Overfishing… their tipping us off
Hmmmmm, maybe the brown pelican population is too big and starting to balance itself out. Other marine animals aren’t having this issue.
@@TiredAmerican247good point!
I'll let your grammar slide because you might be on to something.
It’s both overfishing and fish dying because of ocean pollution and the ever changing ocean environment.
@@MayLily what fish are being overfished/dying?
1:33 It is not myster the fish are dead. The leak of over 100,000 gallons of crude oil off the coast of Southern California first came to official attention with a vague report October 1, 2021 about a sheen on the water. It took more than 12 hours for authorities to recognize the extent of the problem.
Maybe it's because we've polluted our oceans and nearly all the fish are gone.
Wrong
More likely is the thousands of sea lions in the bay are eating all the fish.
@@TiredAmerican247 lmao just full denial of the ecological collapse we've created. Your name should be "TypicalAmerican247".
@@TheBachB They clearly said that other birds are having no problems finding fish.
@@TheBachB tell me you know nothing about the “ecological collapse” without telling you don’t know anything about ecological collapse.
2 years ago a pod of orcas, off Washington State were starving for lack of salmon. The cod on the east coast are about done. Redfish in the Gulf are gone. At what point will people be alarmed by this?
When the world will go full Mad Max minus the cool cars.
I don´t believe empathy is a default human trait. The vast majority of humans don´t have empathy. They only care when something has a negative impact on them personally.
Let me aswer your question...when it's directly gonna impact our life, or more precisely our overlords lives that's when, but by that point it's already gonna be too late.
America has a decently sustainable fishing industry.
It’s the asian nations that overfish the oceans, especially china.
America has no power to stop the Chinese fishing fleets from ransacking the oceans without risking backlash from china.
Pelicans can live up to 25 years and even more. Down in the Florida Keys last year all of the birds disappeared. From the docks from the trees and the mangroves. They came back but not as many and they started disappearing again
Poor babies! I live in Santa Cruz. I’ve seen them recently and despite appearing roughly the same size as they normally are, you can tell they’re not doing well. I’m talking lethargic and confused. They typically stay away from humans (unless you’re fishing off the wharf and have your caught fish in a pail). Lately however, it seems as if they’re randomly ambling about with no specific goal. Feeding them is prohibited and it just breaks your heart. Kudos to these people working to get them back to a normal weight! Their efforts don’t go unnoticed!
i seen the similar thing from the seagulls at weed truck stop in oregon. alot of very hungry birds. if u toss a small piece of bread 10s of them swarm it.
@@henlohenlo689 that’s normal of all seagulls. They are super opportunistic birds.
Feed them anyway!!! Humans destroyed their habitat with oil leaks etc the least we can do is helping them by feeding them!!!!
@@elishh8173 you don’t feed wild animals.
Dont feed them directly but humans can absolutely provide indirect support to the wildlife we help destroy.
I will donate to The International Bird Rescue in Fairfield CA asap. Thanks for telling us.
NO no pls 😢 i need money 😢 give to me😊
robux 😂😂😂😂
Poor pelicans.
Bird flu.
they're getting cucked
Thank you. I found the link to the rescue center and am sending a donation tomorrow.
So strange it wasn’t included, as I, too, was looking. Please share link? Thx so much! 🦤🦤🦤🦤

A Brown Pelican stopped play at the Giants game today flying into the field of play.
Hope they were able to help the poor pelican.
😢 the poison in the 💦 poor precious things
he flew off, no?
Saw that, then saw this. That had to have been a starving pelican on the field today.
Actually, publicly begging for help. Wow 😔
omg i called in a sad little skinny pelican walking at pacifica! it was so stressed and unable to fly to anywhere it needed to go. omg
@beatpirate8 Similar situation in Santa Cruz where I live. It breaks your heart to see them like that! On top of that, feeding is prohibited so there’s literally nothing you can do about it. 😔
@@stanford-nf4jk Why is feeding prohibited?
Maybe the fact that humans have depleted the oceans of fish for decades has something to do with it?
It would be depletion of the sardines. Those aren't the main fish we are eating. The sardine fishery used to be far larger than it is today.
