I think the most frustrating part about flying that gives people the most reluctance to do it is the lack of consistency in the enforcement in the rules. And the difference between TSA rules, and the rules for each individual airline company, that sometimes conflict with each other.
You are correct and trust me driving is always preferred but I can’t drive that much with how often I have to travel. Knock on wood I have had nothing but good experiences thus far.
This right here. Definitely have to err on the side of being more careful. I flew from NC to CA, then back with pistols and was interesting how things were different on each side, both in declaring and picking up. Also will note that firearms accessories, like a red dot by itself, may not be allowed by some airports. And on a round trip flight, once you’ve declared pistols when flying out, you’re automatically flagged when flying back that you need to declare firearms. So if you’re flying out with them, make sure you’re flying back with them, lol. Chris makes a good point, have to be kind and respectful.
@@Chrisblau Well there’s definitely the best way of doing it like you mentioned. It’s just unfortunate that you have to jump though so many hoops of arbitrary rules. I’m glad you’ve had such great success with how much you fly.

Thanks for the AirTag idea. One tip I'd like to share: Remove the bolt or place a chamber flag in so the weapon is out of battery. I used to get called back to open the case on occasion, and was told the x-ray machine can't always confirm the chamber is empty. Since I started doing this, I have never been called back during the 10-15 minute waiting period.

Right! Such a simple fix for a legitimate concern I feel. Bro I watch the case all the way till it’s underneath me. It just adds such piece of mind dude.
2 things, 1. per TSA you don’t have to have all lock holes filled, ammo can be in magazines or boxes designed to carry ammunition. 2. It makes it a hell of a lot easier if you do these things, you get people at the American Airlines counter and TSA who know nothing about guns and having the airline requirements and TSA requirements pulled up on your phone at the gate can help a bit but going above and beyond is the best option.
Speaking from experience; when they wipe down your case and say, “your case came back positive for explosives”. The response of, “no shit Sherlock” will elicit multiple ego packed TSA agents to come mess with you. 😂

Hey man thank you for saying that. Again these are just our experiences but I feel we and specifically I (chris) have done this quite a bit all over the country
Just something to consider... I was watching a video the other day from the "Armed Attorneys" and they made a good point about having paper copies of tax stamps and not using pictures on your phone. Reason being, if the approving documents are on your phone and the agent requires those documents then they can do a data dump on your phone and also "find" (manufacture) any other "incriminating" evidence that could lead to other legal issues. They recommended using the photos on your phone for your personal records but to have paper copies for providing proof to law enforcement. Just some food for thought.
I fly southwest with my AR-15 & ammo without issue few times / year. I separate the upper & lower to fit in negrini hard case then put the hard case into samsonite luggage, amo & AR in same hard case ... southwest would have me sign the declaration of firearms & ammo and they would tape the declaration paper outside the Negrini case.. I never talk to any TSA people usually airline employee only.....- when picking up my luggage at my destination, I just pick it up where everybody else on my flight picks up their luggage .

Best cases to fly with are the Pelican 1700, Pelican Air 1615 and 1535. All of these are right at the limit for oversized baggage. So you'll never have to worry about paying extra. The 1700 for guns. The 1615 for gear. The 1535 is perfect sized for overhead bins and has been a godsend.
you only have to have as many locks as it takes to make the interior inaccessible to anyone. i fly a lot with a rifle pelican case with southwest and Alaska airlines.
Never put the firearm inside a box that is inside a suitcase. Always check your firearm box separately with the airline, get receipt and provide receipt at office at destination. If you put your firearms inside a suitcase and your suitcase gets lost or you are delayed getting it off of the turnabout, someone can grab your suitcase. If flight is delayed gun is lost.
they do that double zip tie nonsense going into Jackson, WY every year. Such a pain. Added tip - take a picture of the signed airline tag they place in the case next to all of your gear to confirm (in the event of loss) that all the stuff you said was in there, was actually in the case at the time the airline took possession.
You cannot use firearm magazines or clips for packing ammunition unless they completely enclose the ammunition. That was pulled directly from the TSA website so could you not just use the clip on pmag dust covers to seal the mags?
I fly about 50 times per year and only fly SWA so my experience may be different. Ammo does NOT have to be in the OEM box. It can be in any secure container. Yes you can have mags in a firearm if they are unloaded. The TSA has their own set of rules and then the individual airline has their own set of rules. I ran into the exact same issue the guy on the right (sorry I dont know your names) talked about with the hard side suitcase not being allowed. I was using a Pelican 1637 case and had a pistol inside a soft divided zip up organizer that I use for work tools. The lady was trying to say it wasnt compliant because the gun wasnt in a hard case since it was in the soft organizer. It took me forever to explain to 5 other supervisors that the gun is in a fricken hard pelican case just like a hunting rifle. They just could get their head around a small gun being in a soft case inside a giant hard case. Every morning before I fly I print the rules from the website. I have had tons of times where the agent says they dont like something and I argue it and they say "well the rule was changed" and I ask when and they lie and give me some BS then I show them the printed rules. Wow you fly Allegiant...I feel sorry for you.

