm having difficulty with the other way around.
Another question:
Do the virtual eurorack plug ins work with Reason?
Thanks
Thanks very much!
Can you elaborate about the latency that the es-8 is introducing? In my experiments with using a Roland aira modular bitrazer as dc coupled Interface (minimal Blocksite 256 Samples) the latency is quite noticable hence it's unusable. When I e.g. send triggers from the modular Hardware to Hardware modules and VCV simultaously the VCV modules get noticebly delayed. Do you have any problem with latency with the es-8?
Loopop, I'm full of questions lately, but am taking my first Eurorack steps in my defense! My Q here (I can't find this video in my Patreon archive) is, are the ES-8 and MOTU still the best games in town for bridging in this way, 2 years on? I am on the verge with the ES-8 but also eyeing the ES-9 and FH-2 with some confusion... And then just discovered the S.B.G in your CV to MIDI tutorial! Daunting. Appreciate any quick pointers or tips for most flexible first steps. Probably depends on what I am trying to achieve.
Thanks for your support! MOTU never was the only game in town, there are quite a few other companies with DC coupled outs. ES-8 and ES-9 indeed are the only ones to my knowledge with DC coupled inputs. SBG is for audio and FH-2 MIDI to CV
ES-8 is why I got into modular. Only I use Audulus to make my own modules.
Edit: I am curious, have you tried Audulus? You didn’t mention it in the laundry list of digital-modular software.
Thank you for the helpful video .Does it matter if the red cable is balanced or unbalanced .I also use voltage modular software .
Look at the manual of our audio interface to see if it's OK. MOTU and ES say it's best to use a floating ring cable
You know what would be really great? Something like this that would let you use VST/AU plugins to process audio from hardware synths.. So you could push the FX send/return from your hardware mixer into say Raum reverb or some other chain of effects from NI or others.
I just saw that you can do this. I was gonna get some hardware FX units to add effects to my hardware synth and use as fx send/return on my mixer.. But now I'll just get this and be able to add all the software effects I have to any of my hardware synths :D
Slipper slope is right! Easier not to start. (Too late for me but this is a warning.)
Try connecting the es8 to the MOTU via optical/ADAT
You sir are awesome! I have been trying to figure this out for the longest adn now I knwo what to do. Quick question how do you decide beterrn ES-3,ES-6 and ES-8? Is it the same thing with more i/o?
Shrey Sharma thanks! I think you start with the ES-8 and expand it with the ES-5/6 but I suggest you email expert sleepers to get advice for your particular needs. Enjoy!
ES-8 = ES-3 + ES-6 + USB. I.e. you need optical adat cable to the ES-3, and optical adat cable from ES-6, into any audio interface that has ADAT IO. The ES-8 however is a fully stand-alone audio interface...
I think I will go for the ES3 + ES6 cheaper, need to swap my audio interface for one that supports ADAT, more inputs, more power
Quite inspiring! So if after purchasing an ES-8 and a rack there would be money left for only one module, what would it be? Considering all there is in VCV Rack + Audulus?
Alexis Crête-Lafrenière now I need to make another clip - the second most must have module ;) probably the one you like in VCV. but need the physical controls, or unique sound, or blinky lights ;)
I'm confused yet still learning.
At 9:22 you have:
1.)input from softtube going to input of "Multiple". Why is an output not going to the input of "Multiple"?
Like how does an input push another input?
awesome...watched this video earlier but now, as I looking into the ES-8, comes in very handy... but: if already having an audio interface (Qu-16 Allen and Heath), what DAW can manage handling two interfaces simultaneously ? Or the Es-8 would work “separately” in such a situation?
on a Mac you can configure an aggregate device with two interfaces. ES also have output extension modules for regular interfaces.
loopop thank you
sick
where to get these cables?