Poor birds. Hope they will be ok.
Agreed, I hope they can figure out the cause
You will forget about this in 5 days.
@@slaydog5102 Thats irrelevant. Whats more important is the fact that nobody even remembered you to begin with. :(
What a shame; pelicans are such cool birds.
Yes. They were nearly made extinct back in the 60s due to DDT pesticides. And,many other spieces of birds…
Even bird shelters are overwhelmed in this country geez
Dimoic acid? It can cause disorientation as well as starvation.
Good point! We need to be looking at all possibilities! We need bird people, fish people, ocean people all people to get this figured out!
Thank you I immediately wondered if it could be some kind of toxin, as it's affecting way too many at once for lack food to be the problem.
😢😢😢😢😢I love pelicans ❤
Bless This Effort LORD! 🙏 Send what is Needed and Bless all the Workers. Pelicans are Your creatures.
Oh yes pray, because that works clearly! God obviously doesn’t care…
@@slaydog5102alright Debbie downer, cheer up friend. Xo
I sent $20. Who else can help?
My older sister loved pelicans.
Poor pelicans 😔 ! Unfortunately i can barely pay for gas and food on top of ALLLL other bills 🙃 ! But bless you for that 20 dollar donation 🙏 🙏
😂
Would absolutely love to volunteer! I live 5 hours away!
We have a lot of pelicans
Here on NC coast.
Thank Goodness they have fish here
But with all the development we have it is affecting our fish population too
the same state that killed 200k salmon now has starving birds that eat fish
Actually one man with a bad idea! Teach your kids consequences!
Where's the surface fish? These also look like adult pelicans, and there's the bird flu.
The warmer the water the deeper the fish go. The pelicans probably can't get to them. It's not bird flu, they would have said so and or destroyed the birds to stop it spreading. What they SAID was they are still unclear but I'm guessing the water is too warm. The news won't connect it yet but we all also are seeing vids on the staggering rise in ocean temps, and this year is slated to be off the charts. A few years ago I was in Bolinas visiting and there were signs up about a bird called a murre that the birds were having similar starvation issues b/c the fish were too deep that year. Cheers
Complete overfishing and illegal fishing.
Look back historically at when this has happened before. Global warming, climate changes, migratory animals are greatly affected by this. This is not the first time brown pelicans have gone through this. I’m glad we are helping to support them
This is terrible! Grew up in Santa Cruz. A few years ago there were hundreds of pelicans in the water off West Cliff, just chilling. I can't imagine this place without them. I'm glad we have so many dedicated ocean scientists in the area. I hope they can figure out what's going on.
It HAS to have some tie-in with global warming.
I wish I lived closer to this, I would help.❤
Oh no! I was just in Santa Cruz and saw a dead one on the beach... this is SO sad!! Saw a few live ones, and we became pals, and I named him Steven.. I do hope Steven is okay! I need to figure out how to work volunteering for these prehistoric wonders, they are calling out for help and we need to answer the call! Everyone who is helping, you are doing the work of angels, thank you doesn't even begin to cover it!! SAVE THE STEVENS!!
What is the surface temperature of the water? Maybe the fish are too deep for their fishing habits?
Their food source has depleted due to warm waters.
So, a pelican walked into a bar…
I would volunteer
Everyone blaming it on people with literally no proof of that being the case yet is pretty typical.
This is so sad. We are on a terrible path forward...
Please, make certain that they don’t go extinct. Please feed them.
The earth is starting to turn on us.
OMG. This is tragic. 😢
How are the pelicans starving and the seals are chowing down on anchovies and small fish?
There’s a record number of sea lions in CA. I’m thinking the brown pelican population is too big and it’s starting to level itself out.
@TiredAmerican247 It’s the sea lions that are in overabundance. I live a mile inland in Santa Cruz and you can hear them. They’re *LOUD* ! 🦭🦭🦭🦭🦭
@@stanford-nf4jk I agree. They’re all the way up in Anderson on the Sac River and that over 100 miles from the mouth of the Sac River.
@@TiredAmerican247 or maybe the shark population is too low.