Ammo usually needs to be in separate case when flying internationally, avoid flying Ethiopian airlines with firearms at all costs, they stole my ammo and lost my firearms took about 1 month to get them back
Wow…..I have flown 2 dozen times with firearms and I haven’t had to do a lot of what you have stated. I have flown all those times with loaded mags and they were fine with that because a magazine is an ammo storing device. I had one airport in TX have an issue with it because they were afraid the top round would come out so they just taped over the top of my magazines. Since that isolated issue I now store the ammo in an MTM case which is what reloaders use to store ammo and haven’t had any issues with that either. @@YaBoyCoye I would say 99 times out of 100, that won't work. It can often depend on the airport and the officer screening your case. Disclaimer: I no longer work for TSA, so my information may be outdated.

I go over that. You check it and then pick up at over sized luggage, or recently I had to find the lost baggage type area that also does huh cases at sky harbor so that was new but they usually check your id and match the case to the id. It will sometimes come out on the conveyor like regular checked bags. That’s only happened twice but both areas are right next to each other usually.
I live in the South but my family lives in Illinois. Most of the state is pro gun but we all know Chicago isn’t. That being said I have never personally flown with a gun, but I have a friend that does frequently and apparently if you fly through O’Hare, regardless of how proper your documentation is or how well the firearm in question follows the strict Chicago gun laws, they held his guns for seven days and he had to pick them up from a separate police station later. He now flys through Milwaukee but he ran through that issue multiple times at O’Hare between 2015 and 2019
I've heard stories of people who flew with guns and the plane got diverted to NYC and in NYC the specific firearm was not in a NY legal configuration and they got arrested. No idea if it's actually true but I have heard similar stories multiple times.
Should clarify things a bit. 1. Legally you are not supposed to use TSA locks per federal law, but be aware that TSA’s rules on their website specifically says you can. You shouldn’t. 2. There is no limit under the law or TSA rules on how many firearms you can check, but some airlines do have limits. The person you check your bag in with is an airline ticket agent, not TSA, so this is likely who said this. 3. Ammunition does NOT have to be the the manufacturer’s original box. This is not the law, is not a TSA rule, and is not a rule under any airline I’m aware of. Aftermarket plastic ammunition boxes are supposed to be acceptable. The rule only says that it has to be a container designed to carry ammunition, and adequate to keep the ammunition completely enclosed, but you may run into a ticket agent or TSA agent who thinks otherwise, so original box is a safer option. 4. Empty magazines inside pistols is legal, but this is another non-existent rule that they will sometimes invent on the spot (unfortunately there are a lot of them). 5. Using a locked hard sided suitcase with the gun in among other items is supposed to be acceptable. However, Delta (not TSA) now apparently has a policy against it, even though the rules on Delta’s own official site specifically says “hard sided suitcase” under acceptable cases. I and two other people I know have run into this with Delta (not TSA or any other airline) in the last six months at multiple airports in multiple states, though not all. 6. 50/50 on whether your bag comes out on the regular belt or not. There’s no law or TSA reg on this. It’s airport/airline specific. 7. Zip ties. This (and bags going to the baggage office instead of just coming out on the belt) started because a dirtbag grabbed his bag off the belt at the Delta baggage claim in Fort Lauderdale a few years ago, went into the restroom, retrieved his gun, then came out and killed a bunch of people in the baggage claim. If they zip tie your bag, you are not supposed to remove the zip ties till you leave the building which is why they won’t do it for you. If you’re flying Delta in or out of Fort Lauderdale you’ll notice that they are more uptight about all of this there. They will have police officers there when you come to claim your bag to make sure you follow the rules.
I’m always getting flagged at the airport. TSA always say random check but it isn’t random. I used to travel a lot. One day before that random checks, I went to the gun range. I dropped everything off at home and went to the airport and the alarm was going off. TSA asked me why and I said that I just came from the gun range and I told them to call the range and they didn’t want to do it. They marked me as a terrorist instead. I don’t even travel with firearms by the way because of that reason.
How to fly with guns on planes: Rent a plane and hire me (or your local commercial pilot at your local airport) Dang guys you fly so much how come you don’t just get a contract with someone and fly in a small plane? Probably more cost effective🤷♂️
@@connorlohse4097 yeah for sure, because operating you a plane gets cheaper per hour the more you use it. Most commercial pilots if you get a contract with them charge a constant rate and then you pay for the aircraft via rent, partial ownership, or just owning the plane. There’s a few reasons it gets cheaper the more you use it but it’s basically because you need to pay X amount no matter if you use it or not each year (fixed cost) and then it costs Y amount to use it per hour (variable cost) so at the end of the year if you divide the total cost X+Y then divide it by the number hour hours you flew the cost per hour can drop pretty significantly the more you use it.
@@connorlohse4097 there’s a whole bunch of things I could get into about the regulations if you’d want but the best way to get into flying a small plane as a business is really to be a partial owner in a plane or just buy a plane, which appears super expensive but in reality if you buy a used plane in good condition it holds its value WAY better than a car does, you can usually sell it for the same value you bought it. As a pilot it makes it a lot harder to operate commercially if I personally owned the plane I was flying people around with, then you have to get different certifications and stuff from the FAA that are very strict, but if the customer provides the aircraft and I’m just hired to fly it, the regulations are much more loose and cheaper for everyone.

