      20 dollars a week will make a grand a year. We saved for quite a while and used our business to offset it a bit. One thing for sure. I'm not very handy at all. But the oil pump, not the oil less is what we have and its SUPER easy to use. Dont fear it. Plus it's a bunch cheaper

      I am a little late to this conversation but just want to let everyone know I got my home freeze dryer from Home Depot. If you get the Home Depot credit card, they periodically run specials where purchases over $1,999 is 24 months *interest free*. I also converted credit card points to a couple hundred dollars worth of Home Depot gift cards. If you can be disciplined enough to make monthly payments budgeted so that the freeze dryer is paid off in two years, Home Depot will loan you the money so you can get the freeze dryer *now* and beat the coming price increases on food. This makes more sense to me than Harvest Right's layaway plan where you have to pay off the bulk of the cost before you get the machine.

    If you look around on eBay and Amazon you can find some small businesses that freeze-dry and package for long-term storage raw boneless steaks, pork chops, chicken breasts, peeled shrimp and fish fillets from the supermarket as well as sliced cooked ham, Canadian bacon and roast beef. This type of meat costs at least twice what the same amount of servings of non-dried product from your supermarket would cost. If you want long-term, grid-down meat storage that will not be harmed by freeze and thaw cycles, then freeze-dried is the way to go if you can afford it. Canned meat and frozen meat cost less, but you have to keep those cans from freezing and need reliable power to keep that freezer running.
    During this pandemic, our household has been using cooked, freeze-dried hamburger patties from Nutrisystem (bought in bulk years ago at deep discount) and when re-hydrated they taste very similar to hamburger patties from McDonald's and Burger King. They are not as flavorful as home-cooked hamburger patties made at home from raw ground beef. But it is hard to beat the convenience and length of storage you get with freeze-dried meat. Have not yet touched our #10 cans, #2.5 cans and Mylar packets of freeze-dried steaks, pork chops, shrimp, chicken, cod fish and salmon fillets. Saving those for next year to boost morale if this pandemic is still infecting people and we are still in self-quarantine. Good luck and stay safe.

  • @steveanimatrix3887
    @steveanimatrix3887 2 роки тому

    If anyone is curious why the steak is brownish instead of bright red, it's due to the freeze drying process which vacuums out all the air. Oxygen exposure is what makes blood red. Remove the oxygen and the red goes away. There's no difference in the quality or freshness of the meat, though. Very important to label raw and cooked meats as it's a lot harder to tell after they're freeze dried. Also if you put your Worcestershire sauce in with the water when rehydrating, it will suck it (or any other spices) right into the meat. Adding melted butter while dehydrating is also a treat.

  • @gaylerenteria9946

    Meat turns out wonderful, but remember to always treat raw meat with the care that you always do...it still has the same chance of bacteria. Meat will always rehydrate with the same amount of liquid that was vacuumed out. Looks yummy!!!

      They are probably medium. One problem with freeze drying red meats is since it sucks all of the oxygen out, red meat turns brown. Oxygen makes blood red. That's the only difference though. It would still have a "medium" texture and flavor. Just no red/pink.

    I agree AP, you should definitely look into getting a freeze dryer. You would love it. Just another option for long term food preservation in addition to the canning.
    We got ours for a good deal on craigslist. I guess a lot of people buy them and lose interest, maybe a little harder now to find a good deal with everyone starting to prep, but definitely worth it!
    I used to have mine in the garage (the pump it comes with is kind of noisy), we recently moved out of state so i bought a restaurant style stainless steel table and i have it in the new basement. I want to get the oil less pump eventually. Changing/filtering the oil is kind of a hassle.
    Before we moved, i asked my mom to make her famous pot roast so i could take it with me. I rehydrated it with hot water, and made a pot of rice. If there were ever an emergency, that would be the ultimate comfort food! Tastes like it was just made

    Update on canning classes. My single dad came with corn on the cobb, carrots, more green beans, potatoes, and tomatoes. About 20# each. His daughter and oldest son also showed up. Daughter peeled carrots, I pealed potatoes, dad cut corn off cobb and son snapped beans. And the marathon was on! Eleven hrs later dad and the son went home, the daughter spent the night helping with salsa. She pooped out about 5 pm and went to bed in my loft room. I finished up one more canner of beans. This morning dad picked up 7 cases of quarts and 2 cases of pints and yes his daughter. Lol Last night he went to Walmart bought shelves and buckets, he is heading to the Amish store for dry goods in bulk and spices. He made a comment that makes me assume that he is using his stimulus check for the preps. Quote "900 dollars down and 1800 to go. " what lucky kids to have a dad thinking of the future! Hugs everyone! God bless you all

    I have to admit that looks weird as hell but when SHTF and I’m hunkered down in my underground dwelling I certainly wouldn’t be complaining! A few weeks ago I bought about 6 whole beef tenderloins when they were at $6.99 a pound. I cleaned and sliced them into steaks and vacuuming-sealed them. Might seem extreme but beef isn’t going down so I’m a fan of making hay while the sun is shining...

I paid for it on the spot and had to go home and get my truck since we drove her car there. Now there are 3 chest freezers and two 36” refrigerators here. Freezers are tough to come by lately so I couldn’t let the opportunity pass by... Have an awesome Sunday!!!