@@christhompson6010 actually the great white shark population has grown substantially. That’s who feeds on the sea lions. Sea lion populations have exploded because there’s no hunting allowed for them.
For some reason the fish are not at the surface area....why?
The water is too hot. The fish go deeper to find cooler temps. The birds can't follow beyond what they have evolved to be able to do.
@@rhobot75 This makes sense.
The oceans are empty no more fish
Imagine how those fish feel (upon getting harvested to feed the very same Pelicans that they just eluded).
2:29
Their anchovies. So now they won't show up on a nasty pizza.
God bless you all for rescuing these God's beautiful creatures .❤❤❤❤❤❤
@1:18 Pelican walks into a bar, orders a drink. Pelican tells the bartender “put it on my bill.”
01:23 Pelican walks into a bar.
when its not a joke its wild.
I am assuming this kind of instance goes hand in hand with the spinning fish spectacle that was seen on UA-cam very recently. I just saw the story yesterday in my UA-cam "refresh" when I came back from another page.
OMG! I knew that widespread famine will become the norm. But it never occurred to me that the animals we eat facing famine would be part of the equation. I know we don't eat pelicans. But the pelican famine is a harbinger of things to come for other animals and birds. It won't just be grains and vegetables that we'll see major shortages of. So freaking scary.
I volunteer at a wildlife rescue on the east coast and it is beyond rewarding and helpful. If you can volunteer any money or time to help these pelicans, do it!! 🙏🩷
I found the link to the rescue center and am sending a check tomorrow. I also sent it along in my email list, and posted on social media.
This is very alarming
Guys they said other birds who feed on the same fish as pelicans are fine which means they have plenty of food out there, it's just that the pelicans can't seem to find it. So something is interfering with their senses is what it sounds like to me. Possibly a chemical exposure is my guess
Over Fishing is the reason
Poison fish? Down here in Florida they fish all day long, a very self sufficient bird.
Wait wasn’t there an excess amount of sea lions in the Bay Area?
Lots of fish for sea lions but starving pelicans ??? What is the problem ???
Plastic
I was thinking the same thing
There’s been plastic in the water for years and, while it can impact fish, it is likely that this is a water temp or current situation that has driven baitfish to places further away from the SoCal Coast where many of these pelicans were just born. Not enough accessible baitfish.
Sea lions can dive much deeper.
@@28th_St_Air what you say is true. Although plastic does do a lot of damage to sea birds, now that I think about it, it wouldn’t effect a large group all at once like this.
The real alarming part is that we are so unaware of fish populations.
Humans. That is the issue.
It’s always humans
They are starving and they DON’T KNOW WHY?
Hmmm maybe over fishing?
They eat baitfish. Baitfish populations aren’t an issue. Probably too many brown pelicans and this is natures way of balancing the population.
Smart humans left california years ago poor pelicans they don’t know any better.
Why is it assumed to be a lack of fish if the other animals that eat the same fish are ok? It sounds like something else is wrong. Are the food fish behaving differently? Is there a new contaminent that affects only pelicans? Is the pelican actually ill, exposed to something else, having it's perceptions altered, also eating something that now has something like mercury in it like the mountain lions a few years ago?Is there a new broadcast of some sort in the area that might affect the pelicans appetite or hunting ability? There is something very odd about this.
Maybe the other animals don´t eat the same species of fish. "They all eat fish, so they should be affected too" is oversimplification.
Maybe the other animals can dive deeper for the fish than the pelicans.
The fish might dwell deeper because the water is warmer, so the water layer with the optimal temperature for them is too low for the pelicans.
Or maybe other species are affected too but they are not big and remarkable enough, so nobody noticed yet.
@@Mouse_Metalastute reasoning.
Pelicans are a large migratory bird, and they require a large amount of calories very frequently to sustain themselves. Smaller, more stationary birds have more leeway when it comes to getting calories so they don't deteriorate as fast, but that doesn't mean they aren't.
I’m scared. This is a sign our planet is going toward extinction. If pelicans are starving because they can’t get their food source then we are next.