Flying with guns is bullshit. You know why? Because Chris said ammunition must be in the manufacturer's packaging, but another person who flies with guns a lot (on the Vortex podcast, his name escaped me) has said he loads all of his magazines before flying because magazine do in fact qualify as ammunition storage since magazines are very much designed to store ammo. And here's the thing, Chris and the guy who's name I forgot are both right because the TSA, like every government agency, has a set of rules that only half of them know and only half of those ever care to enforce properly.
Yeah mathematically with how much I fly there isn’t enough time. My last trip was phoenix to Dallas, Dallas to Georgia, Georgia to Dallas Dallas to salt lake salt lake to Phoenix. Not enough time that’s why this is a video about FLYING with firearms.

Hi, Transportation Security Officer here!
To my knowledge, there is no limit on checked firearms. The inconsistency on rules and policies is across the board. We had an inconsistency issue on safety razors for literally 6 weeks. It's frustrating for everyone involved.
Thanks for chiming in
Wow no way? So quick question from your understanding was everything I said correct and on ease by all means tell me if I was incorrect.
hey man on the TSA website, it says You cannot use firearm magazines or clips for packing ammunition unless they completely enclose the ammunition. Could you not just use the clip on pmag dust covers to seal the mags?
@@YaBoyCoye I would say 99 times out of 100, that won't work. It can often depend on the airport and the officer screening your case.
Disclaimer: I no longer work for TSA, so my information may be outdated.
@@Chrisblaurewatching the video (sorry, I'm bad at UA-cam comments) yes everything is on point. Especially that every officer is a little different. Also good call on them not opening your case without you present. That's something I'll need to remember the next time I fly.
Ḍo the air tags work with Android phones?
How does it go for the large pelican case? Checking in and picking up???
I go over that. You check it and then pick up at over sized luggage, or recently I had to find the lost baggage type area that also does huh cases at sky harbor so that was new but they usually check your id and match the case to the id. It will sometimes come out on the conveyor like regular checked bags. That’s only happened twice but both areas are right next to each other usually.