Having the ES3 + ES6 would give more options than the ES-8, giving that I have an audio interface with S/PDIF in/out of the audio interface ? any ideas if I am correct
I like your method of cable labeling with the white dots vs bulky sticky labels from a label maker. Is that just whiteout or something else?
FilchMedia thanks! I use a white marker I bought from a local art store - I haven’t tried white out but I imagine it would start leaving crumbs quickly. Mine is called “Leto paint marker” and works quite nicely - not sure if it’s a known brand or anything and careful when you shake it - keep the cap on or wear white clothes ;)
Yah, I didn't think whiteout would have been the best choice either over time, which is why I was asking. A paint marker sounds obvious now. Thanks for info!
This is very insightful, thank you! Re the Motu audio interface, I've come across plenty of resources online about DC being harmful to speakers. Some people say this was a marketed thing in the 70s and fried a lot of amplifiers. Have you ever had any problems in this regard? If so, how did you overcome them? Do you know if recent DC coupled audio interfaces do something differently to avoid damaging the speakers? Finally, would a passive DI box placed before the speakers be a potential solution? Thank you for taking the time to read this!
I wouldn't worry about connecting Motu to speakers otherwise they'd have quite a large lawsuit on their hands. I used it for a while with no issues.
@@loopop I see, thank you!
Hi, great video! Now one question: do you know if the 828Mk3 inputs can handle sustained voltage? In my testings I saw that output does, but trying to send any sustained voltage through the inputs usually ramps down to 0V. A LFO for example losses it's amplitude as it gets slower. Seems that all is filtered with some kind of DC offset or high pass filter.
Thanks! Sounds like the inputs aren’t dc coupled :/ the only interface I’m aware of that has dc coupled inputs is ES 8 (or use their expanders)
@@loopop Yeap, thought that. Thanks for the quick reply and keep the good work, cheers!
Hey loopop, thanks for your great videos! Do you have to use Volta for the CVs out of the motu? I thought that's what keeps the control voltages in tune (?)
tffshtt you’re welcome! VCV doesn’t support plugins so you can’t use Volta - that why I explain a workaround with attenuation as a “good enough” solution. When VCV implements their DAW bridge it might be possible. Other than that you don’t really need Volta for lfos gates etc if you have VCV, it’s just the fine tuning for pitch that would be an issue. Since softube works within a daw you might be able to use Volta there but I haven’t tried it
got it, thanks! I was thinking you would have to use it before going into the VCV
tffshtt do you mean cv from a physical module?
yes, e.g. the motu: motu analog out (calibrated by volta) > vcv analog in
tffshtt why would you want to go out Motu and into VCV? If it’s already in the computer why take it out and then back in....?
It might also be worth mentioning that if you are on Windows PC you have to use ASIO4all to aggregate sound cards and it only allows 8 channels so if you have a 16 channel and you wish to use both (on Windows) you have to sacrifice 8 channels ( I found out the hard way)
Loop, Thank you for sharing, This is very timely because I'm about to enter into the modular universe. Please help, If i have only the Minibrute 2S and the VCV Rack, can i achieve this amazing bridge between the software and hardware? if not, why?
ShoRoc Production MoolahNasreddin yes you can but you need either the ES-8 (and a case and power to house it) or a DC coupled interface like the ones I show in the video. Once you have that you have all the virtual modules to interface with your minibrute 2
Wow!! I'm anxiously excited... Thank you for reply :)
Would this work with a Roland system 1m and a Motu Microbook 1 (The silver one from around 2010)? It has analog ins / out, but after watching your video I'm afraid of burning anything out. I see special cables are needed as well. Thanks in advance, I've learned so much from you and BoBeats on so much stuff I can't even began to think how grateful I am for you guys.
Thanks! I don't know - depends if it's DC coupled. Check the specs or, if you have them, just try!