We are so excited that we humans are the proof of our inability to correlate with nature. We are all next in line. It is. so severely immature of humans. Yet we still participate in this money game. I don’t get it. I’ve never understood why
More power to you guys, get it.
Scary
2:43 take in this many birds, need hands on deck, volunteers are the backbone
My last trip to Texas gulf coast I did notice Pelicans were keeping to themselves and not harassing local fishermen on piers or restaurants by the bay unlike other years, they were never malnourished or dying, but always harassing boaters and people for food, that said we have had really strict rules on what we can catch, I think the economy had more effect, those outdoor activities with the cost of fuel bait, really adds up. Several of the boat owners in the area have sold off their boats, and two of the marinas have closed.
I think the current weather has something to do with it. The fish are probably not in the usual places during this time of year, so the birds are confused and dont what to do... It might make more sense to relocate them rather than feed them.
There aren’t enough fish, then.
Overfishing oil spills The list goes on
The world is dying the dinosaur was for 250 million years . Man 22,000 years
humans' insatiable appetite is always met but the animal's suffer that appetite
Either too little fish or too many pelicans around
Directly caused by the ongoing eruption of the Axial Seamount off the coast of Oregon since 1998. The sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano acidify the water, kiling starfish, shellfish and microorganisms at the base of the food chain. The fish the pelicans eat have either moved away to where there's food for them or have died off.
Pelicans everywhere you’re gonna need some fish I love fish thanks for the update
Fairfield?
Where do I donate
Feels ominous to me
We have all the food
*Is there something physically wrong with them that’s affecting their ability to hunt?* Like maybe a toxin that’s affecting their eyesight &/or coordination?
No, the water is too hot. The fish are too deep.
@@rhobot75 ohhhhhh that makes a lot of sense. Thank you!
This is very telling and very sad
Repair, heal and protect Mother Earth 🙏🏾🫶🏾
I feel like if it was merely a lack of fish the problem would be obvious and less acute.
Maybe something is effecting the pelicans specifically, some sort of pollutant or something electromagnetic.
Overfishing an/or micro plastics?
... Better to donate money for these much loved brown pelicans, than to waste money giving to that former president and his sons ...
And the current flesh puppet is doing better?
@@TiredAmerican247they are both losers..just like their supporters..I’m guessing you fit the bill
If you're going to get political - how about no more wars, especially in a global climate crisis? If the oceans collapse, there ain't no war profiteering either. It doesn't matter which party or leaning, they all are bought and paid for by the industry. None of them represent the people or the environment we need to exist.
*MINE?*
Water temps near the surface forcing the feed schools deeper?
Gosh didn’t they just come back from the brink of extinction now this….I’d be looking at chemicals…yikes
Have you ever watched the boy and the heron? There's a whole scene where the pelicans are going hungry. It's an anime and if you haven't seen it you should watch it it's quite sad. It's by the same guy that did spirited away Miyazaki but there's a whole scene where pelicans are just trying to eat and they're not the bad guys
Maybe the fact that humans are stealing their food supplies could answer your questions 😊
Maybe the birds have contracted a parasite that is harming their digestive tracts? It could be affecting pelicans the most because of their particular feeding habits.
Did they run out of pigeons?
Not here in Oceanside! I see them dive bomb the bait balls all the time
Crude oil leaks are killing marine life and the pelicans survive in the marine life. It's almost like it's all connected and we need to be caring about everything.
So? You are a sanctuary city aren't ya? Own it! lol
🙏🏻🌿
They need to investigate the “scientists” who say they have no idea what’s happening. If the birds are healthy. This is a response to environment destruction, and over fishing.
OMG! They are in trouble!!!!!
They are starving!! Something is eating their food! This could be a food chain problem...
Could it be from over fishing or over reliance on human food/waste??? 🤔
Its overfishing probably.
Surface temp to hot fish are to deep
Because the fish is pfas
It's because the fish have migrated north to the less saltier waters the bay area ..300 percent snow pack melted into the bay area water via the Sacramento river..look at the sea lion population this year at pier 39 San Francisco..the sea lions followed the fish and the birds didn't
Please post where to donate?
Even the animals suffer in California
No fish. Fukushima