We all know Finn wins best presenter
Woodland winter is right ❤❤
Airtags are great for luggage regardless of whether you're traveling with guns
100% obviously
be sure to check your airlines' specific rules!!!! Some dont allow ammo at all and others WILL allow you to have loaded magazines!!!!
Anyone know how picky TSA is about flying OUT of California with a pistol?
Sorry I laughed so hard when he walked into the plank
😂😂😂
Never happened
Do you keep a hidden tracking device in the case? I'd be worried about airline "losing" my case of guns.
Just got to the part of the video with airtag. Good to know.
Do a Video with Hoplopfheil!
dog goes "yo dad you okay?" lol
I live in the South but my family lives in Illinois. Most of the state is pro gun but we all know Chicago isn’t. That being said I have never personally flown with a gun, but I have a friend that does frequently and apparently if you fly through O’Hare, regardless of how proper your documentation is or how well the firearm in question follows the strict Chicago gun laws, they held his guns for seven days and he had to pick them up from a separate police station later. He now flys through Milwaukee but he ran through that issue multiple times at O’Hare between 2015 and 2019
I just flew through ohare no issues with an A/R and a pistol
I've heard stories of people who flew with guns and the plane got diverted to NYC and in NYC the specific firearm was not in a NY legal configuration and they got arrested. No idea if it's actually true but I have heard similar stories multiple times.
That’s so insane. Even CA hasn’t been that bad
I flew with 7 guns before I think the only limits are on AMMO which has to be under 11 pounds
I was tense just listening.
I have a clean record too.
How to fly with guns on planes:
Rent a plane and hire me (or your local commercial pilot at your local airport)
Dang guys you fly so much how come you don’t just get a contract with someone and fly in a small plane? Probably more cost effective🤷♂️
Genuinely curious - that really starts to be cost effective over big commercial airlines? (Assuming consistent A and B?)
I’m pretty sure we need to be in a vastly different tax bracket
Well it costs $200 round trip to fly me to Utah to film. Small municipal airport Allegiant is the airline. If it is cheaper then that I may look into it.
Cases are no joke. Airline broke my case handle somehow
Leave it to the airlines
Happened to me to Ethiopian air broke off my pelican handle
The one time I flew with a gun I was stuck in dever international Airport for 2 hours waiting for management so I could pick up my hunting rifle, since then I prefer to drive
Bummer. Never had that experience in over 50+ flights would love to drive issue is going back and forth from Florida, Georgia, Texas, Arizona, Utah, there isn’t enough time or money to keep that sustainable 🤷🏻♂️
@@Chrisblau yeah it certainly swong me the wrong way. So did the price of boxing up half an elk and flying it
@@patagucci8482 yes elk plane tickets are super expensive 😂😂😂 yeah I understand that man with how much o travel it’s just not feasible for me to drive everywhere.
Ima just drive
Review the hellion?
What about flying overseas!!! I’m trying to bring my ar-15 and my 19x to Ukraine (obviously I’m landing in Poland) I have one stop on Germany
Miami>Germany>Poland
Anyway you guys could give me some info on this or anywhere I can go to get the info
Honestly I have no idea. Don’t get arrested
Maybe a weird or dumb question but are you allowed to pack clothes in the same case that you have your guns in?
It’s not a prob it’s just padding

Flying with guns is bullshit. You know why? Because Chris said ammunition must be in the manufacturer's packaging, but another person who flies with guns a lot (on the Vortex podcast, his name escaped me) has said he loads all of his magazines before flying because magazine do in fact qualify as ammunition storage since magazines are very much designed to store ammo.
And here's the thing, Chris and the guy who's name I forgot are both right because the TSA, like every government agency, has a set of rules that only half of them know and only half of those ever care to enforce properly.
Yeah I know right? So inconsistent but I have been dinged flying with it in loaded mags once, never been dinged in manufactures box so 🤷🏻♂️
One piece of advice I gathered from another channel is to physically print out the policies of your airline to have on hand
But yeah having it saved on a photo on your phone is great too
At this point I would rather drive lol
I understand
Tiawana sounds like the place Kyle bush was going to😂
Clutch work shutting down that yawn, Jake.
I’m trying haha
Over 10k in value, I've never trusted the airlines that much. I hardly fly with much in my luggage anyway.
10k? My pelican that was like 80 pounds had easily 40-50k in guns 🤷🏻♂️ I mean one cosmi shotgun is like $80,000 and people fly with those 🤷🏻♂️
Ohhh not with wings attached like some tactical valkyrie
To sum up this up: TSA doesn't know what they're doing, so you have to. 😂
Exactly
Even when you do it by the book, plenty of people end up in legal headaches and guns taken.
Wood...
I always just take my gun on the plane. Way easier!
Alaska airlines let’s you fly with 50lbs of ammunition
Drive.
Yeah mathematically with how much I fly there isn’t enough time. My last trip was phoenix to Dallas, Dallas to Georgia, Georgia to Dallas Dallas to salt lake salt lake to Phoenix. Not enough time that’s why this is a video about FLYING with firearms.
cool, now i know to sift through the remains of airline crashes when the apocalypse starts.
Haha