@@loopop the Motu Microbook ver. 1 does have DC Coupled outs! I just ordered the balanced TRS cables to use with it. Thanks again! ♥️
What a great video! I'm moving my first steps in the word of integrating modular and digital. I have a Motu Ultralite Mk4 for this purpose, but I didn't start yet: I heard that many people use special "floating ring" cables (TRS to TS with the ring disconnected), to connect the DC coupled interface to their Eurorack modules, but I noticed you use normal TS "mono" patch cables, even with your Motu. Have you ever deepened that topic? I'm still confused if they are necessary or not!
Motu say they are necessary - I added a comment in the description to that effect as well. I works but can be harmful over time I’m told
@@loopop I'm wandering if an insert cable (modified with 3.5mm TSs outputs instead 6.3mm ones) can give (in addition to the same result in the mono out connected to the tip) also the utility of an inverted signal on the other output connected to the ring. Theoretically it will. I must give a try :)
Two questions. 1) can we set up some kind of automatic trigger. When loopop reviews something, it automatically deducts my bank account and ships the gear to me?
2) I believe Ableton Live only lets you talk to one audio interface. So if I want to keep my other gear wired in (mics, synths, monitors), while simultaneously using CV tools, etc, then sound card with optical to ES-3 would be a way to accomplish this?
Awesome video man!
Kinda confused; this is about integrating modules with virtual ones right? ...Not necessary integrating your modular with a DAW, as any midi/cv module would be able to send MIDI from DAW to the modular and viceversa...if there’s MIDi Out in your converter module of course.
Not sure if I’m getting this thing right...
Also not sure how to get the sound(as audio) into my DAW for recording; last module is a VCA and then can it go into any external mixer ? ...or is it necessary a dedicated “output” module? Hard for me to get his “voltage/line level” signal thing.
Sorry for bombing....
To the last point, generally you can just plug any module output directly into your audio interface inputs to record/monitor the signal. There are dedicated 'output' modules but often you don't really need them.
MIDI is best avoided in this scenario. It forces you into a very narrow "I will now control my modular with MIDI notes" view. If you use audio/CV connections you're bypassing all that and just exchanging signals between DAW and modular, completely flexibly.
If you want to sequence with MIDI notes, you can use e.g. Silent Way to do that, and output the CVs via the ES-8 or other DC coupled audio interface. The joy is that you don't have to have a dedicated MIDI/CV converter. Want 4 voices of MIDI/CV? Then use 4 Silent Way plug-ins and 8 outputs of your ES-8? But want 8 LFOs instead? Then just load up software LFOs and use the ES-8 again. Or just use some of the outputs to send audio to the modular. Any output can become anything.
chatolars hey - I see the question was answered for me ;) I agree with the answer
loopop thank you !!👍👍😘😘
thanks for this great vid. Two queries: if in your example setup, the MOTA 8A is the alternative to the ES-8, why are the outputs from the 8A going into the ES-8...isn't the point that the 8A outputs can be used to send CV directly the modular modules? (I only ask as otherwise I have missed or misunderstood something). Also, relating to the comparison between the 8A and the Ultralite MK4 - are you saying the MK4's input are NOT DC coupled, but the 8A's are? (I looked on the specs sheets on MOTU's products pages but it didn't reference DC coupling on either set of inputs, just on each interface's outputs. Cheers in advance.
Thanks! Only the outputs on the MOTUs are DC coupled. Re connecting motu to es8 you’ll have to point me to where I did that in the video - that’s from a while ago. It’s not necessary though
@@loopop wow, thanks fro lightning fast reply! around 13:30 is where it shows outputs from 8A going into ES-8, but thanks for clarifying that these could go straight into CV inputs of the module synths directly. Sorry, but more questions arise then - do the analogue inputs on the interface need to be DC coupled if taking audio i.e. having DC coupled inputs is only necessary if one wants to pass CV back into the digital domain e.g. to my DAW or one of the software products this video references? Also, if the inputs do NOT have to be DC coupled (for audio) is it just about having sufficient headroom for the hot Eurorack signals?
